    CHAPTER 1

And then Justin said it wasn’t me. It was him. Tally Lane finished off the last of her pinot grigio in one long swallow and then returned the wine glass to the glossy bar top. I mean, who even says that?

Her best friend, Nica, quirked a brow. Well, for starters…assholes.

Tally glanced at her, one hand already raised to signal to the bartender for another round. You make an excellent point.

    I know.

And I’m pretty sure you might have kinda sorta mentioned he was an ass to begin with.

    I’m absolutely positive I did.

Tally frowned. Well, I’m absolutely positive you once said we should drown our sorrows so…I’m having another.

Nica’s dark brows knitted together. I don’t know, Tal. Should you? I can’t stay. You know I have that meeting… She trailed off, glancing at her phone for the time. She winced. Crap. I have to go. Please come with me?

Down at the other end of the bar, the bartender—a good-looking twenty-something-year-old—noticed Tally’s waving and nodded his head. Pinot Grigio Round Two was coming up.

She slumped back onto her bar stool and looked at Nica. Her best friend was extra stunning tonight in an Alexander McQueen suit. Her black hair hung loose around her shoulders and her sexy cat-eye glasses were halfway down her nose.

The better to glare at Tally.

Nica, she began, I would rather dig my eyes out with spoons than go to dinner with those advertising executives.

    That’s so gross.

That’s so my mood right now.

Nica glared at Tally. Tally glared right back. The advantage of being best friends since high school meant Nica knew exactly how Tally was feeling. Of course, the disadvantage was also that Nica knew exactly how Tally was feeling.

And that she probably shouldn’t be trusted to behave herself right now.

I promise to be good, Tally said, laying one hand over her heart and the plunging décolletage of her silk wrap dress. It was her favorite—good thing too because she was going to have to eat Ramen for a week after buying it—and it was supposed to be a in pile at the foot of Justin’s bed.

The whole thing only added insult to injury. Not only did he break up with her, but he did it on the night he’d gotten back from a month-long business trip. She was horny and frustrated and annoyed.

And hurt, she thought. Don’t forget hurt.

Of course, it wasn’t like she really could. The tightened fist around her heart reminded her with every breath.

I promise to be good, she repeated, nudging one of Nica’s gorgeous long legs with her foot. I’ll get a cab. I’ll go home and eat ice cream.

Or you could come watch me crush these tools. A mischievous glint entered Nica’s dark eyes. She might look like a pin-up girl, but she was also deadly good at her job. The client is going to be blown away.

Without a doubt, but Nic…I’m just not up for it.

Nica nibbled her lower lip, trying to decide. Fine, she said at last, hopping off the barstool and gathering her black Prada tote a little closer. But only one more glass and then you go home. Movies this weekend? Your place?

    God, yes.

They hugged hard and Nica dashed for the exit, one hand already reaching for her cell.

Tally almost felt sorry for the ad guys. They would be struck dumb by Nica’s gorgeousness and that was when she would move in for the kill.

Tally turned around just in time for the bartender to drop off another glass. Here you go, he said.

    Thanks.

She took a sip, gaze wandering around the nearly all-white minimalist hotel bar. It was pretty and glitzy and would’ve been perfect for welcoming Justin home.

Tears sprang to her eyes and Tally willed them away. She concentrated on people-watching instead and spotted a couple coming in from the lobby. They were smiling and gorgeous and put-together in a way that made Tally feel instantly twenty pound heavier and chumpy to boot.

The woman had short brown hair and killer curves and the guy? Well, the guy looked like he’d fallen out of a Ralph Lauren ad.

And he looked at the woman like she was his everything.

I want that, Tally thought, chest going tight. I want that so much.

You might want to chill on the staring. The bartender wandered closer and offered her a bowl of nuts. Rough night?

Tally cleared her throat, feeling heat climb her cheeks. Yeah.

He gave her a pitying look. Cheer up. It’ll get better. You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince.

    She paused. Thanks?

He nodded and moved on. Face still flaming, she stole one more glance at the couple, and this time, she caught the woman looking at her. And smiling.

She kissed her gorgeous guy’s cheek, slid off her barstool, and headed Tally’s way.

Oh, God, she thought, feeling her eyes bug. Are you about to chew me out for staring? Because I didn’t mean to stare.

I just want what you have.

    But wasn’t that pathetic?

The other woman hopped up onto the stool next to her and grinned. You look like you could use some real company.

Oh. No. Um…I mean, I wouldn’t want to be a third wheel.

It shouldn’t have been possible, but the other woman’s grin widened. I’m Lissa. She tilted her head in the gorgeous guy’s direction. That’s Adam.

Tally hesitated. Nice to meet you. I’m Tally.

I love that name. Lissa’s deep brown eyes warmed. I came over because I want to do you a favor.

Tally blinked. That was…unexpected. Was she being solicited for sex or something? She’d heard about this stuff happening in hotel bars, but she’d never actually experienced it. Um, I’m good.

Lissa’s generous mouth turned down in disappointment. You’re not though. I can tell. You’re ready to get past this, aren’t you? She gestured to the minimalist hotel bar around them. You’re ready to find your soulmate.

Well…yeah. Tally blinked again. Did she really just confess that?
