Roya’s story

My name is Roya and I teach baby sign language.

After teaching English as a foreign language to children and adults in several European countries for more than a decade, my life changed when my baby arrived. My son was born in the Netherlands where we had already been living for a couple of years. I took a short break from teaching English and as I got to know my baby boy, I rediscovered something I had enjoyed learning as a child: sign language.

Communicating with my little boy using signs was a great joy and made a wonderful foundation for his multilingual life. My husband is Italian, so we speak Italian and English at home, while Dutch is the community language. Together we witnessed how signing gave our son confidence as he started out learning how to navigate the linguistic waters of an international upbringing. We saw how signing provided a bridge between the three languages that he is learning. 

In 2017 our daughter was born and as our baby girl grows up, signing has come into focus for our family once again. It's fun to watch my son teach his little sister and amazing to see how responsive she is at such a young age. We can't wait to see how she will communicate with us using sign language.

After helping many parents connect with their babies at local workshops, I am eager to make the benefits of baby sign language available to as many families as possible.
