About this ebook
CONTINUE THE JOURNEY IN EPISODE ELEVEN
Autumn Parish never wanted to be a hero. But as she treks across the desolate Midwest years after the collapse of society, a hero is exactly what she's become: a SHEPHERD, weaving magic from words and guiding people between this life and the next.
Summer Norwood rules a wild outpost on the outskirts of what used to be Phoenix, but her grasp on power is fragile. As the SHERIFF, she has a massive target on her back. With evil brewing, she vows not to go down without a fight.
In their childhoods, both were students at the Whitmore School for Girls in Appalachia, an elite and intensely secretive SCHOOL where young women were taught how to conquer the world. Those who attended became part of the Sisterhood, a network spanning the globe, their influence and power unparalleled.
Desire drew Autumn and Summer together from different worlds, taking them from enemies to lovers at Whitmore. But betrayal ultimately tore them apart. Twenty-five years later, when Autumn receives a magical summons drawing her west, she never expected to be reunited with the woman who betrayed her all those years before. But when Autumn realizes that other members of their Sisterhood are in danger, she may have to put their past where it belongs, teaming up with Summer to save them all.

THE SHERIFF
SUMMER BLINKS AWAKE into an early morning pre-dawn pall, an absence of true light, though it threatens from a horizon somewhere on the edge of the city. Her body is loose from the night’s sexual activities, sore in places that bring a lazy smile to her lips.
It had been enjoyable. It always is. A release, a distraction. Safety in the familiar. But solitude is another beloved ritual to Summer, and an intensely important one at that.
Fucking is one thing, intimacy is another. And Summer isn’t exactly the intimate type.
Over long years—decades, even—Summer has trained her body to wake at the drop of a pin; her previously heavy sleep, a hard habit to break. But this morning, she feels thirteen again. Slow to wake, delighting and luxuriating in the slowness of her movements.
Until she smells it. Then she is wide awake and alert.
The sensation itself is difficult to classify, but it starts as a smell and then spreads through her senses, one by one, until her entire being is inundated by it. She is forced to squeeze her eyes shut at the tang of it, the thick burn of electricity in the back of her throat. It’s a sharp sting in her nostrils that makes her ears ring, a dizziness that overcomes her for a split second that feels much, much longer. Her skin tingles, twitches, burns.
Then all of that subsides.
And after a moment, all that remains is a smell that has given Summer many a sleepless night: a chemical smell, like something dead or dying. Resinous and pungent, electric and dangerous. Man-made, but not. From the earth, but not. Something altogether contradictory and
