唐朝唐太宗李世民的政績可觀，是自古以來所未有的，也是歷史上空前繁榮而顯赫的太平盛世，史稱貞觀之治；可是貞觀後期景況不如前期 (以貞觀23年〈公元637年〉為界，分前期、後期)。本書故事背景是貞觀後期的唐太宗晚年 。
本書故事由唐太宗東征高句麗開始，掀開貞觀盛世哀愁的面紗；唐太宗逝世，降下了貞觀盛世的帷幕。唐朝亡了，依然有中國；但唐朝以後，卻沒有像貞觀時期那樣顯赫而值得欽羨的時代了。
本書故事涉及貞觀之治的治國大計乃至玄奘的心經以及人生真諦，也旁及兵制及高句麗與百濟史事和中日之戰，冀能引起讀者緬懷我國古人的史事和人生智慧；小說就是在人生智慧的底紙上描繪人與事。

作者簡介

祖籍廣東大鵬古城，童年移居香港，在香港和英國的大學學習，從事學校教學與行政工作。曾任香港：教區學校中學校長聯會主席、考試局中央委員、 地區法院審裁顧問、三個教育機構顧問、中國外籍人員子弟學校認證委員。

退休後讀書寫作自娛。

The author was born in Dapeng City, Guangdong, and moved to Hong Kong in his childhood. After his tertiary education in Hong Kong and England , he established a career in education and school administration in Hong Kong.

Positions held： chairman of the Diocesan School Heads Board, central board member of the HK Exam Authority， member of the District Court Assessors Panel, consultant of three educational institutions, accreditation team member to evaluate schools for children of foreign nationals.

In retirement, he gives himself much to reading and writing.
