    Domain Millionaire - Satish Gaire

    Part I

    Foundations

The foundation chapters will familiarize you with the terminology & base needed to become an effective and successful domainer.

    Chapter 1

    Domain Name

    Objectives:

    ♦What is a domain name?

    ♦Why are they valuable?

Adomain name is simply word(s) that users can type into their browser to access your website. Google.com and Apple.com are examples of domain name.

For the most part, every website that you visit online is a DOMAIN Name.

    Technical Version:

Each domain name (e.g.,Google.com) calls an IP address where the files for the domain are hosted its home. For example, if you typed 216.58.194.46, you would end up on Google.com

Simply put, a domain name is an easy to remember (sometimes) word(s) that an individual or organization can register for hosting files & those files can be viewed using a browser.

Domain names are valuable for several reasons, such as character, age & brandability, but the main factor is that there can ONLY be one of them, i.e., Wine.com or Apple.com, and there cannot be another one using exactly the same word or words.

The era in which we live is what I call the Wild West of the Internet & it’s only going to get wilder in the years to come. So, this is the right time to start investing some time & money into a domain. The best advice I can give you is, if you don’t plan on actively selling domains, just buy & sit on them for 10-20 years & see how valuable they become.

    Chapter 2

    Register A Domain Name

    Let the rodeo begin!

We all have to start somewhere.

When I was 16 or 17…. I really wanted to register a domain name. So I asked my father if I could get some money. I needed to register a domain name on Godaddy.com

He asked, How much do you need?!

I said, $10 bucks will do.

Then he whips out his wallet and hands me a twenty, saying extra $10 for lunch tomorrow.

Uhhhh … I actually needed his debit card to register the domain online, but of course, being from a Asian family, this was not happening.

You gotta understand that, at that time, people were not so open to using debit/credit cards online due to rumours about online fraud. So, after begging for days, he handed me $100 and told me to stop bitching about it.

Then I started looking online & found this guy on a forum who was offering a job of creating a graphic design for $20.

I wasn’t a graphic designer, but I thought that maybe I could have him buy the domain for me as payment for the design. When I messaged him, he agreed to the exchange.

He said, YES! I was so happy that day. I worked almost 20 hours back and forth (because I sucked a graphic designing) to earn that domain. It was my first… LiveThunder.com.

That’s how my journey as a Domainer began.

Today, I own over 7,000+ domains, but I don’t own my first domain; lacking the funds to renew it, I lost it. To this day, I’m still trying to buy it back. Later, I’ll explain how to make sure you never lose your domains.

    That was my humble beginning.

Enough of storytelling. Let’s move on to how to register a domain name:

Registering a domain name requires that you have a valid credit card, an email address & some imagination (or just read this book … I skip all the BS theories & guesswork).

There are several companies, called Registrars, with which that you can register your domain. The companies I recommend are GoDaddy.com, Enom.com, and NameCheap.com

When you google Register Domain, you’ll be bombarded with offers from various registrars who want to offer you a sweet deal. Be wary. Sure, there are many other companies that
