The feminist perspective of this book caught my interest and I couldn't stop reading! It is indeed fascinating to read that a goddess-centered worship exists in the form of Shaktism, an energy-focused worship which makes Shakti, the Divine Goddess, the center of worship. It is a very educational book about the origin of Shakti and its different forms. Due to the increasing popularity of yoga, it is adopted in multiple nations and religions. The benefits of Shakti are stated in the book and I totally recommend everyone who wants to achieve a positive mindset and energy in their life to give this book a chance.

The term shakti refers to multiple ideas. Its general definition is dynamic energy that is responsible for creation, maintenance, and destruction of the universe. It is identified as female energy because shakti is responsible for creation, as mothers are responsible for the birth. The word shakti literally means power. Shakti the innate power in reality, has five faces. It manifests as the power to be conscious, the power to feel ecstasy, the power of will, or desire, the power to know, and the power to act.

Shakti - Mari Silva

Introduction

Shakti, in Hindu tradition, is the Supreme Feminine Power. She is the Divine Mother of Creation, and the focus of this book.

Femininity and feminine power have always fascinated people all around the world. The mysterious femininity which runs through all cultures, projects that there exists something deep within, which is connected thoroughly to womanhood. Not surprisingly, Shakti tradition was and is still popular in the Indian subcontinent. The Shakti tradition believes that the supreme creator is a goddess and everything else is just a facade or a creation of the supreme feminine power. Shakti is the Universe, and it is the Creation. Without Shakti, the world simply cannot exist. It is what makes things happen. She controls everything.

A lot of myths are prevalent about the Shakti tradition. Some consider it to be scary, while others believe that it involves sacrifice, including human sacrifice. Most of these myths result from an orientalist presentation of the Indian Culture, such as in Indiana Jones and similar books and media. Shakti, in fact, is a celebration of the Divine Feminine who creates and controls the world. The union of Shiva and Shakti is responsible for creation.

This book contains basic and advanced theories and information related to Shakti. It offers a detailed history of the sect and its prevalence in Taoism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. It focuses on how it has become an integral part of Tibetan religion.

Various goddesses and forms of goddesses are worshipped in the Shakti tradition. While it is impossible to focus on them all, this book contains brief descriptions of the Tantric Goddesses or the Dasha Mahavidyas, Dakinis, Chausath Yoginis, etc. Thus, it touches both the light and dark goddesses.

An important part of the Shakta tradition is Kundalini. Kundalini, or the coiled serpent, is a chakra present at the base of the spine. It is the most important chakra as it holds the cosmic energy. It lies dormant, but when activated, it can spread a sense of bliss often compared to an electric current throughout the body. In Shakta tradition, Kundalini is supposed to represent Divine Mother Goddess Adi Parashakti or Kubjika. She is the Mother of the Universe and rules the Kundalini. This book contains the basics of Kundalini and the various ways it can be activated. One of the major ways of activating the Kundalini is through Yoga. This book also contains some basic information related to yoga, especially Ashtanga yoga.

Maya and Shakti are two interrelated; however, distinct and opposite concepts that prove how dualistic the Indian philosophy and tradition are. A small chapter dedicated to this duality, along with Chitta Shakti, will help you understand the intricate nature and the prevalence of Shakti.

This informative little book will introduce you to the fascinating world of Hindu and Buddhist gods and goddesses. Our amazing world is one of wonder and sometimes chaos, and the ancient sages of India tried to make sense of it, calling on the mystical world of the deity to assist and protect them. Through sacred texts unearthed from hundreds of years ago, these gods and goddesses came alive.

The Divine Mother or the Supreme Feminine Power was to be perceived as being the most important Goddess, a force of energy that is benevolent and vengeful. When angered, she is ferocious. When at peace, she is the Mother of creation standing as a protector over the universe. Her name is Shakti. It is she who is worshipped throughout India and through the Hindu religion. It is she who strides through the pages of this book, guiding those who worship and call upon her name.

To awaken the Supreme Feminine power, gurus, sages, and teachers have guided disciples along the path to enlightenment for centuries. These practices are still utilized today in yoga, symbolism, and the worship of statues and icons. The book will offer students, teachers, practitioners, and those who are curious, a journey into the fascinating world of Shakti. The worship of Shakti and the Yoga tradition will be discussed in easily accessible language and the fascinating stories (Purana) will inspire you.

PART ONE: Shakti in Shakta Tradition

Chapter One: Shakti Worship in India and Tibet

Origins

Shakti is the personification of a goddess: a goddess who takes many different forms and is the creator of the universe, creative energy, and power from which all life springs. She is the power who created Shiva, the most powerful God in Hinduism. It is believed that without the power of his Shakti, Shiva would be an empty vessel, bereft of power, nothing more than a lifeless corpse. To put this in another manner, Shakti is the Mother of Creation, the Divine Power.

To better comprehend the worship of Shakti, it is useful to note that from ancient times, Gods and Goddesses have been worshipped by all civilizations. The most notable in western civilizations are the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Egypt. For example, In Roman mythology, Juno is perceived as the most powerful goddess. In Greek mythology, she becomes the wife of Zeus. Importantly, she is known as the goddess of marriage and childbirth (Juno Regina). Isis, in Egyptian mythology, is known as the Mother of all Gods. She not only nurtured mortals, but she also nurtured the gods too. Shakti, like these other powerful goddesses, is both benign and bountiful, malevolent and vengeful and is considered the Divine Mother.

Goddesses in a variety of cultures and traditions are called the creators and destructors of worlds: hence the view in most traditions that nature is female. The term mother nature, the life force that springs from the center of the universe, is in common usage even today. As human beings continue to wonder at the miracle of birth and the rebirth of nature with each coming spring, mortals are also reminded of the havoc that nature creates through hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, drought, and disease.

Thus, Shaktism is energy-focused worship in India, which places the Divine Goddess at the center of the worship. Being the source of all energy, she takes on many different forms and has many different names. Referred to in ancient religious scripts in Hinduism, the tradition of goddess-centered worship is still celebrated in popular festivals in Assam and West Bengal, and images of goddesses are seen in many temples across India.

In Hinduism, Adi Shakti is also known as Para Shakti (Prakriti) and Mahamaya One who creates the illusion of this world and thus who can free us from the illusion of this world (Amar Chitra Katha, 2008, p. 1). Certainly, in the ancient period of Hindu tradition, Adi Shakti was the most revered of all gods. She nurtured all her children and bestowed many blessings upon them, and according to Hindu tradition, while there are many goddesses in the pantheon, they are all manifestations of her different characteristics and attributes. She represents intellect and compassion. She is conscious and merciful, and she is also violent and vengeful.

If Adi Shakti is consciousness, it is a divided consciousness, one part being male and the other female. Thus, she is strong, powerful, gentle, and nurturing. One part cannot exist without the other. The masculine consciousness is, according to Pushkar Mahatta, 2017: word, ability, concept, and wire. Feminine (Prakriti) is meaning, inspiration, action, and electricity. The concept of the Divine Mother goes way back to Paleolithic times in India's cultural heritage. She becomes a weaker aspect of tradition during the Vedic period but emerges again in the Sanskrit tradition. Interestingly, like so many other cultural traditions across powerful goddesses, eventually became consorts to powerful gods, thus relegating them to secondary importance. In modern India, the Divine Mother has been restored. Increasingly, there are images of female gurus and saints, and you can go nowhere in India without seeing the Adi Shakti with many observers suggesting that the worship of goddesses is less a modern-day cult and more a religion. Throughout Indian history, the Divine Mother manifested in a myriad of goddesses and was known by a variety of names as her role mutated and transformed throughout time and culture.

Timeline

Vedic Age (1500-600 BCE)

What is seen during this period of Indian history is the weakening of the perceived power of the goddesses. They become consorts of the more powerful great gods. Three goddesses: The Divine Mothers, Prithvi, Aditi, and Saraswati were revered throughout this period, with images of Aditi being seen throughout Indian art for thousands of years. The familiar image of Aditi is depicted as a lotus-headed faceless goddess, legs spread apart in the birth position. The image shows Aditi as giving birth to the earth and thus was born the four quarters of the sky were created. Also present during this period were Saraswati (Vac) and Lakshmi (Sri). These two goddesses are significant because, like Prithvi, they are still worshipped today in the hymn Devi Sukta. Depicted as the Sovereign Queen, these goddesses are believed to manifest in all goddesses who breathe life into the earth.
