Chapter One
Consider The Canine
The dog, that wonderful canine companion of man with all of its diversity in size, temperament and breed has been with us since time immemorial. It may pay us to consider some of this marvellous animals origins and breeding when we invite them to become a part of ours and our families lives.
All dogs are canines regardless of their size, appearance or temperament. They are all descended from a single ancestor, the Wolf. From this beautiful animal they retain an important number of its canine characteristics and needs.
Of course like all creatures each dog is an individual with its own individual strengths and weaknesses, but despite this, dogs retain many canine characteristics.
All canines are pack animals, and within the pack there is a specific set of rankings.
The head or Leader of the pack is the Alpha Male, and the second in rank in the pack is the Alpha Female. Below these two leaders are the other members of the pack who either decide between them upon their own ranking, or their ranks are designated by the leaders.
The pack also has its requirements of its leaders. The packs leaders must be resourceful, and guide and sustain the packs needs. Important is the ability of the leaders to provide the pack with food and defend the pack and its young.
Leaders are expected to be calm, authoritative and resourceful or the pack will lose respect for them, and it will cause stress in the pack.
If the leaders are not respected this stress can be exhibited in several ways, and in some extreme cases there can even be physical challenges to the leadership.
In the home these same stresses can occur, and they may display themselves in various ways. The dog may test its pack leaders. Testing can result in outright disobedience, refusing to release ownership of an object, and even snapping and biting over possessions.
It's important to recognise these testing behaviours at the onset, and to rectify them before they become a bigger problem.
Sometimes a dogs initial ‘testing’ can be as simple as reacting to a command they know well differently. e.g. The dog lies down when the ‘Sit’ command is given. The dog may return very slowly and/or by an indirect route when the ‘recall’ command is given.
These initial tests may seem trivial, but to the canine they are as blatant as asking you, ‘Are you still in charge?'
It’s advisable for the leader/owner to intervene during these early simple testing stages to reinforce the leadership role, and forestall any further, or more difficult displays of testing.
I will repeat the statement about a leader being expected to be calm.
