Introduction
COVID-19 has disrupted our educational system. School staff have had to change the way they teach. Families have had to change their schedules and be more involved than ever in helping with their children’s school tasks.
It’s challenging for everyone! But we’re in this together.
I wrote this book to help families with school-age children (grade 1 through high school) navigate the remote learning environment. I’ve seen and experienced how challenging eLearning can be, both as a psychologist working with children and families, and as a parent of distance learners. Almost 60% of parents of primary-school students and about half of parents of secondary-school students report that it’s difficult to support their children’s learning at home (Andrew, Cattan, Costa-Dias, Farquharson, Kraftman, Krutikove, Phimister, and Sevilla, 2020).
While remote learning may be new to millions of families, it’s not a novel concept. In fact, virtual learning has been around for years. In my role as an independent school psychologist, I completed psychoeducational and psychological evaluations on remote learners even before the pandemic. They had many of the same challenges that remote learners are facing today.
Families and educators thrust into this alternative way of learning are discovering that it may be an opportunity to embrace online learning and continue down this path. We’ll continue to see more eLearning in college, so having a solid remote-learning foundation will increase students’ chances of success in the future. The in-person environment will likely remain the main learning method for some time. But we’ll probably continue to see an increase in hybrid models, in which students split their time between online and in-person classrooms.
Whether your child is a distance learner, hybrid learner, or in-person learner, there’s something for all families in this book. If learning at a distance is already going well for you, that’s amazing, because it’s not easy. I hope you’ll find additional strategies in this book that help you make distance learning even better.
If eLearning has been a challenge and you’re looking for tips to help your child be successful, this book is here to assist. Remote learning can be overwhelming and frustrating, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. I want to help get you and your family to a place where it’s manageable—and even enjoyable.
This book is filled with strategies designed to improve the remote learning experience. Read this book slowly. It’s divided into sections so you can go back and re-read areas that apply to issues you’re trying to resolve.
As you begin to think about what strategies you would like to try, I encourage you to start small. Take a couple of tips from this book and apply them to your situation. After you’ve used those strategies, come back to this book, then choose and apply a couple more. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start, begin with the first strategy and build from there.
While these strategies may be helpful for all school-age children, you might use them differently for a first-grader than you would for a seventh-grader. If you have younger children, you’ll need to take the lead (and in some cases full responsibility) for using these strategies. And you may have to continue being a part of them. Younger children may not be ready to independently use and stick with these ideas. They can learn them, but they’ll need regular reinforcement and practice. Be patient.
If your child is going to school in person or participating in eLearning only temporarily, I hope you find a few tips here that you can apply when your child is at home completing homework or missed school and needs to complete assignments and projects at home. You’ll find that some of these strategies, if used correctly, will help build a foundation for achieving other personal and professional goals.
Finally, the strategies in this book are not an exhaustive list. Some families may have developed others that work for them. (I would love to hear about them!) While
