    Chapter 1

Skye stepped into the room and sighed. Clearly his new roommate had beaten him to the dorm, and was in the middle of unpacking, though he was nowhere to be seen. Books, clothes, and other debris littered the bed on the left side of the room, the desk, and most of the floor.

As he moved carefully across the room to the unclaimed bed, he glanced around at the strewn possessions. The clothing ranged from t-shirts and jeans to clubwear, the books were mostly fantasy, and as for the DVDs… Leaning over he picked one up and stared at it. The cover showed two big breasted women making out in skimpy clothes. Rolling his eyes at the blatant porn, he set it back down and set about unpacking his duffle bag, backpack, and laptop bag.

Working systematically, he first carefully folded and placed his clothing in the small dresser and spread his grandmother's handmade quilt out on the bed, then moved to the desk. School books on the shelf, laptop front and center by the chair, his tablet next to the laptop, and his cell phone on the corner closest to the bed. All that was left now was his toiletry bag.

The bathroom was a small private affair nestled between the two tiny wardrobes. A basic glass enclosed shower, a sink, and the toilet took up most of the space. He placed his toothbrush, toothpaste and hairbrush on the right side of the tiny counter and placed his skin creams into the medicine cabinet. Then he found places for his shampoo and shower gel in the shower stall.

Now that he was all done unpacking, he settled down to check his email. He deleted several spam messages, replied to two from close friends, and one from his parents. By this time, it was almost six o'clock, and his mysterious roommate still had not returned. A quick examination showed that the shared mini fridge was empty save some dubious looking milk, so he grabbed his coat and shoes and left to search for a nearby coffee shop or diner.

He walked slowly, taking the time to enjoy the feel of the school. The campus was well kept, with several well-groomed mini gardens, each with a central topiary showing the school's mascot, a griffin. Statues were placed near the gardens, and benches lined the tree-shaded walks. Pausing to smell an especially pretty rose bush, he noticed a faint aroma on the wind of freshly baked bread, and he followed his nose to a nearly empty bakery on the edge of the campus.

Hello, I haven't seen you around here before. New to town? The perky blond server chimed the moment Skye crossed the threshold.

Yeah, just starting class on Monday. What's your house special? His stomach rumbled audibly as he spoke, and she laughed.

We make several kinds of sandwiches. She gestured towards a blackboard behind her with an amicable grin tugging at her lips.

He examined the small blackboard with that day's specials on it. I'll take a club sandwich.

Excellent choice, though I prefer the turkey breast myself. I'm Elise, by the way.

My name's Skylar, but I prefer Skye.

Skye. That's a pretty name. Do you have a girlfriend? The question was dropped casually, though he could tell by the way she was glancing at him how it was intended.

No, no girlfriend, I don't lean that way. He was nervous for a heartbeat as he said that he liked talking to Elise and hoped she would not be offended that he was gay. But a moment later he realized that he had nothing to worry about as she almost dropped the bottle of mayo in embarrassment.

Oh, my Goddess… I'm sorry, it's just you're so cute and… I should have known. I have enough gay friends, and brothers, that one would think I could tell by looking but clearly my gay-dar is malfunctioning today… She broke off and finished wrapping up the sandwich.

It's cool, you're not the first to ask, and you won't be the last. I could help you find a cute guy, if you want. He ran his debit card through the machine as he spoke.

I have to close up in half an hour, but if you'd care to hang around, I can show you a good spot I've found for guy-watching. The bells above the door tinkled then, and a father came in with his two-year-old daughter, who ran up to the counter and asked for a cupcake.

Chocolate like last week, Lizzy, or do you want vanilla this time? Elise smiled as she waited patiently for the order.

Dat won! She pointed at a vanilla cupcake with a princess tiara sugar decal. Laughing, Elise retrieved the requested cupcake and let the girl munch while her dad ordered various breads and buns.

There was a row of tables under the front windows, so Skye settled into a chair at the closest one and took a bite of his sandwich. He almost moaned
