    The room erupted in gasps and murmurs at the mention of his name. Andrew could feel movement behind him, likely men stepping in front of women and women pushing children behind their skirts. He bowed low in the direction of the king.

    Your Majesty. He turned to bend toward the princess. Your Royal Highness. As he righted himself, he met the gaze of the stoic princess and wondered what she saw. With her eyes, of course, he knew she saw the man he presented to the world, a murderous masked man clothed in scarlet and black. But, with her heart, Andrew hoped she saw the man he truly was, a man of honor and devotion, a man weary of the offers from insipid women and the scraping of their pub-keeping Fathers, and, ultimately, a man hopelessly in love.

    If only he could see in those emerald green eyes a mere hint of acceptance of the things he had confided to her the evening before. It had been a risk to visit her, but one he’d felt compelled to take.

    The roughness of the bricks felt familiar beneath Andrew’s hands. He scaled the castle wall as he had done dozens of times, only more quickly, as he’d been a boy of 12 the last time he’d made the climb. He threw a leg over the window ledge, then waited for his eyes to adjust in the darkness of the chamber. He looked where he expected to see the princess, asleep in her four poster, and was not disappointed - the bed stood approximately ten paces in front of him and on the wall to his left,
