Author’s Note
A close friend of mine will wake up on any given day and either call or text me about some wild dream she had. It’s some of the most entertaining stuff I’ve ever heard in my life, and after one of her recent dreams, I jokingly said, Girl, I’m about to make this into a story. Nobody ain’t gon’ believe the stuff that floats around in your head.
We went back and forth laughing about what to call it and which dreams to use and somehow I actually decided to write it. These shorts are based on scenes from her dreams. I extended them and gave more life to each so you could experience some of the laughter and craziness I do with her.
While I never expected I’d write a short story compilation, I really never thought I’d do it based on someone’s dreams. Here’s the life of thick girls around the world; confident, sassy and all about having the things that they enjoy in life around them. We are them and they are us. Embrace your inner thick goddess vibes.
Prologue
During the hours when the sun is in the sky, she takes care of her duties, working her nine to five at the stadium selling merchandise, or spending time with her parents and grandparents whom she lives with, or talking to the few friends she has if they aren’t busy. It’s her daily ritual.
It becomes something she falls into but hopes one day she will be able to change. Since she doesn’t see that day coming any time soon, she fantasizes about what her life could be.
During her breaks and lunch hours, she wanders around, taking long walks and giving her mind space to wonder what she could go to school for, who she could have met over the years, and which positions she could have held if things were different.
It begins to happen so often that the days bleed into months and the months bleed into years. The only time she feels like she is living is when she dreams.
The problem is those dreams only make her hungry for more. After several years of her daily ritual, she decides to do something different. With Christmas just days away, she chooses to ask for one thing.
If there is a Santa … if he really does exist, can he bring my dreams to life? Can he allow me to live as one of the beautiful women in my mind?
She repeats this every night during the days leading up to Christmas expecting it will never be answered, but little does she know Santa plans to give her the greatest gift of all.
The woman looks around the room and everything is frozen in suspended animation. She is confused and when she moves around the space, she discovers she can’t go beyond the exit.
Hello?
She calls out.
At the moment, no one is here,
A voice bellows from behind her. She whips around to find an empty void. You can’t see me. I’m in your mind. You called out to me every night this week. I came to grant your wish.
The woman is even more confused. She continues searching for the voice.
For a person so convinced I didn’t exist, you could at least give me the benefit of the doubt and realize you’re either a little out of it or dreaming.
I’m loonier than a toon,
The woman says.
She feels a smile engulf her in warmth. No, but I’m here to help you realize something about yourself, so get ready for four dreams that will reiterate something you should already know, my child.
This can’t be real. This isn’t real. I’m-
Dreaming? Yes, my child, and I’m here on this night of gift-giving to help you recognize something about yourself. Just remember as you step into these roles, that you can be any of these women. You just have to find one thing within yourself.
One thing within myself?
Yes. After each of the dreams, I will visit you and at the end, I’ll see what you’ve learned and if you’ve figured it out. Are you ready?
No,
The woman panics.
She feels the warmth of the smile spread around her again.
It’ll be okay. Think of these dreams as living movies. You are the center of attention, but everything will play out as it should. Do remember it is a dream. Things may be odd. Sit back and relax. They’ll happen fairly quickly.
The room bursts into action and the woman no longer has control of her body. She is a voyeur inside of someone else, who begins to move of their own volition.

Second Chance, Maybe
You ready for tomorrow?
Mama walked into the kitchen as I finished setting the table.
Born ready, Mama. You made me this way.
She kissed me on my cheek, then swatted my butt.
You better believe it.
I looked at her in disbelief, but she keeps on talking. This place looks great by the way. I’m sure the new owner will love it.
He better. I spent the better part of September and October speaking to his agent and one of his realtors getting the details down to the T so the final product would be to his specifications and to find everything I needed in November to put this place together for his arrival.
Do you know who this guy is?
Mama asked.
She assisted me in my interior design and decorating business. She did a lot of the ordering and bookkeeping, while I spoke to the clients. On occasion, she assisted in placement when I was decorating a location.
I dealt with a lot of high-end clients, so I
