Judy Day

Judy Day has been a teacher for many years, concentrating on reading. She has seen many children's books and loves reading them silently and to children and adults. As a child she also loved to read and had many favorite books, including Anne of Green Gables, Secret Garden, Pollyanna, and Nancy Drew, to name only a few of the many, many that she read. One day when thinking about favorite books she had read as a child and, then, reread as an adult, it occurred to her that all of her favorites had a "moral" to the story. They also had characters who tried very hard to do what was good or, at least, learned how important it was to do the best possible to be good. Judy believes that children's books can help children to learn patience and kindness and to let go of anger. She believes that these lessons can last forever. Judy also believes that it is important to "believe" and that life is full of magic if we are open to it. Sometimes we may not even actually see the magic but it is still there to help us in our lives. Judy hopes that you believe, even in the darkest of times, and that your life is filled with sparkling magic. She also hopes you find this book to be sparkling!

    Castle Characters

The Wizard Myrddin built the castle (according to folklore) and lived in it many, many years before the story began. He was a good wizard and was full of magic, as many wizards may be. Most people in the town near the castle believed that the wizard was still alive and lived near the castle so that he could watch over it and the woods around it. No one really knew what the wizard looked like but there have been lots of guesses.

Oscar Olden is the owner of the castle. He is a medical doctor. He inherited the castle from his family and loves it and the woods and waters near the castle very much. He is a quiet and gentle man in the middle years of his life.

Jay is an eight-year-old boy who lives in an orphanage that is quite close to the outer edge of the castle woods. He loves nature and often walks near the castle.

Sister Marion and Sister Armadeus are in charge of the orphanage where Jay lives. Rose is a neighbor to the castle and she lives in a stone cottage at the edge of the castle property. She is very new to the area.

Mr. Eves lives next to the castle with his wife and daughter. He has wonderful Clydesdale horses and a beautiful farm filled with his sculptures and other works of art. Because he and Oscar love nature they have become great friends.

Dickon and Spirit are Rose’s two dogs. Dickon is an Australian Shepherd with brown spots and white fur and ice blue eyes. His best friend is Spirit, the Samoyed. Spirit is white and fluffy and filled with spirit and energy. He can howl and sing whenever he is excited and happy.

The White Wolves lived in the forest and hills beyond the castle lands. It is often said that they are connected to the wizard and that he cast a spell on them that made peaceful and kind wolves who were put in charge of protecting the castle and castle lands. They can sometimes be seen and their howls can often be heard in the night. Unlike the howls of some wolves, the howls of these wolves are comforting and sound lovely.

Snowy lives in the castle with Oscar. Oscar often thought of Snowy as another person in the castle. Snowy is a Samoyed dog. Samoyed’s are one of the most ancient dog breeds. Maybe that is why Snowy always seemed so patient and wise. She is a large ball of white fur with a tail that curls up over her back. She always looks as though she is smiling. Oscar took her home with him on a very snowy and stormy day right before Christmas and that was how she got her name.

Merlin arrived at the castle just as the story begins. He is a Samoyed, too. He is just a puppy! Merlin looks almost like Snowy. He is covered with fluffy white fur. He has brown eyes and a smile on his face all of the time---just as Snowy does. He, too, seems to be filled with joy.

    M. Silver is the oldest cat -- and he is very old. Nobody seems to know his exact age. Mr. Silver was given his name because he is silver-gray with large pure green eyes. Mr. Silver loves to eat. He is a portly cat, as quick on his feet as a tap dancer, though that is not what one would expect when looking at him. He is a kind of Winston Churchill of cats, looking like an important statesman at all times. His manner is one of a self-confidence and a sort of intellectual interest in the world around him. If cats could have a brass-topped cane, Mr. Silver would certainly own one.

Mr. Midnight Sky is the next oldest cat, but much younger that Mr. Silver. Sky was born in an old tire right after Christmas. His mother was a homeless cat who wandered into a barn and found an unused tire where she could have her kittens. The kittens were found by the man who owned the barn and taken to veterinarian, Dr. Wentworth. Sky was the smallest of all so he had to be fed with a bottle for a couple of weeks. When Oscar adopted him he could fit into the palm of Oscar’s hand. He was healthy, though, and got stronger very quickly. He ate and ate, probably to make up for all the food he didn’t have when he was born. He is shy, but is kind and always takes care of the other cats.

Ms. Amelia Bright is the youngest of the cats. Ms. Amelia’s eyes are a light green grey and very large. She is beautiful cat, both inside and out. She is gray with black and brown stripes and patches of orange. She has a white bib and doublewide white front paws. When she stands, she often puts her paws at an angle that makes her seem to be posing like a ballet dancer who has just stopped for a moment during a performance. When Ms. Amelia hops on shelves and stretched out in defiance or contentment she looks like the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland. Ms. Amelia is always curious and gets into everything.

Beloved Feather is the leader of all the owls in the castle woods. (Owls have what is called a parliament and they also have a leader of that group). He is a very beautiful and powerful owl and so he is a very important part of the castle woods.

    Prelude

Once upon a time, deep in pine-scented woods, stood a castle. The name of the castle was Castle Myrddin. Legend had it that the castle was built by a wizard who had lived there for many years. Some in the neighboring town claimed to have caught sight of him but no one could ever describe him. People said his name was Myrddin. But how did they know? It was said that Myrddin cast a spell on the castle. The spell allowed him to leave some of his special magic to protect the castle and woods forever . To
