About this ebook
At the base of a giant crackled-bloodwood tree, fifteen-year-old Aarkin holds vigil for an animal companion.
Like many before him—those in Calinn who worship Iustyn, the God of Pacts—Aarkin has found a place of perfect solitude deep within his home forest. A Circle of his own, where he waits with bated breath for a Companion—a bird? a forest cat? something else?—to seek him out, to close the Circle by joining Aarkin, spirit to spirit.
But instead of a forest creature, on the tenth day a bedraggled dog finds Aarkin instead. One who won't speak to him, but whose scars and sad eyes tell tales all the same.
Of wrongs perpetrated somewhere in this very forest.
Wrongs that need righting.
And suddenly, the Circle becomes a Path.

About the Author
A Circle of Intentions
Though Aarkin had heard of times of Preparation that had lasted a full ten-day week, he’d never thought that he’d be one to endure it. He’d always been a social creature who sought out others—the isolation may be worse than the hunger.
The hunger had lowered itself, had become a distant foe. The first few days in the Circle had been the worst—Aarkin had trained with his mentor, listened carefully as she described the ways to find his own Circle in the wilderness. It must be far enough away from the clan houses to ensure that no stray hunter would accidentally break his stay, lest he be forced to start again. Yet close enough to his people that the chances of a true monster coming from the Deep Heart Forest was slim.
Slim, but not impossible. Even with others secreted away, watching for such threats. Everyone knew of a child just past their fifteenth sun who went to their Circle and never again returned.
Aarkin didn’t plan on being one of them, but then, he suspected few did.
He’d spent longer than the required half-week looking for his Circle. It was at the base of a giant crackled-bloodwood tree. The first time he saw it, Aarkin felt as if he’d come home. The trunk was wide enough that four men together would struggle to meet fingertips around it, and it stretched high enough into the sky that it pierced clouds. The broad spear-like branches provided welcome shelter from the sun—important because Aarkin had to make sure his water lasted.
One brought no food with them, and only as much water as they could carry
