    CHAPTER 1

    ––––––––

Lissa Garcia believed in magic—not fairy magic, of course. As far as she was concerned if an older woman bopped you on the head with a glowing wand and you passed out, it didn’t matter if you woke up in a sparkling dress with Prince Charming standing by. That was some roofie shit right there.

She also didn’t believe in the kind of magic that pulled rabbits out of hats or found playing cards behind your ears—but that was probably thanks to a childhood spent with too many male cousins who were obsessed with Criss Angel.

Lissa believed in real magic, the inexplicable and creepy kind that didn’t become evident until you suddenly sat up, looked around your life, and realized every choice you’d made, every mistake you’d committed, every everything had led you here.

But even she knew a magical dating app was bullshit.

Marco, she said, putting down her coffee cup and studying her cousin closely. Do you hear yourself?

He winced, nodded. "I know it sounds nuts, but Lissa it works. I found love. Me!"

Now she winced. It hurts my heart when you make it sound like that was impossible.

    You know what I mean.

    She did. It’s just that—

"You know how much it hurts my heart when you say you’ll start dating after you lose weight? Marco leaned forward, brown eyes—almost identical to her own—filled with worry. You’re gorgeous just the way you are. It’s time for you to get back out there, but this time, you’ll have An Indecent Apposal to help you."

As much as I appreciate the compliment, I am not waiting to get ‘back out there’ because I want to lose weight first. I’ve just been spending time on myself, figuring out what I want.

    And now you have.

Lissa glared at him. Marco glared right back. Normally, this was where she would dig in and argue for the sake of arguing (or, in this case, for the sake of not having to sign up with a punnily-named dating app), but honestly...

Her cousin was right. Though she was only a couple years out of college, her career as a graphic designer was really taking off. She had her own place, her own friends. She’d learned how to embrace her curves rather than fighting them—which probably didn’t seem like a thing to most people, but Lissa was the only big girl in her family.

It wasn’t that she ate terribly (although, yeah, she’d just polished off her entire plate of French toast and no she didn’t feel bad about it anymore because it was okay to indulge every once in a while) and she did exercise, walking and biking through Piedmont Park. Her body was just bigger.

    And that was okay.

Everyone was different. She knew that. She just wished it hadn’t taken her until almost twenty-four to realize it.

Marco leveled her a flat gaze, his dark brown eyes serious. Honey, when you’re a gay man in Atlanta, it’s hard enough to find your soulmate. When you’re a gay man in Atlanta who stars in a magic show three times a week, it’s freaking impossible.

Maybe you should think about those advertisements you’re using. I told you, the images are lame. The designer probably drew them in Crayon.

    Stop changing the subject.

Stop refusing to let me help you. We’re not eight anymore. I can do more than dress up in frilly costumes and play magician’s assistant to you.

First of all? He held up one finger. I didn’t make you do that very frequently.

You’re right. You didn’t as soon as you realized our neighbor, Henry, looked better in my costume.

"Second of all, that’s very true, but you’re still changing the subject. I am a difficult match and An Indecent Apposal? It found Alan for me.
