This book is dedicated first to my mother (1921–1987), a very caring and sensitive person who was also an avid reader. She enjoyed one of my early fictional short stories called The Tree People
and was always very supportive of my writing abilities.
To my wife of thirty-three years, who has faithfully stood behind me in so many things, and especially so in all of my writing endeavors. If there ever was an encourager, you are it!
To my daughter, Holly, whose love for me goes farther than the stars. She said so!
To my loyal son, Aaron, who shares the same heartfelt concern for this nation that I do.
To my best friend, Jim Koetitz (1942–1962), who, as a Marine, would have embraced the classic ideas of individualism and freedom that I have presented in this book.
And last, to all of those courageous people who stand for liberty and justice for all. Let freedom ring!

INTRODUCTION
We are now where the rubber meets the road. The American people and their leaders are finally going to have to make the right choices. There is no more room for shades of gray in a world that is more black and white. There is a way that seems right to man, but its end is destruction. If there are two roads diverged in wood, I shall take the one less traveled by. It may be more narrow, and it could have the appearance of being more difficult to walk down, but this I know. Once, I did take a narrow road. From there, I took a glorious trail. I walked up along the silver streams and upon the wondrous rocks beneath my feet. I looked up, and I saw the towering pines and the cedars above me. My eyes beheld something that I could not contain.
America the beautiful, today I challenge you to leave that wide road. Kick the dust off your feet. Find the essence of life, the rock of your soul. Desire those greater things, where the water runs passionately deep and true. Hope in those things that have substance. Believe in the unseen, for often one knows not what is beyond the bend. And finally, have genuine love for all, including those who are unlovely. Then this nation and its people shall once again rise above the calling that has been set before them. They shall run and not be weary. They shall soar as with the wings of an eagle.
AMERICA IN THE BALANCE
Politics is like football; if you see daylight, go through the hole.
—John F. Kennedy
It’s the Super Bowl. The opposing team is ahead by five points. There are seven seconds left on the clock. The home team needs a touchdown, but only a miracle could save the day. The quarterback drops back to pass. His choice wide end is fully covered. None of his other receivers are open! Hope is fading. The halfback ends up blocking, but then seeing his quarterback in trouble, he darts over the middle with his hands held high. Desperate, the quarterback passes the football to his halfback. He catches it and evades three defenders as he runs forty yards down the sideline into the end zone for a touchdown! Unbelievable! The crowd cheers, and the home team is ecstatic. A miracle has just taken place, and the people begin to cry tears of joy. The team has fulfilled its dream, and they become the heroes of the hour.
Football has its miracles and heroes, but in our nation, who are the new heroes of today? My friends, whether you know it or not, there is another miracle that needs to take place. It’s been long overdue, but there is still a chance. America and its spirit need a mega miracle! We’re in the Super Bowl, but there is very little time. It’s a night game, and we are in the end zone, but now we have to catch the ball. The stadium lights are on, but they are dimming, and the precious soul of America is fading. The character of the people is waxing cold.
One lawsuit after another tries to settle many differences. The economy is faltering. Our cities are filled with poverty and crime. Prisons are bursting at the seams. Racism is still quite evident. Corruption in high places is everywhere. Young children are desensitized by violent video games and movies. Drugs are rampant. Ambition is fueled by the love of money, and families are falling apart as happiness and worldly fulfillment become the elusive butterfly. So while the masses’ eyes are fixed on movies and football, the entire country lies in the balance.
We’re not talking about 9/11. There’s something much greater going on here, folks. America is falling apart from the inside out. This is not an opinion. It is a fact and a spiritual revelation for those who can receive it.
To add to this, still another factor enters the equation, and it is called political freedom. For the most part, it is one of the most prized parts of a quality of life. Without embarking upon a long discourse to define the term, I will just say that it is the opinion of many that true freedom comes from within. Yet there is still another type of freedom we are concerned with. I am talking about freedom from political bondage and oppression and thus is the beginning of what I believe will become a new revelation for those who seek to be truly free.
Political freedom, no doubt, is a very important part of many societies. Yet some persons may even believe that it is not important enough to worry about because they are content allowing the state and/or their religious institutions to make important decisions for them. But for those who love true political freedom there are at least two examples. One supports the belief of individual liberty, where important choices are made by the person, which, in the end, leads to a very pure and personal kind of freedom with a minimal amount of governmental influence and a better, more simple life. This was the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson. One may even compare the desire for a better life to a phrase coined in America’s Declaration of Independence: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,
and that in the end, this entire concept was worth fighting for. The phrase was written in a powerful way, and there was tremendous passion and courage behind it. This is classic individualism, and it is precisely what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they wrote it.
The other person also believes in a type of freedom but chooses a significantly different path to achieve his goal. For the sake of distinguishing between the two, I will call it collective liberty. This is the belief that sidesteps individualism and claims that we will be far better off as a society by serving the needs of the country or state—not to mention the corporations and special interests that may, in the end, also benefit from such a philosophy. And every state or nation that supports this view will invariably install their philosopher kings,
or their well-educated, intellectual elite to rule the people fairly within the framework of a tightly woven bureaucracy that controls the masses through the appearance of liberty and freedom, but it is a deception.
None can love freedom heartily, but good men; the rest love not freedom, but license.
—John Milton, The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates
Another term is quite frequently used in conjunction with collective liberty, and it is called communism, but I just threw that in to give you a twist and a parallel to cause you to think. You see, the communists really never talk about or promote liberty, freedom, or democracy as a cornerstone of society. But America does. Now, as I share with you, perhaps your eyes will be opened, and you will begin to have the true revelation about where America is with regard to the kinds of freedoms she offers her citizens today.
Truly, we have evolved from an individualistic society to a collective-corporate society, where the needs of the state and corporations supersede the needs of the person. Producing more oil, conventional automobiles, and traditional medicine, saving trees, environmental concerns, and warming trends dominate one small part of the collective-political landscape mentality. It is disheartening to see how some of these agendas are prioritized either in schools or on the news as more important than a nation that is truly on the verge of collapse—economically, spiritually, and morally; where bizarre shootings and lawlessness abound; where white-collar corruption is evident, not only among the citizens but fully present in the government and corporations as well! To deal with this downward trend, the direction of the political character of America, which is in shambles, surely needs a makeover.
But first, let’s look at the very reasons why the American political system is no longer functional.
This nation truly lies in the balance as a society that needs to return to a loving, peaceful existence with a true moral foundation, or its end is evident, and its fall will be great. It will not survive in a politically correct world where biased U.S. judges overstep their jurisdiction by overturning a people’s majority vote, or where these same judges also protect government officials who are guilty of corruption or even treason. American leaders can no longer wink while children of other nations are used in war, while these same trading partners in the Middle East purchase weapons with oil or drug money that is later used by terrorists who are against us and other nations as well. Either our trading partners need to be for us or
