This does not teach which I liked. What it does is give a good overall look at the usage of sex throughout time and cultures.

About the Author

Introduction

In these materialistic times, the word mysticism is often misunderstood. That’s because mysticism is an experience that transcends the material world. It’s more than just a particular style of dreamy music or an exotic flavour of incense or a silver pendant with a mysterious-looking design on it. Mysticism goes beyond the realm of the physical senses—it’s often described, by people who understand it, in terms of union with the cosmos or an ascent to higher planes of existence. In modern terms, mysticism is an altered state of consciousness.

Since time immemorial there has been a close connection between mysticism and sexuality. One reason is that an orgasm—if it’s done properly—can be one of the most effective ways of entering a mystical state of consciousness. On a more abstract level, sexual intercourse can symbolize the interaction of any pair of opposites: light and dark, positive and negative, heaven and earth, yin and yang. Since ancient times such interactions have been seen as the fundamental dynamic of the universe—literally what makes the world go round. In traditional worldviews based on the notion of as above, so below, this imbues the sexual act with all kinds of magical and occult powers.

This book will take you on an A to Z journey through the world of mystical sex. It is divided into four chapters: the first deals with sexual symbolism, the second with the mystical power of orgasm, the third with New Age developments and the fourth with some of the darker, more occult aspects of the subject.

Chapter One: Fantasy Worlds

Sexual symbolism is more common in the religions and esoteric practices of the world than many people imagine. There are essentially two levels of symbolism: abstract symbolism in which the mental visualization of sexual activity is used for mystical purposes, and ritual symbolism in which participants indulge in physical sex for reasons other than procreation or sensual pleasure...

Ancient Wisdom

By far the best known form of mystical sex in the Western world is Tantra. This is ideally suited to contemporary lifestyles because it is based on the same values as modern society: an emphasis on monogamous, heterosexual relationships between sexual partners who have a loving, lifelong commitment to each other. Viewed in a historical perspective, however, Tantra is unusual in these respects—many mystical sex traditions favour homosexuality over heterosexuality, promiscuity over monogamy, and personal enlightenment over love and compassion. Many of these less well-known approaches to mystical sex will be discussed later in the book, but Tantra is the obvious place to start.

Tantra has its origins more than two thousand years ago in the Hindu religious tradition of the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion, with a vast range of gods and goddesses, but most Hindu practitioners focus their worship on just one or two favoured deities. Tantra is based in the
