    About the Author

    Channelling Childhood

    Weekly Spelling Bee

    in wavy lines

    like Noah’s animals

    we turn

    face each other

    wait

    Miss yells out a word

    first person spells

    gets it right she stays

    gets it wrong she sits

    slowly the queues diminish

    until only that Sarah Mills

    stands opposite me

her lips curved in a sneer

Miss asks her to spell believe

    she forgets

    ‘i before e except after c’

    I stand triumphant

    Miss glares

    her pet faltered

    I wait for

    praise

    wait

    English Class

Sarah Mills smug top of the class this time sure of her self-worth

Mum asks but is she nice

I think what’s nice clammy hands leave marks smudge my paper

    heat of effort

imprint remains for others to follow

    or not

    My knees shake Miss Brown
