Chapter One: Annoying Brother of the Year Award
My name is Elizabeth Sierra Way, but everyone calls me Lizzie.
I am 11 years old and I'm in the fifth grade. I live in East Folio. I love my life except for one thing‐‐the golden child. You know, the kid in the family that everyone loves. Besides me.
Well, in my family we have a golden child named Peter, he is an obnoxious eight‐year‐old boy in second grade. All I have ever wanted was a little bit of attention, but whenever I get any, Peter uses his hawk eyes, swoops in, and snatches it away like a bear snatches a fish from the river to eat for dinner. Just last night at dinner, Peter stole the attention from me.
I was telling my parents about my day when my brother rudely interrupted me and exclaimed, Mommy, I am going to be sick!
And just like that, my mom turned away from me and went over to my brother, leaving me feeling like a helpless bird. What’s wrong, Peter?
Mom asked.
Lizzie was talking with her mouth full of food. She needs to have manners. After all, you are in the fifth grade, Lizzie.
Peter proclaimed like he was my mother. Even my dad turned on me. Lizzie, Peter is right. You are becoming a big girl and you should know your manners by now.
Sometimes I wonder what life would be like without a brother. But wait‐‐I do know. I haven’t had a brother all my life because we adopted him. We adopted Peter last year and my parents want me to be nice to him because he is adjusting
to the family. But he is ruining my life and getting away with it because of that lame excuse. I have no idea why my parents adopted Peter. We were doing just fine without him, and then one day my parents informed me that we were going to adopt a kid. Before I could tell them, I am fine on my own, they went ahead, got Peter and my life was ruined.
We do not know who Peter's birth parents are. For all we know, he lived in the orphanage for a long time waiting for adoption. His parents could be burglars; and maybe he has burglar blood and he wants to rob us broke! Probably not.
For some reason, Peter hates me and sometimes I wonder why. My parents think I am jealous of him and tell me that they are going to take me to therapy if I don’t stop my bad
attitude. Whenever I ask my parents for something they say no, but when Peter asks for the same thing they say yes, and find some excuse why they want to do it for him, and to me it does not seem very fair. Sometimes I wonder if they are my real parents.
After dinner, I got an idea. Since Peter is such an annoying brother, I thought that he should get an award for it. Being annoying must be a lot of work. NOT!
When I finished eating, I walked over to my brother who was watching Power Rangers on TV. Hey, Peter,
I said, for being such a good little brother at dinner, you know, complaining for no good reason—I mean teaching me a valuable lesson—you should get an award!
I handed him a ribbon. Finally, you are seeing things my way,
Peter said without even looking at the ribbon because he was too engrossed in his movie. Yes, you did deserve that annoying brother of the year award.
I answered in a snobby way.
What!!!
Peter growled as he read what I wrote on the ribbon.
Aww, poor Peter, didn’t you read the fine print, or did you forget how to read?
That was a mega burn. Peter’s face turned red and he looked like he was ready to burst. Mommy, Daddy, Lizzie said I am dumb!
Peter fibbed. Lizzie, how many times did I tell you not to use that word? You are grounded for the rest of the night‐‐Go to your room!
my dad yelled.
As I began walking to my room, Peter whispered, In your face!
I hate it when he says that to me. When I got to my room, I sat down, closed my eyes and imagined myself as a giant stepping right on Peter’s puny little face.
Chapter Two: Spotlight Stealer
There is only one day in the school year that I feel as if I shine, and that is the school‐wide awards ceremony. It is held the last week of school, and the teachers hand out awards to kids who did notable things all throughout the year. The good news is that most of the awards are awarded to fifth graders, and since I am a fifth grader, I am expecting to receive a book‐load of awards.
The award I am looking forward to the most is the mileage club award. I love running and I am fast. I even made it to my sixth card. I am sure that no one will beat me, and if some kid does beat me I will be fine if it is not a specific someone.
For those of you who don’t know what mileage club is, it is basically running for a prize. At my school, you get a card with 20 hearts on it; every time you finished running one lap you get a stamp in one of the hearts. After you finish running all twenty laps you will get a new card, a prize and the teachers will mark that you finished a card, and at the end of the year the top 3 runners will be awarded for running the most and I think I will be one of them! [Hopefully I will be
