    CHAPTER I

    The 13th anniversary

It is said that humans are all different and therefore each one has something unique and magical inside, but that was especially true for Maia Gaia.

Maia Gaia, a girl physically like so many others. Her eyes and long brown hair stood out in no way different from those of so many girls her age. However, inside she resided something different and very, very special that made her unique.

The world, as she knew it, did not delight her. And so, she traveled a lot with her fertile imagination to fantastic places.

Since she was little, Maia Gaia was a sweet, sensitive and very, very observant child. Her small eyes looked like binocular lenses and with them she observed everything that happened around her in a timid way. Deep in her heart, there was a reason for so much attention. She wanted to find what she was looking for: Magic!

Despite being almost 13 years old, Maia Gaia continued to believe that magic really existed.

And that was rare or better very rare. But what she did notimagine was that it would be Magic to come to her.

Maia Gaia had been lying in her bed for hours. Maybe because the day of her birthday would be the next day, she could not sleep. She loved to celebrate her birthday. It would be her 13th birthday, but for some reason she was more excited than usual. Maybe because it was Friday the 13th and, unlike most people, she liked Fridays the 13th.

Despite being summer, the night had a mysterious fog, which worried Maia Gaia. She liked that her birthday was always sunny and very hot. For her to celebrate her birthday in her favorite season was spectacular.

    - Oh, come on. I must sleep. Tomorrow I must get up early.

Maia Gaia was talking to herself or maybe to the sleep if that is possible. She wanted this one to come so she could sleep and get up early to enjoy the day. She was with her thoughts when, unexpectedly, she saw one multicolored light enter

her room. She could clearly see the yellow, green, red, blue, and orange colors projected on her bedroom wall. A true night rainbows.

    - What is this? - She wondered.

She jumped, quickly, from the bed to have a look to see what was going on. While she was placing her feet on the ground she noticed, out of the corner of her eye, that the alarm clock indicated 00: 00h. It was already her birthday, as the time had flown by. But her curiosity was so great that, as soon as she set feet on the ground, she went immediately to her bedroom window.

    - Oh! - She said surprised.

As soon as she looked in, Maia Gaia stood motionless and breathless, as if time had stopped. She was watching something truly fantastic. Her eyes looked like a camera lens focusing, as best as possible, to get the best image. She could not believe what she was really seeing. In front of her eyes, the message hung in the air:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY

    MAIA GAIA

    13 YEARS OLD

Maia Gaia just shivered in her body and tears came to her eyes. This was, without a doubt, a magical moment. The excitement had given way to the dazzle.

It did not take long for her curiosity to manifest and call for action. Although she was afraid that everything would disappear when she reached her garden, she decided to move forward. Maia Gaia hurriedly put on her shoes and prepared to leave the room.

Approaching the door, she slowly turned the handle, trying to make as little noise as possible. Outside, she tiptoed down the stairs and opened the backyard door with great expectation.

When she looked up, she realized that, after all, the fog has just surrounded her house. Fortunately, everything remained unchanged and Maia Gaia heaved a sigh of relief. Well... everything remained almost unchanged because Maia Gaia could see the message coming down as if it were coming to her.

Amazed, she noticed that the words "Happy shone in red, Birthday in yellow, Maia Gaia in green, 13 in orange and, finally, years old" in blue. It was a real light show.

To her great amazement, the message lights came from small fireflies. These, now close to Maia Gaia, undid the original message and created a fantastic luminous cake with candles and everything. Her emotion and happiness were immense.

At that moment, Maia Gaia's mother, Igraine, arrived, hugging her without saying a word. The two sat on the grass and were silently contemplating what was happening.

Shortly afterwards, the fireflies, approaching Maia Gaia, made a rotating aerial circle around her head for approximately one minute and departed through the fog.

After everyone left, Igraine said to Maia Gaia:

    - Happy Birthday, my flower. Come on, it's time to go to bed.

Slowly and as if hypnotized, Maia Gaia went up quietly to her room, but without the strength to talk or to ask anything to her mother. Igraine, helped Maia Gaia get into the bed and covered her up. Turning off the light and giving her a kiss on the cheek, she said:

    - Good night, Princess.

At that moment, Maia Gaia also turned off and fell asleep peacefully and deeply. Until she woke up scared of a terrible nightmare in the morning. After realizing that she had been dreaming, she decided to stay in bed for a while to calm down and to remember the pleasant parts of the dream. Yes, because although it was a nightmare in the end, its beginning had started wonderfully. It was unbelievable how that dream had felt so real.

She decided to take her diary out of the drawer of the nightstand and began to write down everything she remembered. For Maia Gaia, her diary was her greatest confidant and guardian of her secrets. However, she was very demanding, only writing what she considered to be truly important. Perhaps because of it, few pages were yet written.

    - Forest, baby eagle, Athena, water, sea animals, dark, help me, Maia Gaia, help me.

Maia Gaia went over the main words in her head and then wrote them in detail in her diary. She remembered that she was in a forest. The trees and flowers were different from what she was used to see. Their colors were more luminous. She had a baby owl with her that she called Athena

The two strolled through the woods until they came to a very clean and transparent river.

Then Maia Gaia would kneel and start playing with the water. When she raised her hand, the river water also rose and when she lowered and rotated her hand, she made a hole and a swirl. After a short time, the pranks were much more original. Maia Gaia created, like soap bubbles, the aquatic animals she loved: dolphins, whales, seahorses, penguins, turtles, among others. In the end, dozens of sea animals floated in the air.

Suddenly, without predicting anything, Athena disappeared and Maia Gaia, desperate, called for it:

    - Athena, Athena. Where are you?

Despite her best efforts, she could not find it. And with each step forward, the forest grew increasingly dark, cold, and somber. Farther and farther, she heard:

    - Help me, Maia Gaia! Help me.

It had, in fact, been a terrifying sensation.

After having finished pointing everything out in her diary, Maia Gaia got up from her bed, looked at the sky and saw a radiant sun. Her heart was peaceful and happy. She could wear the new blouse and shorts she had bought to her birthday. Maia Gaia, despite being a girl, did not like dresses. She liked being able to walk around at ease, and for her dresses were a major nuisance. Putting on some ballerinas on party days was already lucky because, in fact, sneakers were also what she liked to put on. She was a practical girl, without much ceremony. Now that she was dressed, she was ready for her day.

As soon as she got to the kitchen, her mother, her sister Alice, and her uncle Daniel started to sing to her:

    - Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Maia Gaia, happy birthday to you.

Maia Gaia lived only with her mother and sister. The uncle was there visiting. Maia Gaia's father had abandoned the family when she was 3 years old and when her mother was pregnant with her sister. Despite everything, she had already forgiven her father and had expressed to her mother, several times, the desire to know him. However, her mother had always objected and Maia Gaia, realizing that this request hurt her mother very much, stopped doing it.

Communicating was not her strong point. Her shyness made her a girl of few words. Besides, she did not want to disturb her mother, who was always working. She did not talk much to her sister either, since she was always busy with very important things.

Her sister was clearly different. Alice was an extremely chatty, loud, and social girl. She loved make-up, hairdos, and all kinds of jewelry. She talked all day and it was all extremely important to her.. Being at home or being silent for her was a nightmare. Her room always had loud music playing.

Maia Gaia strove to pay attention to her sister, but as her conversations did not interest her much, as soon as she could, she moved away and closed herself in her refuge: her bedroom. But, always trying to see the positive side of everything, Maia Gaia thought to herself that she was still very lucky for her family. How many children were there with no family? And here they were today, all gathered to congratulate her.

    - Good morning, uncle. Around here so early?

    - Good morning, Maia Gaia. Happy birthday. It looks like you need a driver.

    - Oh yes? Who?

    - You and your mother.

    - Me and mom? Where are we going? I'm ready!

Every year there was a tradition for the three of them, on their birthday, to go for a walk to a very special place where the one having birthday would have never been before. Everything was always prepared by her mother in secret, so that when the day came, it would be an unexpected and extraordinary gift. Of course, her mother, during the year, was trying to understand the tastes of each one so that the day corresponded to their high expectations.

    - I am sorry, darling, but you are not ready yet. - Her mother said.

    - No?! How come? – She asked with a surprised look.

    - You must go packing everything you need for four days because we are going to travel. Uncle Daniel is taking us to the airport.

Maia Gaia's eyes widening and jumping with joy asked:

    - Seriously? Really?

    - It really is. And we must hurry up because the check-in is due within 3 hours.

    - Thank you, thank you. I will go now. I will go now.

She shot out of the kitchen towards the bedroom, but as she went up the stairs saying yes, yes she heard her mother saying:

-Maia Gaia, you have not had breakfast yet!

    - It does not matter. It does not matter. I eat at the airport.

Although Maia Gaia was a homely girl, she loved to explore new places. The excitement had been so great that she had not even asked what the destination was. In less than half an hour, she was ready.

    - Well, I am glad I packed my bag yesterday. Otherwise, I did not even have time to eat breakfast. How quickly Maia Gaia! - Manifested her mother smilingly.

    - Your suitcase is here. So, what about Alice's?

    - This time, she will not go. I've already arranged with the uncles and Alice will spend these days with them and cousin Ana.
