Foreword
This is a thoughtful and diverse collection, rich with imagery. Family relationships are viewed from various angles and always with compassion.
‘Snapshots’ is a telling reminder of the restrictions once imposed by society on women. ‘In the year of my birth’ evokes a time of war and will strike a chord with many readers. The poet’s background in science informs poems such as ‘Beginnings’ and ‘Elemental’. ‘Cast’ describes a Holocaust Memorial by the Danube, where ‘Metal shoes wait/in a higgledy row…’ The horror unfolds in four tight stanzas, and is unforgettable. Historical figures are given a voice: ‘Josephine Bonaparte’, ‘Marie Curie’ and ‘Einstein’s Wife’ add to our understanding of their lives. ‘Burke Longs for Julia’ is a poignant but unsentimental look at the vulnerable side of the explorer. ‘Wrist Bones’ left me with the image of those bones kept in a jar, and the poet’s loving observation that although her father could no longer paint oils, it didn’t ‘stop him/conjuring trinkets from our ears/with a flick of his wrist.’
Intensely observant and memorable, these poems should find a wide readership.
