About the Author
Introduction
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor, specifically a pediatrician. I have always loved caring for children and knew from an early age that would be my life’s work. For an almost equal period of time, I also wanted to be a mom. I loved playing house with my baby dolls, and mothering
all of my cousins and the younger kids in my neighborhood. I have always had a deep and abiding passion to work with kids and teach, coach, and parent them towards their best outcomes. I was focused so singularly on my professional goal of becoming an excellent pediatrician that one day I looked up and was over thirty-five (advanced maternal age or AMA
in medical terms) and desperately desiring the children I hadn’t yet had. Eventually, via adoption, I was blessed with the gift of a wonderful daughter. Becoming a mom for the first time over the age of forty truly focused me on my purpose of parenting and teaching others to parent confidently, effectively, and with joy.
This book is for all of you first-time moms over thirty-five, fellow old-school mamas,
and other
