    Introduction

No one will ever love you as unconditionally as your dog ~ Anonymous

Having a dog is one of life’s greatest gifts and teachers! Having a dog teaches you to be caring, unselfish, responsible, and how to plan.

If you already have a dog or have decided to get one, it’s important to understand that all dogs are different. They come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors, and they all have their own personalities, just like humans. One big difference between dogs and humans is that dogs never become independent, which means you are going to have to look after it for its whole life. Now this may sound easy, but remember the average dog lives between twelve to fifteen years. Some live even longer than that. So it is a very big responsibility, and you will need to provide your dog with:

    Food

    Shelter

    Exercise

    Mental Stimulation

    Socialization

    Training

    Medical care

    Grooming

    And you will have to:

    Clean up after them

Keep their eyes and teeth healthy

    Keep their nails short

Keep their ears clean and dry

    Teach them manners

Remember that they always need to have someone to look after them when you visit friends, go away for holidays, have a sleepover, or travel.

So, if you think you are ready for a true best friend for life, then it’s time to get started.

But before we dive into the fun stuff, as with everything there are a few rules… Now we all know rules are never fun, but they are important to make sure everyone is safe, especially when working with dogs. So let's take a look.

Chapter 1: Important Rules When Working With Dogs

Dogs are very clever creatures, and because they are so clever, they can have a mind of their own! This means that they don’t always listen or understand what we want them to do. We can help them understand by teaching them certain words and phrases, but over time, they have taught us a few things as well. We know that all dogs are different, but there are certain things that are the same for all dogs, no matter their shape or size. We have turned these into rules to make sure we stay safe and that your dog stays safe and happy.

    The Rules

Let’s break it down and understand why these are the rules:

Be calm around dogs. Working with a furry friend is very exciting, but jumping, running, screaming, shouting, poking or prodding, pulling ears and clapping dogs on the back can make them very uncomfortable and unhappy. It can also make them too excited. Dogs don’t always know how big and strong they are, so they might jump, bite, scratch, or run into you by accident. Stray cool and calm!

Leave sleeping/eating dogs alone. We have to respect dogs when they are asleep and accept that they might not want to play when we want to; for example when they are eating, we need to leave them to finish. If they are bothered when they are sleeping or eating, they might become uncomfortable and snap.

Always be gentle. Whenever you touch
