3 Little Blue Books for Authors - Gisela Hausmann

53 Dos & Don’ts Nobody Is Telling You

    Working Smarter

Since March 2017, when Amazon made the last big changes to their community guidelines, I make all my ebooks available for pre-order on Amazon. It helps me in gaining verified starter reviews.

Making a book available for pre-order also stimulates discussions about the upcoming release; sometimes, funny or weird things happen.

During the pre-order phase of my book NAKED REVIEW How to Get Book Reviews, I received 30+ review requests from authors who don’t belong to my tribe but must have seen my postings on social media platforms. Since typically my fans will post or tweet, got your book… I knew that I probably had not sold 30+ books to people who aren’t in my circle yet.

Slightly amused, I posted on Facebook, Why is it that every time I publish a book about how to get reviews, I get 30+ requests from people who won’t even buy my book at this extremely cheap price?

And, somebody replied, because it is easier…

    Hmm…

But, that’s just the thing – Trying to take the easy route never leads to success!

In all of history, not one single person succeeded by taking the easy route!

    *

The only thing we can do is to work smarter. Which is what this book is about.

Two significant problems of the self-publishing industry

    Problem #1

During the last two years, the self-publishing industry has been invaded by Internet marketers who offer various concepts that reveal how to achieve success … and also sell online promotional services.

Free webinars, training sessions, and white papers can only be accessed by giving an email address which allows the organizers to try selling expensive programs to their subscribers.

Much of what is offered doesn’t work well for many indie authors, hence most internet marketers create new programs all the time. They also lure in new customers constantly. They do that by advertising, We’ll help you in publishing the book you always wanted to publish – for free.

If you think back to your high school days, undoubtedly, you’ll remember classmates who never enjoyed the English classes. Still, to win new customers, Internet marketers will encourage them too to write their book. This steady influx of wannabe authors is crowding the market and creating additional problems for dedicated authors who hone their craft and really work on improving their marketing strategies.

    Problem #2

Probably, one reason you acquired this book is that you noticed that I am an Amazon top reviewer. Why do I review? Bloomberg asked me this question when they interviewed me about Amazon’s review platform.

I believe that online reviews are the greatest invention since PCs became widely available. As long as trolls and fake reviewers can be kept in check, consumers get an opportunity to find out why others liked or disliked a particular product. At the same time, sellers get feedback from actual customers.

However, internet marketers never sell their products in ecommerce stores, probably because they don’t want to share profits. The downside is that customers cannot post their objective opinions. Almost all Internet marketers feature only testimonials on their websites and they control whose opinions they present. That’s a disadvantage for buyers. As a dedicated reviewer, I don't like the testimonial system.

    BASIC WARNINGS

    #1

Even in a weak minute, when everything seems to go wrong, resist the urge to buy products from sellers who promise easy marketing solutions. Not even J.K. Rowling’s or Stephen King’s journey to becoming a bestselling author was easy, and neither will yours. Anybody who suggests otherwise probably has ulterior motives.

    #2

Beware of the word free. The concept that anybody could write a book and boost it to bestseller level by relying only on free advice and free help is absurd. If it was possible, everybody would do it.

    #3

In the day and age of content marketing, many people blog to find clients. But, not all bloggers produce original content based on factual research.

For example: There are more than 300 million blogs on How to Get Book Reviews. If, indeed, there were 100 to 300 million expert reviewers who also blog about this topic, there would be no shortage of book reviewers. This implies that many of these free blogs feature re-chewed content, which too may be re-chewed content, similar to the Telephone Game. The same goes for every other topic.

Hence, always study bios of the authors, see if they themselves actually do what they advise on, and don’t be shy to ask questions.

    #4

Whether it’s blogs or books – Always check the publication date. Things change quickly these days. If a blog is older than six months, chances are at least some parts may be outdated. Unfortunately, even famous authors do not update their books. In some cases, their traditional publisher may not be interested in updating the book because they closed the book’s budget.

    LEGALITIES

    #5

Ignorantia legis neminem excusat (Latin for ignorance of law excuses no one).
