Greg Schaffer

Greg Schaffer participated in a small Christian-based group ministry in 2011 and became a facilitator with the ministry to help others find their direction toward a purposeful life. His firsthand experiences of lives transformed through such healing groups led him to write Leaving Darkness, hoping the tale of transformation through God’s grace may encourage those lost in their own darkness to reach out for help. The author of two previous novels, Greg lives in Franklin, Tennessee, with his wife and three rescue dogs.

    Summer's Drowning - Greg Schaffer

    BEFORE

    Fish on a Bike

She was all I had seen

Once a long time ago in a dream

    That I turned away

    Tomorrow on a lonely night

I gave in to the fight

    Of what might have been

Oh, a fish on a bike

    The one I never loved

Never even knew if I liked

She left, the fish on a bike

Sitting on a hard bar stool

People telling me I was a fool

    What do they know?

Cheap crap played out every day

On soaps or on Springer in some ugly way

    Love really blows

    Roly poly, holy moly!

What’s the one thing to console me

    Besides an empty beer

    Loneliness is here again

Because I’ve gave in to the sin

    To the fear

Oh, a fish on a bike

    The one I never loved

Never even knew if I liked

She left, the fish on a bike

    Buffalo Blues

    She was so fine

    I nearly lost my mind

But she cut her losses dry

    And behind herself she cried

    She was wondering the town

    Because Bethlehem was down

    And she cried

    She’s got the Buffalo Blues

She’s got nothing left to lose

    Her friends are getting married

    Her life is so harried

But she makes each day a dream

    By saying what she means

Yet she still takes her licks

    And never gets her kicks

    Still she cries

    She’s got the Buffalo Blues

She’s got nothing more to choose

    Friends First

We met in a time, we touched our lives

Too many problems that we both had to hide

We needed someone, someone to take our hand

For the moment, someone who would understand

Time continued on, and we became close quite fast

Sometimes wondering if our friendship will last

Complicated by feelings that we didn’t understand

Why can’t we take that one step back?

Why do we fear some attack?

When all I did was take your hand

    Friends first, please understand

Friends first, it’s all that’s at hand

Don’t think too hard about what can be

Try to discover the friend that’s me

    Friends first, please understand

There will be times, when you want to cry out

Feelings of hurt that you just can’t sort out

Don’t be afraid to call me, I am there for you

A shoulder and an ear is all that I can do

Maybe one day, we will someday fall in love

But until that time, there is something to resolve

There is no pressure, no rushing, no expectations

I am not here to create more complications

Friends first, is what I need now

Friends first, to get over the pain somehow

    I want you
