    CHAPTER ONE

JANESKA ROLLED HER EYES. Are you kidding me?

Soma turned and smiled; her purple iris’ bright. No, find a house to stop at. I need a shower.

Soma, we are thirty minutes from base. Janeska brought the lever toward her, slowing their watercraft down.

I don’t care, damn it. I have Selma guts all over me.

Well, you should have thought about that before engaging him in an all-out fight. You knew he would play dirty.

Yeah, sure, just look for an empty houseboat and dock, I’ll only be a moment.

What is with you lately? All you want to do is fight. Mella said, no combat if necessary, and you went looking for it. You waited until he appeared and didn’t try to hide or get out of there until after you kicked his ass.

I know, all right! I’m going through something. Just back off. Over there, no transport vehicles.

By the Gods! Decreasing the engine speed more, Janeska lowered her goggles to search the houseboat and land connection near it. All right, I think this one is empty. I’m not reading any life signs. Janeska slid the craft alongside the pier, shut the engine off and drifted in. Don’t be long, and don’t leave a mess. Shoving the goggles back on top of her head, she leaned back against the railing.

    Yeah, yeah.

She shook her head, eyes on Soma as she shimmied up the rafters to the home and inside an open window. The houseboats on this side of Azeroth were more mansions than what one would think of as houseboat. Hell, even their own base of operations was large. It had to accommodate them and all their gear while on the planet. The good thing about Azeroth, the planet was ninety percent water mass and ten percent land mass, which she loved. Janeska breathed in and closed her eyes, goosebumps appearing on her arms as the salt air streamed through her senses. Azeroth, was within the Cardonian Solar System, a planet of the Systems Collective and an ally in the Galactic Federation, to whom she and her team answered to. Water showers were not forbidden on Azeroth as on drier planets. So, when water showers could be had, they were. Sighing, she hit her earpiece. How much longer?

    Almost done.

She opened her eyes, the euphoric feeling gone. Fine, but hurry it up. My gut’s turning.

    You’re always nervous about something.

Only when you make me do stupid shit like this. You do realize we’re breaking the law now, right?

I’m taking a freaking shower; how could that be bad?

You broke into someone’s house to do it. They’re not a target. If we get caught, we’ll be held to a higher standard, you know that.

By the Gods, and I thought Mella was the mother hen.

I’m not mother-henning, damn it. I just don’t like being on the wrong side of the law! Janeska narrowed her eyes as she stared at the rippling current. Leaning over, she dipped her hand in the pure liquid. It always calmed her. She loved being a Vesi, an aquatic shifter and the connection she had with water. It didn’t matter what planet they were on, if there was water on it, she could connect, shift and control it. Unfortunately, she also had to follow the planet’s moon cycle.

Janeska’s gaze whipped to the land connection, the whirls of a land cruiser approaching. Straightening up, she peered over the top of the canopy attached to the far end of the pier and hit the button on the side of her ear transmitter. Yeah, well you better move your ass. You have company. Land cruiser. Lowering her goggles, she zeroed in on the vehicle. I mean it, Soma. Get the hell out. This is not a regular houseboat and its occupants are home.

    I’m coming.

The sound of a female scream had several males running from the land cruiser. Where are you?

    Going to… I think it’s a study…
