    Introduction

    For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor, specifically a pediatrician. I have always loved caring for children and knew from an early age that would be my life’s work. For an almost equal period of time, I also wanted to be a mom. I loved playing house with my baby dolls, and mothering all of my cousins and the younger kids in my neighborhood. I have always had a deep and abiding passion to work with kids and teach, coach, and parent them towards their best outcomes. I was focused so singularly on my professional goal of becoming an excellent pediatrician that one day I looked up and was over thirty-five (advanced maternal age or AMA in medical terms) and desperately desiring the children I hadn’t yet had. Eventually, via adoption, I was blessed with the gift of a wonderful daughter. Becoming a mom for the first time over the age of forty truly focused me on my purpose of parenting and teaching others to parent confidently, effectively, and with joy.
