    Vaastu Shaastra: An Introduction

When in trouble a person thinks about a lots of reasons behind his condition and he also ponders upon the thought that there may be some Vaastu defects in his house or office. Similarly, when a person thinks of purchasing house or office these day, the most commonly used word is regarding this is Vaastu.

Vaastushaastra is a science from Vedic times. This is not related to a particular religion, but has relations to universal truths. Vaastu has been made useful by the sages after rigorous research for years. Vaastu treats the energy emanating from earth, as a person and terms it Vaastu Purush. It means the physical form of micro wonderful energy. Thus Vaastu treats energy in a physical form.

Vaastushaastra can bring improvement in all the aspects of our life. If Vaastu defects of house, office or business place are removed using Vaastu then we get wonderful results. That’s why this age old science is gaining fame now, even in western countries too.

Vaastu is not only related to the construction part of the building but it is the science of doing construction at some places and leaving rest open to lead a happy & comfortable life. Vaastu is also art of decorating the buildings. If the Vaastu of work place & house of a person is good, then only he will remain cool & calm. This will improve his performance & development. In short we can say that Vaastu is a science of leading a happy life by taking maximum benefit of natural energy.

A team is required to construct a building. Initially there used to be an architect & an engineer in this team. Then with time interior decorators got introduce in this team. Vaastu entered the scene in 1990. Vaastu, means science which directs to use of natural energy in such a way to lead to happy & comfortable life. Vaastu is not new to our country, sages made it useful science for common people, after research of many years. The Chinese were already working on the same and they studied Vaastu as well. The Chinese then made suitable changes to this and evolved their own Vaastushastra known as Fengshui.

The question arises, why Vaastu, our old, wealthy heritage and scientific branch became obsolete? Its answer is quite simple. In old times education was provided only verbally, writing came into existence quite later. Secondly Sages, who worked on it linked it to the religion to make it mandatory for common man to practice. This made it superstition in the view of our modern society and they started ignoring the same.

Man has been trying to lead simple & happy life from the beginning. People of all the subcontinents made houses to live according to their respective climatic conditions. With development and time villages turned into cities and small houses changed into multi storied buildings.

Vaastu is an old science of coordination of size, ratio & directions with the surrounding environment, which affects house, shops, industry, school, hospital, dharmshala, community offices, religious places, Rivers-Streams, grave yards, immoral places (casino & brothel) and even road, tiraha, gali, mohalla & city, means practically everything on the face of the earth.

Energy flows uninterrupted on empty piece of land. When construction is done, we build walls, windows-doors and create obstacles in this flow. This obstructed flow creates an imbalance. To remove this imbalance, by certain scientific laws is Vaastu. It is very important to make coordination, between the place of entrance and free flow of the energy to lead happy & successful life. One can make life successful & simple by applying this wonderful science. Please bear in mind that good plot and good house are always square.

A person takes utmost care and interest to decorate and make his new house as cosy & comfortable as possible, internally & externally both. But seldom has he thought that whether this new house is going to make his life happy, wealthy, famous, healthy & peaceful or not? If we live in a palatial house with all the modern and comfortable things but if the family is not happy, health is not good, mental tensions prevailing and facing many accidents etc. then is there any use in living there?

Architecture of today’s buildings is entirely different from what it used to be in old times. In old times buildings used to have almost no Vaastu defects. Now a days the buildings have several defects. Till the mid of last century houses did not have toilets and underground water sources, inside the building. People used to go out to answer nature’s call. They used to fetch drinking water from wells. Old buildings used to have square shapes with even floors. Life was simple & happy for those living in such houses. Villages tuned into towns & towns into cities with increasing population. There are no jungles now near cities. It became difficult to go for daily routine. This led to a significant change in the architecture of the houses. People started building a toilet block in the back yard of the house. Septic tanks were not in use in those days and sweeper used to come to clean the toilets. It was OK till then, but increased population further compelled to reduce the plot size. In spite of smaller size, people want to keep all the amenities inside their houses to citing privacy. So no matter the plot size is even 30x50, an underground water source, a septic tank and couple of toilets are built on the plot. The direction in which toilet is situated becomes defected due to negative energy. For example if the toilet is built in the wealth angle of the house then financial situation is deteriorated, if it is built on the place of fame then brings defamation. Similarly if the underground water source & water tank are built in right direction, they become beneficial otherwise disrupt whole life of those living in the house. Many such Vaastu defects are seen in the modern houses.

We can see many examples of Vaastu around us. We find it suitable to go repeatedly to the house of friend, as this gives us pleasure but for some other house opposite is true. We see that some people living in a house as tenants earn money and become successful very soon. They build their own house and shift therein. But there are some houses where people become tenant and their lives become full of misery. Their family members suffer mental agony and they leave that house soon. It has been observed that People living in big grand houses don’t conceive. The house remain unclaimed without an heir and becomes ruins. Many entrepreneurs face laborers’ problem, accidents, and raids of govt. agency and they close the enterprise. On the other hand many people start humbly and become successful in their venture soon and lead happy & wealthy life.

If even a hut is built as per Vaastu principles, its residents live happily. All the family members grow and gradually life becomes good. And if the Vaastu of even a bungalow is bad then the residents have to struggle even for daily needs. Their respect in the society starts diminishing and they lead miserable life due to mental & physical problems. There are certain Vaastu defects which start showing their impact too fast, so one should not delay in removing the same.

There is a misconception about the Vaastu, that to construct as per Vaastu is very expensive and it wastes space too. But it is completely baseless. In fact Vaastu allows one to use most of the place. If a Vaastu suitable house is built on even a small plot it looks quite big & open.

Vaastu is applicable everywhere, whether it is your own or rented, it will affect you. This can be understood by an example, if you are travelling in a boat and it has a hole then you also will be drown with it, no matter whether it belongs to you or somebody else. Similarly the Vaastu of the house in which you are living or doing business affects you.

A good Vaastu consultant has to be especially sensitive to two things; needs of the residents and needs of the premises. The building is for the people residing there. A good consultant of Vaastu coordinates in these two to get best result.

    What is Vaastu?

Something to eat, wear & stay define most elementary needs of human beings. The abode of a person, where he lives or uses is known as Vaastu, in common parlance.

    Vaastu word is derived from Sanskrit. This word has been explained, in Vaman Shivram Apte’s Sanskrit-Hindi dictionary, as below;

    वास्तु शास्त्रादृतेतस्य न स्यल्लक्षणनिर्णयः।

    तस्मात् लोकस्य कृपया सभामेतत्र्दुरीयते।।

It means, a house built as following Vaastu principles, provides happiness and assists in getting rid of all kind of loans. Neglecting Vaastu results in, unwanted journeys, defamation, sorrow and disappointments. That’s why Vaastushaastra has been provided to make people happy.

Vaastushaastra is known as Fengshui, in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia etc. It is termed & pronounced as, Jio Meshi, in Latin. Baguwatantra is the name of Vaastushaastra in Tibet. Arabians call it the Science of Sand.

Acharyas- Mentioned in Vrihat Samhita & Matsyapurana

Most referred and spoken about Acharyas of old times are; Vishwakarma, Bhrigu, Atri, Vashishth, Agniruddha, May, Narad, Vipalaksh, Purandare, Brahma, Kumar, Shaunak, Garg, Vasudev, Vrishpati, Manu, Parashar, Nandishwar, Bhardwaj, Prahlad, Nagnjit, Agastya & Markandeya. Most famous of the above in present times are, Vishwakarma and May.

    Ancient Books on Vaastu

As per Mansar, there are 32 authentic books on Vaastu. Some of them are; Samarangansutradhar, Manushyalay-Chandrika, rajvallabham, rupmandapam Vaastu Vidya, Shilprantam, Shilpratrakar MyVaastu, Sarvarth Shilpchintamani, Maybhat, Vishwkarma Vaastushaastra, Mansar, Vrihsamhita, Vishnu Dharmottar, Aparajit Prichchh, Jay Puchchh, Prasad Mandan, Praman Panjari, Vaastushaashtra, Vaastu Mandan, Shilpratna and Praman Manjari etc. Sthapatya Ved, a subved of ‘Atharvved, is termed as most ancient & most authentic among all. Vaatuspati", a name of God is mentioned many times in Rigveda.

    Vaastudev of Vaastushaastra

Sages of our country were quite wise persons and they made every useful thing religiously compulsory to make it followed by all. It is observed that nobody dares breaking the religious laws. We all believe anything referred in ancient scriptures.

    Vaastudev was created by Sages to make people follow Vaastu principles in building hoses, so as to lead simple & happy life. Vaastudev is the Presiding Officer of the building, built on a plot. There are many stories in old volumes of Vaastushaastra, about creation of Vaastudev. The most famous of these is said by Vishwakarma (Reference:Vishwakarma Prakash). The story goes as below;

There was a great specter in the Treta Yug, who covered the whole universe by his body in sleeping position. All the Gods, including Indra, were stupefied looking him and went to meet Brahmaji. They addressed him, Father of the Universe, this great specter has come now what should we do?

Brahmaji said, Don’t worry, just catch him and lie him face down on the earth and you all will be fearless. The angry Gods, then caught this great specter and lied him face down on earth to make him present physically. This was later on termed Vaastupurush.

There are three-four version s of stories related to the birth of Vaastupurush, in Vaastu books. All these summarily say that every plot is living entity. If all the portions (Parts) of this are kept intact, clean & systematic then this spirit remains alive forever. Residents of a house built according to Vaastu principles will lead simple & happy life.

    Matsypurana, says that 45 different portions of the body of Vaastupurush were pressed by 45 different Gods, and they sat over there to become Presiding Officers of that part. This can be depicted as below;

As per hypothesis Vaastupurush has his head facing down in northeast, north & east directions, his head & both arms in northwest & southeast, respectively and legs in southwest angle.

A plot becomes a Vaastu when surrounded by a compound wall. Even if a small portion of a plot is separated and surrounded by a wall, then all the elements & energy is found in it, like big plot, also. It means every piece of plot is Vaastu and is a small replica of earth. Vaastupurush is the Presiding Officer of the building built on that portion. His face is in northeast angle of the plot. Scientifically this depicts the fact of his getting energy and light from the Sun, as this being the angle of Sunrise. Which it receives through its eyes, nose and mouth.

That’s why northeast angle of a plot is kept open to get auspicious results. Left hand of Vaastupurush is in northwest angle. Heart is also near the left hand. Northwest angle provides Oxygen, necessary to keep heart working. Right hand of Vaastupurush is in southeast angle. He gets his energy from here. His legs are in south of southwest angle. It is kept closed to store energy gained from all the directions.

    Indian Vaastushaastra

Five elements of Universe, water, Earth, Fire, Air and Sky make base of Indian Vaastushaastra. Whole universe & our body are made of these five elements. To build, decorate and maintain house as per these five elements is called Vaastu. Vaastushaastra guides us to take maximum advantage of the magnetic energy & Sun energy for living happy & simple life. If one aligns with three elements, Earth, Water and Fire then remaining two Air and Sky automatically align.

    Significance of Sun in Vaastu

Sun is the foundation of this universe, providing life to all. Life on earth is due to energy of Sun. That’s why north & east directions get so much significance in Vaastu. Sun rays enter every house from northeast angle. Space energy too enters house form this angle. Both these energies together make a special energy region, which provides positive results to the residents.

The Sun is the source of all vital force, this fact was known to human beings from the ancient times. This fact is reinforced by the presence of tradition of Sun worship in almost all the old civilizations.

The science has also proved that morning time Sun rays contain many substances beneficial to our body. When these rays falls of our skin, Vitamin D essential for our body is absorbed. The Sun rays look white in colour by naked eyes but consist of seven colours; violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. These colours affect our health in different manners. Sun rays are used extensively in Naturopathy. The warmth & shine of these rays kills many microorganisms. Sun rays in the morning have low temperature & shinning and are best. That’s why Vaastu suggests to keep maximum open area and windows in east direction. This makes residents healthy.

Special: June Solstice & December Solstice, two annual movements of the Sun have no effect on Vaastu of the building.

    Vaastushaastra is Science

All the Vaastu principles are based on scientific observations. To prove this we can consider the following Vaastu principles like -

Water in northeast Angle: Morning Sunrays destroy all the microorganisms in the under-ground water source, situated in northeast angle. Science accepts this as well.

Courtyard in East Direction: This is suggested to get exposure to the morning Sunrays, which are full of vital energy.

Trees in East Directions: It is advised in Vaastu not to grow big trees with broad leaves in east directions as they obstruct the Sun rays.

Kitchen in Southeast Angle: Morning Sunrays destroy microorganisms when enter kitchen from southeast angle and sanitize the kitchen.

Higher & Thick Walls in West Direction: Morning Sunrays are beneficial but after noon the temperature is quite high and makes them intolerable. Their impact now is negative. To avoid this impact it is advised by Vaastu to build thick & high walls in west direction.

Head in South Direction while Sleeping: Head of human beings acts as North Pole and legs as South Pole. If a person sleeps with head in North direction then the repulsion will disturb his sleep. For sound sleep & good health it is advised by Vaastu to sleep with head in South direction.

Many such logics of Vaastu are also supported by scientific observations, hence Vaastu is also science. Thus Vaastu defects need to be eliminated scientifically, only.

Destiny and Vaastu : A Truth

There is nothing important than Fate. A person can thrive and succeed even with weak Vaastu and good Fate with more efforts; he gets success without much efforts, when Vaastu & Fate both are good; and if Vaastu is good and Fate bad then the time passes with less sufferings; his life becomes hell if Vaastu and Fate both are bad. A good road may take you to your destination comfortably in your vehicle but this travel will be tiring if the road is not good. In both the cases the vehicle is same and it is only the vehicle which is taking him to the destination but significance of road cannot be overlooked. Vaastushaastra is also significant and makes our life simple & comfortable.

It is true that directions cannot change conditions but it can bring some respite from the problems. Many times people say that one gets its due with fate, why to involve in Vaastu then? But it is also a fact that we go to see a doctor when we fall ill, knowing that it’s due to fate only. Why? If it’s in our fate then we will get healthy, why to go to a doctor? But we do not wait for the fate and consult doctor. Similalry applying Vaastu, when we face physical, mental & financial problems, it is wise to change the effects of fate. We cannot change the fate but can change its effects by improving Vaastu.

It is a common curiosity of all that when one gets Vaastu of his house improved. This can be understood with this example; Mr Sharma felt tooth ache while taking lunch one day. He thought to see his dentist but then forgot altogether. He then felt the same ache during his dinner and decided to see dentist on the following morning. He again forgot it next day due to hectic schedule next day too. He neglected it like this because it was felt when he chewed and 15 days thus passed. On the sixteenth day he found swelling in the mouth, in morning. He had acute pain in tooth. Now it was apparent for him to see his dentist. He went to his clinic to find the dentist was out of the town for four days. Mr. Sharma didn’t have faith in any other dentist. He waited for his dentist eating pain killers and saw him on fifth day. He got relief instantly after the treatment. This case shows that Mr. Sharma had to suffer for 15 days with normal pain and 4 days with acute pain by Fate. Then by fate he was relieved from his pain by the treatment of his dentist. His dentist was a medium to relieve him from pain in this case because he only knew the way to treat him. Similarly when a person suffers due to bad Vaastu and due to change in fate consults a Vaastu consultant to get relief. Here Vaastu consultant is medium because only he knows the way to change the Vaastu. ‘It is to be remembered that no Vaastu consultant can change fate of anybody.’

Let us see one more example; Mr. Rastogi went to see his doctor with complaint of chest pain & was informed by the doctor that he had a heart attack. He was advised complete rest. Operation was scheduled two days later. Mr. Rastogi asked the doctor to admit him immediately and operate when suitable. He was admitted and operated upon after two days and then returned home happily. He felt fitter & happier and did his daily chores with vigour, after returning from hospital. Similarly Mr. Mehta of Faridabad had chest pain and went to see his doctor. He too had heart attack and was advised bed rest. Further doctor advised him for operation, after he settled. Mr. Mehta asked the doctor about expenses in operation and duration of stay in hospital, after the operation. He told the doctor that he would consult his family and let him know. He then spoke to his family about this incidence citing an expense of Rs 2 Lakh of operation too. He accused doctors of looting and said that he only had Gastritis. This sort of thinking of Mr. Mehta forbade him to consult his doctor again and didn’t get operated. He died of second heart attack after two and half months.

Above mentioned both the gentlemen were not fools or wise. In fact Mr. Rastogi had more life remaining and life of Mr. Mehta was over, as per their fates.thats why Mr. Rastogi got himself operated at once, as suggested by the doctor while Mr. Mehta didn’t heed to the advice of his doctor. Here doctor became medium to heal Mr. Rastogi.

You will think like Mr. Rastogi when under stress due to Vaastu and consult a Vaastu consultant to make life happy. Here the Vaastu consultant acts as medium. But this is the case only when your fate has happiness for you in the store. Otherwise you will act like Mr. Mehta and think what will happen by demolishing windows and changing doors? So whether you will stay in a Vaastu suitable house or not is fate dependent. Your house will be Vaastu suitable if fate has happiness in store for you.

    Belief and Vaastu

Almost all the civilizations have great faith in religious symbols. Swastika, Om, Shri, Panchagulak Haath, Ek Omkar and Lakshmi Yantra, Shriyantra, Kuber Yantra, Kali Yantra, & Surya Yantra etc are some of the main religious symbols and Yantras of India. Every religion teaches us to have faith in a supreme power. This is not mere nonsensical religious thing but has effects. A survey done in Australia, revealed that faith in God makes life happy. A survey entitled The Spirituality and Wellbeing in Australia done by Edith Cowan University and Deakin University, revealed the fact that believers in God were happier than the atheists. Believers are more sensitive towards society and cooperate well with others.

Many researches have been done on prayers too and found that it does miracles. An intensive research on the Contribution of Prayer in Longevity revealed stunning results. The scientists found that Prayers release a special type of chemical in the body, which stops breaking of cells. Thus practically stops aging. This confirms that Prayer can bring longevity. It has also been found that people doing regular prayers and have positive thoughts for prayers have 65% less chances of heart disease.

Educationists had already concluded, centuries before that starting education with common prayer leads to more positive & conscience studies. That’s all over the world every day schools start with assembly. It has also been found that the houses where at least one day they go for assembly and pray together have more cordial relations among family members.

Almost all the educated class thinks that wearing religious symbols is an indication of being superstitious and idle. But it’s a fact that wearing these symbols helps a lot, psychologically. A team of researchers led by Professor Richard Wiseman of Hartford University, Britain has observed that wearing these religious symbols, improves Fate of people.

So definitely using these symbols is beneficial and makes thinking positive. People using them remain more optimistic about their future. Disappointment is converted to optimism in their approach. They work hard and succeed.

Our country has also seen a surge in use of these symbols, since last few years to take care of Vaastu defects and mostly Shriyantra, Swastika, Vaastudosh Nivarak Yantra, Swastika Pyramid, Siddh Ganapati and Panchmukhi hanuman are used more frequently. Some Chinese symbols like; Laughing Buddha, Double Happiness Symbol, Fuk-Luk-Shu, Triple legged Frog & Lucky Coin are also in use. All these symbols, whether spellbound or not are not very much useful for removal of Vaastu defects. These act as supporting things to raise the confidence of the people like the vitamin tablets in a disease along with medicine.

Can vitamin tablets cure a disease? No. Similarly Vaastu defects also cannot be removed by using religious symbols. One has to make necessary amendments in the architecture of the building to correct its Vaastu.

If a house has doors in the east of southeast angle for house & compound wall both, with underground water tanks in southeast angle then there will be disputes among family members. Family members will be ready to help each other but won’t agree with each other. People of such families have litigations with others too. Now to remove this Vaastu defect no religious symbol will work. One has to close the doors of house and compound wall in southeast direction and open the same in northeast angle & underground water tank will be soiled filled and new to be made in east of northeast angle. All these efforts will remove this defect altogether.

If we put a zero after number one, each time this zero increases the value of one by ten times but if we put the zero before the number one and no effect will on its value. This is an apt example to understand the role of religious symbols to remove Vaastu defects. It is also a fact that such symbols add to good vaastu as well.

    Auspicious Symbols Flow Positive Energy

There has been tradition of making auspicious symbols outside the houses since time immemorial in the world. Many such symbols have been found in many places, which prove beyond doubt that these were in use 2500-3000 years back too. Some specific colors have been used to draw these symbols in all the civilizations. Most used colors to draw these auspicious symbols is red. Yellow and White come after red but nowhere grey & black were found to draw these symbols. Both these colors are not considered auspicious. In present day still people draw such symbols outside their houses. Om, Swastika, Mangal Kalash, panchagulak Haath, Prints of Hands, Labh-Shubh, Kamal, Shri and 786 etc. are used frequently as auspicious symbols. These are drawn with a belief that no positive energy will enter the house and bring happiness & wealth. Many times saffron and turmeric is used in absence of red color. Red color indicates development as per Indian traditions. This has increased significance because it is the color of Mars too. Songs of Mangal are sung at happy occasions. To decorate houses with garlands of Ashoka & Mango leaves is auspicious. Symbols of Om & Swastika are also drawn on the main entrance of house in India. Swastika represents Lord Vishnu & Shri Maa Lakshmi. Some people put an idol of Lord Ganesha in the centre of main entrance of the house flanked by the names of His wives, Riddhi & Siddhi. It is believed that doing this brings wisdom & wealth both. Mangal Kalash is also drawn outside the house to bring good luck. A bouquet of flowers is kept on the door of the house in Europe. Many houses have sign of cross outside. Pakua is another religious symbol put outside houses in East Asian countries like; China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore etc. This Pakua has shapes of Yen & Ying. Mirror & Wind Chimes are two other religious symbols used in these countries for good luck. Red color is used mostly in China. Extensive use of red color always defines Chinese population anywhere in the world, separately.

Symbol of Dragon is termed auspicious in China. Tibetans use flags of various colors. There a tradition of drawing twin fishes in many parts of the world, including India. As per Hindu mythology, first incarnation of lord Vishnu is Fish. It is said that to start anything, like a journey one must have a look at it and he is successful.

Fish Aquarium is considered significant in Fengshui. Keeping Fish Aquarium brings wealth, it is believed.

Negative energy cannot enter the house, which has auspicious symbols drawn. No evil spirit can look at this house. This also destroys negative energy in the surroundings of the house. That’s why tradition of auspicious symbols has been in existence since long. These symbols are beautiful too and make anybody feel good. A person with good feelings works with enthusiasm
