Arrival in the City
Humans are strange. Have you ever noticed that?
Oh. I suppose I should introduce myself first. I am Thomas Bartholomew Thompson. I know, it is rather a grand name. My mother was the special companion of a society woman and I’m afraid it went to her head.
You may call me Tom.
Yes, I know a tom-cat named Tom isn’t particularly original. Did you get to choose your name? No, I didn’t think so. If I went by Bartholomew the other animals would laugh me out of the neighborhood.
Now that introductions have been made I’ll get back to my story, shall I?
Humans are strange. The neighborhood is a perfect example of this. Our quiet little street, near the Capital Square in Richmond, has a lovely collection of animals, most of which I have at least some acquaintance with. Our human neighbors often think we don’t get along, they assume that I chase the birds and the dogs chase me, and everything is strife and savagery.
Mrs. Yarrington’s boarding house gives us a quite a collection of people, though they come and go so quickly they barely notice us. Mrs. Yarrington does have a small garden, and she is ever so kind to leave her rejected produce out for the birds and squirrels.
Mr. Browne at the corner has a prize-winning garden, and a shed that
