Chapter 1: What is PMP?
While you have already been studying to become a PMP, it can be helpful to clearly understand what a PMP is and what the PMI is. The clearer of an understanding you have around these two elements, the easier it will be for you to successfully prepare yourself for the exam, as you will have an exact definition of what you are preparing yourself for.
What A PMP Is
A PMP is a project management professional. Project managers may be hired directly to a position within a company, or they may bid for contracts with different companies. When you are hired directly to a position within a company, you are an employee who fulfills the role of being a project management professional for that company.
When you bid for contracts, you must look to companies contracting out the project management position on their new projects. You then bid on the project, and if you win, you work on that specific project with that client. Rather than being an employee, then, you collaborate with that person as a self-employed contractor.
Project managers have a role that can be broken down into three specific sets of responsibilities. These first responsibilities includes planning, executing, and closing projects. You will be responsible for defining what the project is, building a comprehensive work plan for yourself and all of the other team members to fulfill, and managing the budget while keeping everyone on track with budgetary allowances.
The second responsibility includes managing teams, as you will be facilitating commitment and productivity, helping remove any obstacles the team may be facing, and motivating team members to stay on task.
The third responsibility is to manage expectations. You must align projects to business goals, manage the stakeholders and their involvement, and communicate the status of the project to everyone involved. Stakeholders will also want to know about the project status, the milestones, and unexpected difficulties that the team is facing, so they can be well aware of how things are going. The better you are with communicating these things and
