About this ebook

Protecting His Wolfe

This Wolfe will need a Pigg to save the day.

Crime is rampant. The police's hands are tied. But mine aren't. Some would call me a vigilante, but I prefer savior. This town is mine, and the crime's got to go.

Innocent Betsie Wolfe stumbles upon a murder. The small-town girl had left her cozy little life for a job in the big city, never expecting to become a witness to a murder or face vicious threats. I'd hoped she would run back to her preacher father, but she's made of sterner stuff, and I can respect that.

Handsome Detective Jonah Pigg is attracted to the ingénue and settles her into his home under the protection of the three brothers who own the Pigg Detective Agency. It will take all his detective work to keep her safe, and I won't make it easy.

Passion has a way of igniting when people are under stress, and lust leads Betsie and Jonah into each other's arms. But will the good detective be able to save her, or will she become another victim?

One way or another, this town will be cleaned up.

    CHAPTER ONE

Death comes for everyone. Some just find it at the end of a long life, while others find it after pain and violence. Looks like today might be your day for the latter, the dark figure muttered under his breath as he stood alone in the alley. He clenched and unclenched his hands, aching to get them around the neck of his prey. Death was too good for her. Torture, pain, suffering...his heart sped as he imagined his foe under his control.

His need for violence was increasing with each day as the daily stress unraveled his careful façade. The dark stranger rubbed his hands together, his glee escaping through a short squeal. He quickly pushed it down and stuck his hands into the pockets of his trench coat. His fingers caressed the drug vial hidden and waiting for his prey.

Hurry to your death, you poor human. The woman was picking up the tools he’d use on her. A sharp pleasure shot through him as he imagined the tight rope across her neck, slowly tearing the fragile skin. He’d played with both men and women through the years, the excitement intoxicating as the victim struggled, aware of their imminent death. They’d always pleaded. In the beginning, they begged to be let go, but each one begged for an end to the pain. He’d always given it to them...but in his own time.

Footsteps approached and dragged his awareness back to the dark alley. He pulled his collar up against the chill then stuffed his hands back into his pockets, ready for the capture. His heart sped up like a racehorse on the final curve of the derby. He schooled his features. A bored expression was his greatest disguise.

Finally. He stepped forward, blocking the other person’s progress. Did you get everything I requested?

The woman stepped closer. Near enough he could see the faint smudge marring her lipstick. Yes, it’s all here. She reached out with her left hand and laid it over his shoulder. Isn’t it beautiful? Her breath caressed his cheek as she leaned in close.

His cock stirred at the thought of her panting under his knife. Yes. His own voice sounded breathless as he closed his eyes, allowing his imagination free rein.

Pain shot through his gut. He opened his eyes wide at the suddenness. As he looked down, his mind refused to process what he saw. Was it blood? Was that his intestines?

The pain intensified, and he raised his gaze toward the woman who had stepped away. Madness filled her gaze. He pushed on the wound, trying to stem the blood. The squishy wetness slid through his fingers and down his slacks.

A girl never forgets her first death. Too bad you’re not it. A maniacal laugh cut through the alley.

Questions slid through his mind like molasses on a cold winter night. He tried to say more. His mouth moved like a carp in a pond when the kids tossed corn in. Then darkness claimed him.

    ***

What was it about Sunday nights and dead bodies? You’d think people’d have something better to do than murder on God’s day.

Detective Jonah Pigg parked his sedan outside the alley then climbed out and stood looking up at the light rain. Spring had come to Ohio, where the weather changed moment to moment from warm sun to light snow. Jonah was glad today’s sprinkle hadn’t materialized into the downpour the forecasters had predicted. He settled a ball cap on his head then tugged his raincoat closer around his body. Stepping into the busy alley, he saw the coroner was already bagging the body.

Hey, Frank. What a beautiful day, Jonah teased the man who’d been a friend since Jonah’s first day on the force. Frank had been a mentor and sounding board even though the two men weren’t in the same department. Jonah noted how tired his friend looked. The early morning call must
