Chapter One
The sky was blue with white puffy clouds. The water softly rolled in over the sands of the beach of the island. Suddenly the sound of multiple people screaming could be heard. A beat up van flying through a white fluffy cloud in the air started to descend onto the beach its muffler making a pop noise as the van swayed back and forth. As the wheels touched down a clunking noise from the muffler rattling underneath and then it backfired. Someone inside said, I'm going to be sick!
Other people were screaming inside.
The doors flung open and first out was a red headed boy, named Sam, dressed in tan pants and a white pull over shirt. He knelt on the ground as if ill. Next out of the van was a girl with dark hair and skin, it was Gretchen. She was similarly dressed with a white pullover shirt but wore a tan skirt instead of pants. She screamed, Land, thank God!
As she threw her entire body onto the sand and began hugging the ground. ‘Thomas where did you learn how to drive?" She shouted back in the van.
Technically it’s flying!
A man inside the van yelled. I’ll have you know this van has the same autopilot as Santa’s sleigh. At least the 2010 model. If the big guy doesn’t complain maybe you should toughen up.
Thomas replied in his rough Scottish accent.
We just fought Lucifer and won the battle so I think I’m plenty tough.
Gretchen snipped back. Jessica should have flown us with her powers.
Gretchen replied.
Well that would have only worked until we reached the Bermuda triangle and then we would have crashed.
Thomas responded. Magic does not work in the triangle. Everyone knows that!
Obviously not everyone.
Gretchen shot back with sarcasm.
Barking noises could be heard from the van. Jessica and Nick popped their head out of the van side door each holding a scared little Chihuahua pup. They smiled as they looked at their two friends on the beach.
Looks like we got our wish,
Jessica said to Nick, remembering their earlier wish before leaving their winter cold school for a warmer climate. They stepped out onto the sand and could feel the heat on their skin. I’m gonna need some sunblock pronto or my skin will match my hair.
Jessica yelled into the van. Jessica Winters snow white skin and bright red hair were made for a colder climate not tropical sun.
An older woman with orange hair piled on top of her head came stumbling out of the van looking through her purse frantically. It was Amy, one of Jessica’s mentors, I’m sure I packed some.
She found a bottle in her purse and handed it to Jessica.
Jessica grabbed a hair tie off her wrist and pulled up her long curly hair from her face. Thank you Amy.
She poured some lotion into her hand and started to apply it to her face and neck. She went to hand the bottle to Nick who shrugged it off. Don’t be such a tough guy.
Jessica said. Do you want skin cancer to kill you before Lucifer?
Nick grabbed the bottle out of Jessica’s hand making some rumbling noise, "I know it’s your job to protect me but is skin care included?" Nick was annoyed with his companion.
A woman with straight black hair tied back in a long ponytail down her back appeared from the van and said, Obviously it is. Or would you prefer to look like a tomato?
The thin tall woman, dressed in a grey pencil skirt and white button down blouse peered over the rim of her glasses looking at Nick with a disapproving scowl.
Thank you Jan.
Jessica smiled at her mentor for having her back. Jessica remembered when she thought Jan hated her and now she was like a mother to her.
Nick had dark wavy hair and blue eyes. He was well over six feet tall and had broad shoulders. In his mind a man who fights Lucifer should not need something as pathetic as sunblock. Also Jessica protecting him was a new concept. He was always her protector. Now with her magic powers she was her own force. Still Nick believed he could defend himself. Magic or no magic Nick was no weakling and could handle himself. He could feel Jessica’s piercing green eyes looking at him and remembered she could read his thoughts. Stop doing that!
He barked at her, I’m putting the stupid lotion on.
Nick squeezed the tube hard and it made a farting noise as a lump of white lotion dumped into his hand. He dropped the bottle and smacked the lump of lotion on his skin rubbing it into his arm. Happy?
He asked Jessica. She smiled back as a means of approval.
The driver’s side door flung open. Listen to them lad, you don’t want a red body with a red suit.
Tom started barking at Nick before his feet even hit the sand. Unlike Jessica’s mentor who was cool and calm. Nick’s was a loud burley man from Scotland who always seemed to be yelling. The wind will fool here. Trick your mind that it’s not that hot but your skin will be fried like bacon in minutes.
Lovely thought.
Jan replied to her male counterpart.
Sam managed to get himself off the ground and joined them in lotion application. Is he going to come out?
Sam signaled to Adam who was still in the van.
Jessica looked inside and said, Come on Strawberry head, if anyone needs this lotion more than me it’s your snow white skin.
Adam smiled at Jessica using his own bully tactic against him now. Referring to his altered hair color from white to red and picking on him like he used to her. The former nemesis made his way out onto the sand and took a bottle of sunblock from Amy.
Sam laughed at Jessica’s reference to Adam’s hair. Well when she starts to pick on you it’s a pretty good sign she’s getting over the bullying. You do look like someone dipped your head in red paint though.
Adam’s hair change color occurred from a mishap of Jessica’s magic to save his life. His hair normally a silver
