INTRODUCTION
On February 2, 2006 my life changed in a drastic way. I went from mediocrity to destiny. I went from regular faith to radical faith. In moments, everything changed. It all began when I decided to launch the House of Prayer at the West Side Community Center. My first prospects were a few friends and students from my wife’s school, totaling twenty people. I was so excited! I could barely keep myself calm. My wife and I cleaned, painted, and transformed the room into something like a sanctuary. Every Thursday, we would set up and break down. We would restack the toilet paper, prepare the napkins, place fabric across the tables, vacuum the carpet, put the chairs out and position the pulpit. We did this faithfully for two months, but it wasn’t growing like I thought it would.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t question God during this process.
The next month, a young man was shot outside the building right in front of the gate. What a devastating blow to the ministry! Due to safety concerns, over half of the people left. They felt the neighborhood wasn’t a good fit
for them and they told us to our faces that God had called me into this, but not them! Heavy punch to my spirit! Sometimes it felt like a literal punch to the body. I was frustrated and shocked. I can even admit that I was disappointed. I knew what God had told me to do, yet everything appeared to be going in the opposite direction. I mean really.
I left a job that was paying me $40,000/year with benefits. I left on nothing but faith. And here was the real kicker: I never gave up even though it got darker and darker. Instead of throwing in the towel, I decided to Go Hard.
Instead of giving in to my discouragement, I told the remaining members to get ready for a mind-blowing launch Service on April 16, 2006. I planned for the greatest program ever! I asked the lady who ran the community center to reserve the gymnasium, equipped with a stage and 150-300 chairs. I set out as many chairs as I could.
I’m going to fill this place up, I thought to myself.
Well, indeed it was an awesome EASTER CELEBRATION service! There were 150 chairs set up and about seven people came. Did you hear me? Seven people! But you couldn’t have told me anything! I preached that day like I was preaching to a stadium with thousands of listeners. I forgot to mention: two of the people were my cousin and her friend who drove two hours from Long Island (NY) to Asbury Park (NJ) to support us.
Yes. That’s right. They skipped their own service that day at Perfecting Faith Church with Pastor Donnie McClurkin, and I’m sure they were shocked to see the turnout. Can you say with me DISCOURAGED! But I didn’t give in to my feelings. Instead, I decided to GO HARD!
Each person who attended the launch service that day caused my faith to increase. They pushed me to intensify my prayer and devotional time with God. That was the moment that my life began to change. Why? Because I was learning, through experience, how to trust what God said, even though I couldn’t see any evidence.
I developed tougher skin. I learned to lean on God in a totally different way. I told the Lord that day, I will go as hard as I can to build what You told me to build.
I wasn’t willing to give up on this dream, especially because I knew that God had called me to reach my destiny. So, for financial reasons we switched the church to our home. I printed post cards and passed out thousands of flyers. I talked and talked and talked until we began to see growth. My family began coming and other families started to pile in until we could no longer fit in my house. I then started to pray and ask God for the next step.
We were now at about 30 people. The time was right to move out of my house; especially when people began to drive by and just ring the doorbell and just walk in without my knowledge! I recall a lady who said she was driving by and stopped in while we were praising God. She said, I felt like God wanted me to come in here and just experience His presence.
At that point, I knew it was time
