Take Me With You - Gillian Richardson

    Chapter 1

    Take me with you!

Humm pulled his beak from the orange honeysuckle blossom. Where had that tiny voice come from? He hovered, listening. He had returned to his nectar breakfast when he heard it again.

    Take me with you!

The voice came from below. Humm backed up, and scanned the ground. Who’s there? He had to be careful. Was this a trick to ambush him? A hummingbird had plenty of enemies.

Nothing, the voice said. I’m Nothing. I need help. Take me with you... please?

At last Humm saw a small brown face with pointed nose. Bright black eyes peered up at him. Huge oval ears showed pink linings. A mouse! Humm knew they lived in the woods. He’d never seen one as tiny, though. How could something that small harm him? Still, best to play it safe. He had to be smart if he was going to survive his first solo journey south.

What’s wrong? Humm asked, hovering out of reach.

I can’t stay here, said the mouse. They’re after me.

Humm looked around. He saw only a black and yellow striped butterfly flit-hopping from bloom to bloom. Who is after you?

The gang. I’m running out of places to hide. Tremors shook the mouse from its whiskers all the way to its tail. Its eyes never stopped darting from side to side.

Where’s your home? Your family? Humm knew some forest animals lived together all year. Not his family. They had gone their separate ways once he and his sister could feed themselves.

The mouse took a deep breath. All gone now. The gang took them all after a rainstorm swamped our tunnels. I was only able to hide ‘cause .... The mouse gave a loud sniff. Well...look at me. I’m Nothing. That’s my name.

Your name? Humm backed up in surprise. What a hurtful name to give someone just because he was small! Why, his sister Fleur had been tinier than Humm at birth. It didn’t matter. They all loved her.

It’s my nickname, really. Everyone teased me because I was the youngest, and the smallest.

What’s your real name, Humm asked.

Can’t remember. Nothing sat up and peered around. So, can you help me?

    But who is after you?

Cats. Gone wild. They have no homes any more either. Nothing twitched his nose, and shuffled his
