    For Boone

    SOMETHING MYSTICAL

Boone was nearly seven when he found the mysterious silver coin. It had been tucked beneath one of Grandma BallyHuHu’s old quilts and hidden inside a chest. Sometimes, Boone thought it looked like a treasure chest but no one called it that.

I think it must have been buried by pirates, Boone said one day.

Grandma BallyHuHu just laughed and said, You’ve got a good imagination, my dear.

Boone brushed some sand that had been trapped beneath a hinge from a corner of the ancient chest. He glanced up and saw Grandma BallyHuHu’s eyes twinkle as she smiled. But she didn’t say anything else.

It is a treasure chest! Boone said.

Perhaps, Grandma BallyHuHu replied and offered him some cookies she’d just taken out of the oven. "Now these are treasures!" she said and winked.

Boone took a bite from one of the cookies. It was hot and gooey and chocolaty – just they way he liked them. She poured them both a glass of milk and sat down at the table with him.

You know, Boone, she said. It’s been said that Salty Dogs called their silver coins, ‘chips’. Grandma BallyHuHu bit into a melted chocolate chunk that was sticking out of her cookie. I call this a chip too! She laughed as chocolate dripped down her chin. She wiped her mouth with a napkin and the lines around her eyes wrinkled up with her smile. Then she winked at Boone and her eyes twinkled again. She always had that twinkly look in her eyes whenever she had a fun idea.

Today, they had twinkled twice and Boone knew that meant it would be an exciting day. He giggled at his silly grandma and popped the last of his cookie into his mouth.

What’s a Salty Dog? Boone asked. He took another cookie and spun it around in his hand, searching for a melted chocolate chip to bite into.

A pirate! Grandma BallyHuHu said and her eyes sparkled. I’ve heard that some of the coins found in sunken ships are from pirate ships. But not all are mystical.

She tapped a finger on the silver coin that sat next to Boone on the table. He stared at it for a moment then gobbled up the last of his cookie. Almost afraid to touch it, Boone leaned in closer with his nose just inches away from the coin
