I met Sandy Dow in 2008 when she showed up on the Big Island of Hawaii for a weeklong workshop I was teaching on Hawaiian shamanism.
I didn’t realize it then, but Sandy had already begun a healing journey that had led her to my workshop—a journey that brought her into contact with many other teachers and healing modalities rooted in the latest findings in the biology of trauma.
The practices from these teachings—which Sandy details in her book—resolve the negative impact the nervous system can have on the body and mind, creating a firm foundation in the body that supports the more energetic and spiritual practices she also includes.
Over her years of study, Sandy has taken the best of what she learned and shares it with us in this concise, little book. It’s as if she has read thousands of cookbooks and handpicked the most delicious yet easy-to-make recipes for us to enjoy.
Her genius is to give us a series of brief but powerful exercises and techniques that relieve anxiety, instantly calm the body and mind, and spark the energy that the body needs in order to succeed in whatever way is meaningful to the reader. She has also structured her 2-minute practices in such a way that when we follow them in sequence, they allow us to pause in the midst of whatever it is that is distressing us and begin our own journeys towards healing and thriving.
My own training in NLP, Hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing® (trauma therapy), family constellations, and Hawaiian shamanism (I was initiated as an alakai or teacher in a lineage of kahuna) echoes a lot of what Sandy offers here. So I was delighted to see many of the techniques I had also learned contained in her book. But I was thrilled when I practiced the ones that were new to me and found how effective they were in creating instant changes.
Although Sandy intended this book as a resource for personal growth, I now use it with my clients by picking and choosing exercises for them to practice during the week when they feel they need some help and I’m not around.
If you have ever watched lava flow into the ocean, you will have seen the wild, steamy act of creation in progress as it forms the newest land on the planet. And that is the point of Sandy’s book: We can form new lands for ourselves, new paths and journeys, while in the midst of anxiety and upset. Or, as Sandy
