Behind The Music Tales is a series which captures the mood and feel of the energy that surged through music in the 90s and 2000s. It presents exclusive original interviews as an honest record, directly from authentic creative forces, and is a clear historical document as close to the truth as one can get.
The tale of Sean Combs substantial ascent is one we all know well. Born in Harlem, at the age of two his father, an associate of American Gangster Frank Lucas is shot and killed in his car. He was raised in Money earnin’ Mount Vernon and graduated from Catholic school. He studied as a business major for one year at Howard University before resolving to pursue a career in the music industry decisively.
Diddy had witnessed friends, and fellow Mount Vernon residents Heavy D and Eddie F develop the Untouchables Entertainment Group, and Heavy D got him in the door of Uptown Records, where he began to climb the ladder of success on ground level as a mail room intern. Through hard work and dedication, he made himself known and was instrumental in forging the groundbreaking bad boy image of Jodeci. Behind the scenes of New York City’s renowned nightlife scene as a party promoter, Diddy crafted unique special events formulated by positive energy, karma and vibes, and the people followed. Sadly, heartbreak ensued when he partnered with Heavy D to raise monies, and awareness for AIDS charities and nine people died in a stampede rushing to enter a celebrity basketball game.

Two steps forward and one step back, facing civil suits and losing sleep. Diddy put his head down and committed to making Mary J. Blige and the rest of the Uptown Records roster stars. As Mary J. Blige assumed her role and became the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Diddy became more aggressive in his pursuit of creative control over the roster clashing with label head honcho Andre Harrell too many times and got fired.
