Introduction
The famed billionaire’s club—a dream aspired by most, and only realized by a few fortunate souls. Making a million dollars is hard, so reaching for that billion can be considered virtually impossible. I say virtually, for anyone who has set their eye on the target, and has the determination, will, and knowledge to make it happen, stands a chance of breaking the billion-dollar barrier.
When we talk about millionaires, they come and go. When it comes to making billions, the US has only seen 614 so far (Rogers, 2020) which can seem a staggeringly low number considering the population. What is even more concerning is the fact that out of these 614 names who have made their empires, only seven are black. That is barely north of one percent. This figure goes to show the growing wealth gap between black and white Americans, and it continues to increase every day.
Luckily, it takes just one to break the norm and allow others to make their way into the group. It is a similar story that is observed in literally all walks of life. There were times when anyone who wasn’t white was treated harshly and was given a much lower social status and severely underpaid, if paid at all. As time goes on, things are changing for the better, albeit at a snail's pace.
The disparity between white and black Americans is still glaringly obvious. Significantly, a white person has more chances of accumulating wealth than a black person. The good news comes in the fact that since seven of them already exist as a reminder that there is always a chance to add a few more to the list.
I am not suggesting, nor guaranteeing that you will become the next black billionaire, and that is not the purpose of the book. What I am trying to do is spread knowledge on how these seven people have gone on to shape the landscape of the renowned billionaire’s club.
This book will take you on an inspirational journey, one that looks into the deep and dark stories that are not widely discussed, but should be. To us, Oprah Winfrey seems to live a luxurious life, but there is a story behind her fame that you should know before passing judgment. It is through stories like this do we learn that self-made billionaires started out just like you and me. They went through so much in life, but unlike so many of us, they held onto their dreams, remained focused and true to their goals, and never gave up.
Through their stories, we learn how they continue to redefine black wealth and make more out of their billions. One would consider that having a billion dollars is enough to retire for life, but to them, that is never the case. They know how to make money using money, without compromising on their lifestyles, moral and ethical values, and by remaining true to their nature.
This book comprises stories of not just the seven black billionaires within the US, but it goes beyond the borders and explores the magnificent stories of other black billionaires from all around the world.
The first part will serve as a biography for each of these individuals. The rest will focus on the lessons we can learn from these larger-than-life personalities. I want to provide you with the tips, tricks, and strategies you would need to walk the path of these billionaires, if you so wish.
Who Should Read This?
This book provides valuable insight into the lives, struggles, achievements, and wealth-generating strategies of black billionaires. It may be wrong to imply that this book is specifically meant for the black community. With that said, it is written in a way that is inclined to highlight specific success achieved by members of this community, as will be evident through figures provided in the later chapters.
This is ideally meant for working professionals or anyone looking for direction in their career. The sooner you start on your journey to morph how you act, think, and manage your career, the more profound the results will be. It is never too late for those further in their career or life. There are a great many examples of those who have gone on to become billionaires within a decade; all it takes is proper knowledge and the courage to tread in unfamiliar territory.
The strategies, tips, lessons, and suggestions provided in this book are not just opinions. They are findings based on fact, and are not the only options available for you to pursue. Some of these may be profitable to you, but some may not work well with your options or lifestyle. I will ensure to highlight such aspects, and where possible, I will try to provide you with helpful alternatives.
A large part of this process relies on the fact that you are here to learn all you can about wealth, and how these public figures went on to earn theirs. Without interest, this knowledge may not provide the desired results. Many variables exist in life, and they will continue to pop-up and change, making it difficult to predict whether you will end up a success story. It is simply up to you to take control.
Everything within this book is achievable, and has been achieved by those before you. You may not end up a billionaire, but by following certain strategies, modifying these to your own needs, you may become your own success story. Making money is not the hard part, the real challenge lies ahead.
Before We Start...
This book, in no way, provides finance or investment advice. It only highlights the strategies that have been used by affluent black men and women to make their fortune. This means that some of the information you find here may not work for you.
I have helped many to learn fruitful ways to make a decent living, and this sometimes required investments and risk. In any case, however, I always ensure that others know these risks. For example, those who may be interested in following the same investment strategies as Oprah Winfrey, there will always be a significant chance of loss. She has hired professionals, and a team that assists her in these decisions. Do you? Be aware of your strengths and shortcomings.
Make it a rule to only invest your time, money, and energy into something that you can see, control, and modify. Do not trust websites or scam artists who claim to be able to double your money in ridiculously short periods. Lasting fortune takes time to build, therefore, you must adopt some of the strategies you come across and persevere.
Many of the biographies, quotes, facts, and figures have been retrieved from biography.com, a website that continues to update the records of thousands of politicians, billionaires, and others in the public eye. You can find out more about many other celebrities and influential figures there.
With that said, it is time to start exploring the world of the black billionaires, and what put them on the map.
Chapter 1: Black Billionaires - They Exist!
We start at the dawn of the 20th century in America. The word ‘billionaire’ wasn’t really used anywhere else in the world. While men and women continued to lead their lives in the fast-changing yet average world, there was one who continued to turn a profit. A philanthropist, and massively successful businessman went on to change the world by becoming the first billionaire. His name was John D. Rockefeller.
This happened in 1912, and if we are to truly understand how much a Rockefeller made in this time, it would roughly equate to $418 billion after inflation. That is a jaw-dropping figure.
What happened next took well over a century, creating 600 or
