    His to Defend

    He’s a shifter. She’s a human. Their attraction is…dangerous.

For everyone who has ever taken a chance on love—and those who will.

    Chapter One

It had been almost a year since Nina Renton had been to Grizzly Ridge for the first time. She’d been assigned to write a travel feature piece on a brand-new eco-lodge in the remote Montana mountains and, needing a little break from her own life, she’d dragged her best friend Harper along with her. A choice Nina might not make again. Especially because it meant that Harper would end up staying at the ridge after falling in love with the rugged man who ran it.

That wasn’t true, and Nina knew it. As much as she missed her best friend back in LA, she couldn’t be happier for her. Nina never would have guessed that Harper would trade in her slick lifestyle as a PR rep in the big city for a rugged life in the mountains, but that’s exactly what she’d done. And judging by the smile in her voice when she’d called to tell Nina she was getting married, Harper couldn’t be happier.

Nina navigated the SUV she’d rented through the mountain roads. Last time she’d arrived at the ridge, it had been by helicopter. But that had been before.

When she was still on the payroll of Lifestyle magazine.

It was pretty hard to afford a helicopter ride without that expense account to back her up anymore. It was going to be pretty hard to afford much of anything soon.

Nina swallowed hard and forced herself to focus on something else, like how great it was going to be to see her best friend.

Eventually a large wooden sign announcing Grizzly Ridge appeared in the thick trees and Nina’s stomach fluttered with excitement. Spending a few weeks with Harper would be exactly what she needed to figure out what she was going to do next. Besides, the fresh air would be good for her and maybe she’d get lucky and find a mountain man of her own to keep her warm at night.

The thought made her laugh. Even if there was a little part of her that didn’t immediately reject the idea of having a man in her bed, there was an even bigger part of her that did. With her own life falling apart, the last thing she needed was to throw a man into the mix.

    Then again…maybe a little satisfaction wouldn’t hurt…

Fortunately, or unfortunately, Nina didn’t have time to dwell on the idea because just as the idea was starting to take root, she rounded the corner, drove through a hand-carved wooden gate and into Grizzly Ridge. And just as it had the first time, it took her breath away.

Nina pulled up in front of the main large log building that she knew was referred to as the Den and put the car in park. She remembered the Den well. But there were so many other buildings than the last time.

She stood next to the car and took a deep breath, letting the fresh pine air fill her lungs before she spun in a slow circle, taking it all in.

    It’s pretty different, isn’t it?

Nina turned on her heel and shrieked. Harper!

Her friend ran toward her and they embraced in a hard hug that brought tears to Nina’s eyes. Oh my God, I missed you so much.

Harper laughed and pulled back. "I missed you, too. I’m so glad you’re here. I couldn’t imagine doing this without you."

Something tells me you wouldn’t have any trouble doing this without me. Nina tipped her head and gave her friend a look. Harper had always been a strong woman, but when she met Axel, she’d blossomed, as if Axel’s support and love had infused her with even more determination and passion.

Okay, Harper admitted. "But I certainly wouldn’t want to do it without you."

Now that I believe. Nina laughed and for the first time examined the changes in her friend. You look amazing. Harper had always been curvy, but her curves seemed more lush somehow, her hair shinier and longer, her skin glowed, and she looked fresh and…happy.

What can I say? Harper smiled broadly. Motherhood agrees with me. I can’t wait for you to meet Lily. She’s the sweetest thing.

Nina still couldn’t believe her friend was a mother. And she really couldn’t believe that Lily was already a few months old, and she hadn’t met her yet. Where is she? I can’t wait to cuddle her.

She’s with Ella in the kitchen.

    Ella?

She’s Kade’s mate. She’s from Argentina and so—

Mate? Nina stared at her friend but Harper only laughed again.

That’s just the word everyone around here uses. It’s a little more permanent than girlfriend, but not quite wife. She waved her hand, dismissing it. The Jackson brothers don’t really believe in marriage. It took a lot of talking to convince Axel it was important to me.

She didn’t give Nina a chance to respond before she took her hand and pulled her toward the Den. Come on. I’ll introduce you to everyone. There’s been so many changes since you’ve been here.

Not the least of which seemed to be that all the Jackson brothers had paired off and found mates. Nina couldn’t help but be a little disappointed about that. Not that she had designs on any of Axel’s brothers, but they were pretty sexy. And as much as she was pretty sure she didn’t want to get involved with anyone, the thought of a little fling might not be a terrible idea.

After all, she was due for a little fun.

It’s good to see you, man. Ryker Jackson raised his glass in a toast to his cousins who were all gathered around the bar at the local pub, the Station.

How long has it been? Axel, the oldest of the cousins, asked before he drank deeply. Three years? More?

At least three, Luke, his younger brother, agreed. It’s been at least that long since we left Jackson Valley and you were gone on some sort of shoot or something. Remember?

Ryker remembered it well. It was his first professional photo shoot. He’d been trying for years, submitting to travel sites and magazines in hopes that someone would hire him on for a full shoot. His dreams had come true that year when he was sent by Ice Climbers to document a mountain climbing expedition on Mount Washington. It had been exactly what he’d worked for and when the shoot was done, he was riding high and ready to return to the valley and tell his cousins and best friends about his success. Only, when he returned, they were gone.

Their grandfather, the patriarch of the valley, had kicked them all out—Axel, Luke, and the youngest brother, Kade—after they failed to stop their sister from running off with what she thought at the time was her fated mate. The brothers had made a choice not to stop Kira, a choice that had hit Kade, her twin, the hardest.

But it had been a blessing in disguise because after their grandfather kicked them out, the brothers had settled on the ridge and in doing so had created what had quickly become an eco-lodge destination in the mountains of Montana.

I do remember, Ryker said with a smirk. It’s funny how things work out, isn’t it?

Not that anything had worked out. Not as far as Ryker or their grandfather was concerned. Which was why he was there. The invitations had gone out for Axel and Harper’s wedding and although Gordon, their grandfather, never got one, Ryker had. He’d had no intention of actually going to the wedding. After all, it was a wedding. Shifters didn’t get married. It was a human tradition. And a ridiculous one at that. But worse, Axel might be marrying a half breed, but he was already mated. He was the alpha of his pack. It was unthinkable, and as far as Ryker, his grandfather, and their entire clan was concerned, it was unacceptable.

I’m glad you’re here, Ryker. Axel’s dark eyes, a mirror reflection of his own, stared at him, watching him. Ryker’s cousin wasn’t a stupid man; he knew exactly why Ryker was there.

Me too, Ryker said, ignoring his cousin’s unasked question.

Luke wasn’t quite so subtle. "Why are you here, cousin? I find it hard to believe Grandfather would have given you his blessing to attend something so…human."

Or maybe he didn’t give his permission, Kade chimed in. His cousin’s tone was still light-hearted, but Ryker was smart enough to know that there was an underlying seriousness. It was only a matter of time before they grilled him about his intentions. They were on guard, something Ryker respected.

Ryker shook his head and took a deep pull from his beer. Honestly?

Of course. Axel’s gaze hadn’t wavered.

I missed you guys. It wasn’t a lie. Not even a little bit. Ryker did miss his cousins. They were like brothers to him. Sometimes even more so than his own brother Liam, who at times could be a little too intense for his own good. And yes, you’re right, I don’t get the whole wedding thing. He looked at Axel. And I really don’t get the whole mated to a—

Don’t say it. Luke put a hand on his arm in warning.

A warning Ryker heeded. I just don’t get the whole mating thing at all, I guess.

Kade laughed. You’re not the only one, he said. It took me a long time to understand myself.

No, Luke said. It took you finding a mate of your own. Maybe that’s all you need. He turned to Ryker. You need to find your mate.

Ryker laughed. Hell no. Women are nothing but trouble. Mates especially.

I don’t know. Kade wiggled his eyebrows. I’m pretty fond of the fairer sex myself. Especially my little bespectacled bear.

Ryker tried not to react, but as much as he loved his cousins, he couldn’t deny that he struggled with the fact that they’d all mated with completely unsuitable mates. As Alpha grizzlies, they should be choosing strong, fierce grizzlies of their own to further the bloodline, to keep things pure.

He didn’t bother voicing his opinions. They weren’t anything the Jackson brothers hadn’t heard before. After all, those opinions came directly from their grandfather and was exactly why they’d lost their mother when they were young. She’d chosen to be with their father, who was dying, and had left the children with the Jackson clan, making them official Jacksons. It was a similar story for Ryker, Liam, and their sister Natalia. Only it wasn’t until their father died, and their mother, Kristine, came searching for her family, that their grandfather even knew about their existence.

It had been a major scandal in the Jackson clan, that their patriarch, Gordon had a bastard daughter, and she in turn had three young children. But when the dust settled, they all took the Jackson name, as was customary and they were accepted into the clan.

Wait until you taste her paella, Kade said, still talking about his mate. It’s a favorite of the guests. Obviously proud, Kade puffed up his chest and fortunately the talk shifted away from mates altogether, a fact Ryker was grateful for. Even Axel jumped back into the conversation. He’d been noticeably silent ever since Ryker almost stuck his foot in his mouth about his mate.

It wasn’t until Luke and Kade left to return to the ridge and Ryker was left alone with Axel as they cleared up the bill that Axel turned to him and said, You have a problem with my mate. It wasn’t a question, but Ryker didn’t bother denying it. He nodded once and Axel continued. Look, I’m not going to pretend that I’m okay with it, Axel said. Because I’m not. But I do understand it. Grandfather’s influence is strong. I get it. But I want you to know something. Not one of us planned on falling in love with the women we did. It was fated, and although it can’t really be explained unless it happens to you, I can say this…imagine the world’s strongest magnet. Now imagine you are a piece of metal. There is nothing you can do to break free from that pull.

Ryker nodded, although he didn’t really understand.

My mate is a half breed, Axel continued, his voice steely now, an underlying thread of a growl running through his words. It’s true. And I might understand your reluctance to be okay with that. But if you ever make her feel like she’s not good enough, or say one ill word toward her while you are a guest in my home, cousin or not, I will not hesitate to kill you. Are we clear?

Ryker nodded and finished his beer. He knew Axel’s threat was far from empty and he could respect it. Crystal.

Good. Axel broke into a broad grin and smacked his cousin on the back. Now let’s go so I can show you the ridge.

    Chapter Two

Nina had forgotten just how gorgeous it was in the mountains. And quiet. The silence washed over her and wrapped her up tight as she stepped out of the busy lodge and out onto the deck. She’d had a few glasses of wine while Harper introduced her to the other ladies, and although Nina took a liking to them almost at once, the wine was starting to make her a little fuzzy-headed, so she’d excused herself to the porch.

A huge wrap-around covered porch was the perfect place to relax and unwind, but if she wanted to see the blanket of stars she knew would be overhead, she was going to have to venture out a little farther into the yard.

Nina glanced behind her where, through the open windows, the sounds of laughter and friendship spilled out and smiled to herself. She missed Harper so much back in the city, but it made her heart happy to know she was surrounded by such good friends and people who loved her up at the ridge. She couldn’t help the pang of jealousy that poked at her, though. Or was it envy?

It had been a long time since Nina had felt that same kind of belonging and love with a group of people.

She shrugged it off, unwilling to let her mood be dampened by pesky emotions that were better off pushed down, and made her way down the huge log stairs. Instantly, the world above her was transformed into a glittering wonderland of stars and constellations. Nina tipped her head back and took it all in. She’d always loved the night sky and the possibilities it held.

What was out there? Who else was looking up at the very same stars?

She could get lost in their depths.

She walked far enough away that the lights of the Den wouldn’t affect her view and the trees were clear enough to afford her an open space and she laid down. Stargazing was a guilty pleasure she tried to reward herself with whenever she could. Which, sadly, wasn’t often enough. With her busy travel schedule, there wasn’t usually time to sneak away from the city lights to lay on the ground and stare at the sky. Even if she did have a minute without a deadline looming over her.

Nina sighed and closed her eyes for a moment before once again looking overhead.

    There were no deadlines now.

Not since she’d lost her temper at her editor and said things she shouldn’t have. Or maybe she should have. After all, it needed to be said that Amy Armstrong was an unreasonable, demanding psycho who worked her writers too hard and was never happy with the work they turned in, no matter how great it was. And Nina wasn’t the only one who thought so, either. All of the writers thought the same thing, only they never spoke up; they simply found a new job. And maybe Nina should have done that, too. But she had what she now knew to be a ridiculous loyalty to Lifestyle. They’d given her her first break, helped build her career, and given her the opportunity to travel the world and lead an amazing life. It had all been perfect. Until Amy Armstrong was promoted to her senior editor.

    Nina groaned out loud.

None of that mattered now. The only thing that really mattered was that she was out of a job and her savings account would only last her a few months. She was going to need to think of something and soon.

She shook her head in an effort to clear the negativity. All of that shit will be waiting for you when you get home. She didn’t make a habit of talking to herself, but desperate times and all that. Just enjoy your vacation.

    Yes.

That’s exactly what she was going to do. She was way overdue for a little fun and why not? She was on vacation. For the first time in as long as she could remember, she was completely unencumbered. Besides, cutting loose a little would be the perfect reset before she dove into whatever new life was waiting for her on the other side.

Satisfied with her resolve, Nina finally let herself relax fully into the view overhead and let her mind wander into exactly what type of fun she was ready to have while she was visiting the ridge.

It might have been the wine, or the fantasies that she allowed herself to get lost in, or a combination of both, but whatever it was, Nina was so consumed with herself that she didn’t hear the man approaching until he cleared his throat.

She shot to her feet. What the—

He probably shouldn’t have snuck up on her, but Ryker couldn’t help himself. The moment he’d set foot out of his truck, he’d scented her. Ignoring the fact that Axel had suggested that he meet him at the main doors of the Den because they’d driven separately, Ryker left the truck and tracked the scent.

Human. Definitely human. But one that smelled of honey and apples and…just the slightest hint of a crisp wine.

It hadn’t taken him long to find the source of the delicious scent that had even in a short time wound its way through his veins. She was just as delicious as her scent and his body reacted immediately.

Dark and with curves in all the right places wearing jeans and a tight top that strained to contain her full breasts, the woman who laid on the forest floor before him was the most beautiful creature Ryker had ever seen and his bear roared within him.

Instantly, he was annoyed with first himself, and then the woman for being in the woods in the middle of the night alone, and…drunk? Either way, it wasn’t safe.

For either of them, judging by the reaction in his groin.

From where he stood, he could see the smile twitch on her lips and the ever so slight wiggle of her hips, and then the air filled with the unmistakable scent of arousal. He should have turned around then, run as far as he could just to get away from her and the feelings she was erupting inside him, but Ryker couldn’t move. Inside, his bear clawed and roared for release. Never before, even when he was a hormonal teenager, did Ryker ever have trouble controlling his bear. Once more he roared within him; this time, the sound escaped his throat.

Thinking quickly, Ryker covered it by clearing his throat deeply, a sound that startled the light-haired goddess to her feet.

    What the—

The woman’s words cut off and a hand flew to her mouth.

I’m not going to hurt you.

I certainly hope not. Her voice washed over him and through him, into his veins.

She removed her hand and the shock on her face was replaced with a sexy smile. A smile? I could have been an attacker. Or a wild animal. Hell. I am a wild animal.

Ryker shook his head and took a step toward the woman. You shouldn’t be out here, he said. It’s not safe.

Oh yeah? She took a step toward him, meeting him so they were only inches apart. From the close proximity, Ryker could see that her eyes were a striking blue. Maybe you could protect me? She reached out and ran one finger down his chest.

Ryker caught her finger in his hand. He ignored the sear of heat from her touch and stared at her. Who said I’m not the danger?

Her pupils flashed with desire, and her chest heaved, her breasts straining against the button of her blouse. Just one flick of my finger would set them free. Just—no.

Ryker swallowed hard and tried not to draw a deep breath. Her scent filled him, overpowering every one of his senses that should be telling him no. That should be telling him to back off and walk away. She was a human and he had no business with a human.

    Not even for one night?

The thought hit him hard and his bear growled with approval. She was obviously attracted to him. It wouldn’t hurt.

Well, I certainly hope you are. She shimmied a little closer and Ryker couldn’t help it—he took a breath. A deep one. And the moment he did so, his cock sprang to life, pressing almost painfully into the fly of his jeans.

    To hell with it.

He reached out and slipped his hand behind her neck to pull her closer. You don’t know what you’re playing at.

Her pink tongue slipped between her lips just for a moment before she said, Oh, I think I know exactly what I’m playing at.

    Fuck it.

Ryker pulled her close so her breasts pressed into his hard chest. He was desperate to taste that sweet honey for himself, but moments before his lips touched hers, a voice split the air.

    Nina?

The woman Ryker quickly put together as Nina pulled away, leaving him aching, hard, and unusually cold in her absence.

    Shit. What time is it?

Ryker shook his head, needing a moment to figure out what was happening. His lips should be on hers. He should be tasting her, drinking her in, tearing off that ridiculously tight blouse so he could palm each of those delectable tits in turn before pulling each nipple one by—

    I’ve gotta go.

She was leaving? She was leaving!

Ryker lunged after her, but at once pulled himself back again.

He was scattered all over the place and couldn’t pull his thoughts together fast enough. It was unusual and unsettling and completely foreign. Ryker was always in control. Never rattled. It’s what made him so damn good at his job.

It took him another moment, but then Ryker pulled himself together and took off after the beauty he now knew was called Nina.

    Chapter Three

Where have you been? Harper ran toward her and for a minute Nina felt a flicker of guilt for taking off the way she had. But then she remembered the sexy man who’d stolen her attention. Sure, she’d been forward. Really forward, but it was a sign really. She’d just finished convincing herself to let loose and have a little fun and there he was.

Like it was meant to be.

And if the six-foot-sexy-something with muscles she could see through his T-shirt wasn’t meant to be, she didn’t know what was.

Sorry. Nina shrugged. I just went to check out the stars and I guess I lost track of time. She flipped her hair back from her face and flashed her best friend a smile. I didn’t mean to worry you.

You have to be careful out here, Nina. There are animals and—

    Ryker.

Both women turned to see Axel slapping another man on the back. He led him closer and Nina’s pulse spiked at the familiar head of dark hair, and sharp green eyes that had sparked in the moonlight. Now with the light coming from the buildings, she could see the scruff of a beard on his jaw. She let her eyes travel the length of him, and almost missed it when Axel said, Ladies, this is my cousin. Ryker. Meet Harper. My mate. His gaze flicked to Nina. I mean, my fiancée.

Nina only vaguely noticed the use of the strange word again. She was too fixated on Ryker. Would she have let herself kiss him if they hadn’t been interrupted? Hell yes. She would have let herself do a whole lot more than kiss. That was evident by the dampness between her legs.

And this is Harper’s best friend, Nina, Axel said as he turned the introduction her way. She just arrived for the wedding festivities herself. Axel leaned in and kissed her on the cheek. It’s good to see you again, Nina.

Her smile for her best friend’s soon-to-be husband was genuine. It’s so good to be here, Axel. Nina forced her eyes away from Ryker and her gaze caught Harper’s. Nina immediately had to look away from her, too, because no doubt her best friend would be able to tell right away that something was going on. Now, what were you saying about wild animals out in the woods? Is that really something I should be concerned about?

Nina couldn’t help it; her eyes pulled back to Ryker as if the question was directed to him specifically.

This is the forest, Axel answered. There are all sorts of animals out there. Wolves, cougars—

Bears. Ryker looked directly into her eyes as he said it and a thrill went through her.

For a moment, she forgot about the others. Maybe you can protect me?

Somewhere beside her, Harper groaned. Let’s go inside. She grabbed Nina’s arm and yanked her toward the Den, leaving the men behind.

As soon as they were inside, Harper spun on her. What the hell was that all about?

Nina shrugged. He’s pretty hot, don’t you think?

He is. But that’s not what I meant, Nina. We’ve been friends for a long time and I’ve never seen you…well, seen you do that.

She couldn’t help but laugh at her best friend’s incredulity because it was true. Nina had never been the type to be so forward with a man. Not that way. True, she’d always been headstrong and had gone after exactly what she wanted—she usually got it, too—but she had never behaved quite like that with a man. To be fair, she’d never met a man quite like Ryker before. And she certainly had never met a man who’d inspired such strong feelings within seconds of meeting him.

I don’t know what to tell you, Nina said after a minute. I was outside and I was just thinking about how I needed a little…well…a little fun and there he was and…well, what could it hurt?

Harper laughed and shook her head. Far be it from me to say anything about it. After all, I remember saying something very similar to you about Axel and now look at me.

The comparison had Nina almost choking on her words. The last thing she wanted was to end up the way Harper had, about to be married with a child. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but it wasn’t for her. Not at all. She was looking for a little no-strings sexy time before she had to go face her real life again. That was it.

I think I could use another drink. She changed the subject and made a beeline into the great room where everyone else was gathered. Since she’d been gone, Kade and Luke, the younger two Jackson brothers, had joined them and Nina made her rounds greeting them while she sipped on another glass of wine. It didn’t take long for her to get wrapped up in the family dynamics. There was an excitement in the air for Harper and Axel’s big day, which was still just over a week away. It looked as though Nina and Ryker were the first guests to arrive, but judging by what the Jackson siblings were saying, only one of those two guests was actually supportive of the wedding.

I’m actually really surprised he came, Kira confessed as soon as Nina sat next to her on the couch. Kira was Kade’s twin, and pregnant with twins of her own. She hadn’t been at the ridge on Nina’s first visit, having only recently moved back with her partner Nash, but Nina had taken to her immediately.

Why would you be surprised? He’s your cousin, right? Don’t you have more family coming to the wedding?

Maybe. Kira shrugged, but she didn’t look too sure. But probably not. Our family doesn’t really believe in weddings.

That’s crazy. Nina sipped at her wine and surreptitiously scanned the room for the subject of their discussion. She hadn’t seen him since Harper dragged her inside. Why wouldn’t your family believe in weddings? And why would you be having one if you didn’t believe?

Kira laughed. It’s important to Harper. And what’s important to Harper has become important to us. Want to know a secret, though?

    Of course.

I secretly kind of like the idea, too.

You should do it. Nina didn’t bother mentioning the fact that Kira was almost six months pregnant with twins and her partner was obviously devoted to her. Nash was constantly making sure Kira was comfortable and had whatever she needed. The fact that they weren’t even considering marriage was crazy to Nina. And that said a lot, because she herself had never given the idea of tying the knot much thought.

We’ll see. Nina followed her new friend’s gaze across the huge timber-framed room to the giant stone fireplace, where Nash was currently stoking the fire. Being the beginning of September, the days were mostly still warm, but up in the mountains the evenings could get chilly.

I wasn’t chilly outside with Ryker.

So what’s the deal with Ryker then? Nina asked before she could stop herself. If your family doesn’t support the idea of weddings, why is he here?

    Honestly?

    Nina nodded.

He’s probably going to try to stop it.

She spoke so casually about it that Nina almost spat out her wine.

Are you serious? Nina put her glass down. Why would they invite him then? The idea that anyone would try to ruin her best friend’s wedding enraged her. Even if it was the incredibly sexy mountain of a man who’d flipped her stomach inside out earlier. He shouldn’t be here.

He’s family, Nina. He’s like a brother to us, and Axel loves him.

    But he’s—

The argument died on her lips when the door opened and the subject of their discussion himself entered the room. Heat rushed through her body and there was no doubt that Nina’s face turned a bright red. But it wasn’t until Ryker turned and looked right at her that she felt the heat move directly to her core.

Ryker had to admit, the tour of the ridge had been impressive. Even in the dark, Axel had been proud to show him the outbuildings, including the adventure building where they kept the mountain bikes, snowshoes, and other toys for the guests to enjoy the outdoors. There were at least a half dozen smaller cabins tucked into the woods. Axel explained that each of the Jackson siblings had their own private cabin to live in, and they’d proved to be a very popular draw with the guests as well, so they’d set to work building a handful of cottages that guests could stay in as well.

He’d been suitably impressed with what his cousins had managed to build in such a short time. No wonder Grizzly Ridge had become so successful so quickly. They were obviously passionate about what they were doing.

    And they were happy.

The fact that each of his cousins were happier than he’d ever seen them had not escaped Ryker, and he hadn’t even seen Kira yet. If he was honest with himself, he was a little nervous to see his little cousin. She’d always been a bit of a princess among the boys. Not because she was too girly to get dirty with them, but because they’d always just naturally protected her and his sister Natalia. The bond wasn’t as strong obviously as it was with her brothers, but Ryker had been hit hard too when he heard the news that she’d run off and left the clan. Now she was back and that should be a good thing. But she was mated to a wolf. A dog.

More than once on his tour of the ridge, Ryker had found himself simply shaking his head. How could his cousins have all chosen such wildly unsuitable mates? How could they have all stood by and let it happen?

It’s impressive, cousin, Ryker said when they found themselves back on the steps of the Den. I mean it. And he did. I can see how you’d choose this over Jackson Valley. I mean, family stuff aside. He chuckled. This place definitely holds some appeal. Not the least of which he’d run into in the woods earlier. A little treat to scratch his itch might be just what he needed to relax into this family holiday.

I’m glad you think so, Axel said. It means a lot. He turned and put his hand on the door handle, but hesitated before pulling it open. And Ryker? I really am glad you’re here, man. I know this isn’t easy. I know how Grandfather feels and I know more than anyone how that can impact a man. But I really hope you can see that despite all the rules that we grew up with, there’s more to life. A lot more.

Ryker let his cousin’s words sink in, but before he could rebut, Axel pulled the large wooden door open and they stepped into the warmth of the Den. Immediately they were met with a room full of laughter and chatter.

And the scent of honey and apples.

    His gaze found her immediately.

    Nina.

What would have happened if Harper hadn’t interrupted them earlier? He didn’t even have to speculate. He knew exactly what would have happened. Ryker would have threaded his fingers through her hair and held her head in place while he tasted every inch of that sweet mouth, taking his fill of the deliciousness he knew he’d find there. When he’d drunk his fill of her, his hands would have stripped her bare to expose the luscious curves that were only barely contained and—

Hey, come and see Kira. Axel interrupted his thoughts. She’ll be so excited to see you.

Instead of immediately following, Ryker hesitated, jarring Axel, who’d already started making his way across the room.

    What the hell, Ryker?

I was just… He scratched his chin, fully aware that he was being ridiculous. Just, who is that? The woman with Kira?

Axel turned to face him, his shit-eating grin so wide Ryker had to refrain from punching it off. I already introduced you. That’s Nina, remember? Harper’s best friend from Los Angeles.

Yes, I know. Ryker shook his head but he couldn’t take his focus off the woman. "But who is she?"

You wouldn’t be interested, Axel said with just enough of an edge that Ryker took note. She’s a human.

    Of course.

    I know.

    So why the interest?

Ryker couldn’t answer that. Not to himself and not to his cousin. Not in any way that would make sense.

None, he lied. I just thought maybe…

Axel looked as if he were going to say something more, but after a moment, he simply shook his head. Come on.

Ryker! Kira tried to wiggle her way up out of the couch as soon as she spotted him, but her growing stomach made the effort challenging.

Stay put, little cuz. Ryker couldn’t help but smile as he bent down to embrace his cousin. She may be heavy with the half breed twins of a dog but she was still his little Kira, and the moment he saw her, the only thing he wanted to say to her was how much he’d missed her. Which was exactly what he did.

I missed you, too. Kira wiped at the tears on her cheeks. So much. How have you been?

Ryker moved to sit down and noticed that Nina was no longer there. He scanned the room and found her by the kitchen, talking with some of the other ladies. It was probably for the best. Something about that woman was going to get him into trouble. He just knew it.

A moment later, he was able to push thoughts of Nina out of his mind—mostly—and focus on his cousin and catching up with her.

    Chapter Four

The next morning, Nina woke up to the chirping of birds outside of her window. Birds. She couldn’t remember the last time the sounds of nature had woken her instead of the bleating of an alarm clock.

    What time was it?

She reached for her phone and almost jumped right out of bed when she saw it was already after nine. She hadn’t slept in so late in years. She’d made it a habit of getting up before six every morning. At first it was because it was the only chance she had to get some words written on her own personal projects instead of whatever article it was that she’d been contracted to write. But eventually, her own projects were pushed to the side in favor for her contracted jobs. The time may have vanished, but her desire to write just for her, certainly hadn’t.

Nina stretched her arms over her head and relished in the laziness of the morning. After all, there was no reason to rush. She had the whole day ahead of her, with no plans at all. Hell, she could even work on her novel in the middle of the day if she wanted.

The luxuriousness of the idea filled her with unexpected joy. She wasn’t naive enough to think that it was a situation that would last for long. After all, she would have to get a job sooner or later. But for the moment, she was going to enjoy all aspects of her little vacation.

    Including Ryker.

The thought slammed into her and sparked a fire in her core. It was probably a good thing she’d made a quiet exit the night before instead of sticking around the party in the Den. From the moment Ryker had walked in, she’d felt his gaze on her and it was hot.

Probably not as hot as his touch would be.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to find out for herself; she did. But Nina also had enough self-control to know that it would probably not reflect well on her, or even Harper, if she jumped into bed with one of the Jackson cousins only hours after arriving at the ridge.

    No. She could wait.

    Hell, she had all week.

After a few more minutes of luxuriating in her bed, Nina finally grew restless enough to get up, shower, and head down to the main room. She’d been given a guest room in the Den. In the upstairs hallway, there were half a dozen or so private guest rooms, all of a good size with private bathrooms. Some, like hers, had little balconies off them that looked out to the mountains. Nina fully intended to take advantage of that balcony later to get some writing done.

    But first, breakfast.

Nina followed her nose to the kitchen, where the mouthwatering aroma of fresh bread filled the room. It smells so good in here, she all but groaned as her stomach rumbled. I’m so hungry.

Good. Kade turned away from the oven with a hot bread pan. Because this bread isn’t going to eat itself. He grinned as he set it down. But this one’s still pretty hot. I’ll cut you a few slices of a different one. Can I get you anything else? Some eggs? Fruit?

I can’t remember the last time I had fresh bread. That will be perfect. Unless, of course, you have some fresh coffee to go with it? Nina glanced around the kitchen, but Ella had beat her to it.

"Good morning, mi amiga." She set the mug down in front of her and went back around the massive counter to continue whatever preparations she and Kade were working on.

Harper had filled her in that although they’d initially hired Ella to be the head chef at the ridge so Kade would be free to work on other projects or help with the guests, the two of them worked so well together, that they were now both head chefs. She sat back and sipped her coffee while she watched the two of them work. Their easy love and affection for each other made her smile.

She’d never thought much about having a partner, or falling in love. But if she ever did, Grizzly Ridge was full of perfect examples of what she’d want that love to look like.

So, what are you going to do today, Nina? Kade put the bread down, a small plate with fresh butter and a small jar of preserves next to it, and Nina’s mouth watered.

Harper said something about going into town to try on dresses.

Oh, that’s been changed. Nina turned to see Chloe, Luke’s girlfriend, walk into the kitchen. She sat next to Nina and accepted a cup of coffee from Kade. We’re all going down to Bree’s Knees tomorrow instead so you have the day free to explore and take in some of the activities. Is there something you wanted to check out?

There was something she wanted to check out, all right. Nina almost choked on the piece of bread she’d just put in her mouth.

    Are you okay, Nina?

It took her a moment, but Nina composed herself and looked to Chloe, who grinned wickedly.

    I’m fine, she managed.

I’m sure you are. Chloe winked at her. Maybe you’d like to go for a bit of a hike today?

Nina looked down at her skinny jeans and sneakers. It wasn’t that she wasn’t completely unprepared for a hike, but…

Or a mountain bike? It was Kade who suggested it and the idea appealed at once.

It’s been years since I was on a bike.

Well, Kade said with a grin. Fortunately for you, it’s just like riding a bike. He burst out into laughter, clearly pleased with his attempt at humor and Nina couldn’t help but laugh along. Ella only rolled her eyes. I’ll send Luke a message, Kade said when he pulled himself together. I think he’s up at the adventure center anyway. Why don’t you finish up and head out there for a ride?

It really is quite the setup you guys have up here. Having woken up early, Ryker had taken his bear for a run along the ridge, just the way Axel had suggested. It’ll wear off some of that pent-up energy. His cousin had said it with an annoying grin on his face, but he’d been onto something. Ryker definitely had some energy to wear off.

    Sexual energy.

That woman had somehow gotten under his skin and more than anything, he wanted to taste her. And he would have, too, if she hadn’t taken off last night before he could go looking for her.

Even an hour-long run in the sunrise hadn’t managed to clear his head, which was why Ryker was now at the adventure center. Maybe Luke would lend him a bike or a kayak or something and he could burn off some more steam.

You like it? Luke looked up from the bike he was servicing. He had it up on a rack of some sort and was dropping grease on the chain. What am I saying? Of course you like it. He laughed. It’s amazing up here and so much better—never mind.

What? Ryker challenged him. What were you going to say? He crossed his thick arms over his chest. You were going to say it was better than the valley.

It wasn’t a question, because Ryker already knew the answer to that question. He hadn’t even been at the ridge twenty-four hours and he already thought it was better than Jackson Valley. The energy was better. Not so oppressed, maybe. That was it. There was no heavy iron fist rule at the ridge. Everyone seemed genuinely happy.

    His cousins seemed happy.

It is, Ryker admitted. I mean…

Don’t worry. Luke glanced at him. I won’t tell Grandfather you said so. Besides, you haven’t even had a chance to see what we really have to offer here. Wait until you see what the ladies have planned for the wedding.

    The wedding.

The sharp reminder of why he was actually there hit him hard.

What do you actually think of this wedding? Ryker knew he was taking a risk by asking Luke directly. But he was the only one of his cousins who was even remotely mated to a suitable candidate. A black bear…still not ideal. But better than a bear from a completely different continent, a half breed, or for God’s sake, a wolf. Although after talking with Kira the night before, Ryker had to admit, his cousin was completely in love with her mate and Nash didn’t seem all that bad. For a dog. They were happy.

There was that word again. Happy.

Luke shrugged, pulling his attention back to the conversation at hand. Honestly? Ryker nodded. At first I thought it was ridiculous. I mean, they’re mated. They have a cub. Why the pomp and circumstance? It’s such a human tradition.

    Exactly.

But then… Luke shrugged again. I don’t know, I see how excited Harper is about it all and frankly, it’s getting all of the women excited. The way Chloe explained it to me is like a celebration of love. So yes, they’re mated, but this is celebrating that.

Ryker shook his head. "Except you can’t say mated."

Nope. Luke laughed. Too many humans around. He grew momentarily serious. And no shifting where they might see you. That’s a hard rule, Ryker.

I know. I know. I’ve spent most of the last few years traveling around humans, remember? I got it.

It’s an easy one to forget when you’re out here.

Ryker pretended to be annoyed but he didn’t meet Luke’s eyes because he had completely forgotten about the whole no shifting around humans when he’d gone for his run earlier.

Sure. I got it. Ryker spun the front wheel of the bike on the rack. Hey, he said, changing the subject. What do you say you lend me one of these for the day? I need to get out of here.

Luke shot him a look. It wouldn’t have anything to do with Harper’s friend, would it?

Ryker’s bear growled, instantly defensive. What the hell do you mean by that?

Yeah, what do you mean by that?

He spun around to see the subject of the conversation and his frustration standing in the door. Nina.

She stepped inside the adventure center and at once the scent of apples and honey filled his head and made him dizzy. Ryker leaned back against the workbench to steady himself. No way was he going to fall down or make a fool of himself in front of her.

It’s me. Her voice sounded like the gentlest tinkling of bells in his ears. What were you saying about me?

Just that you wanted to go for a mountain bike ride today, Luke said in a move that Ryker was thankful for. In fact, Ryker was just asking me for a bike as well. Maybe you could go together?

A slow, sexy smile spread across her face. That sounds perfect. She looked directly at him in a move that had his bear roaring. Are you up for it?

He took a step toward her, leaving the safety of the bench he was leaning on. Oh, I think I’m more than up for it.

Beside him, Ryker could vaguely hear Luke chuckling under his breath. "Okay, you two. Let me get you set up with a few bikes and then you can go do all the exploring you can handle."

Ryker did his best to wait patiently while Luke set them up with bikes, helmets, and then a map of the trails he’d set up in the area. Stick to the green runs over here. Luke pointed to a space on the map, but Ryker was only half listening. It was almost impossible to concentrate with her scent filling him. He was going to have to get her out of his system and soon if he had any hope of surviving the next week.

    Chapter Five

This is amazing. Nina gripped her handlebars tighter as her bike flew over a rocky abutment so she caught a little bit of air before landing on the path again.

Keep pedaling! Ryker shouted in front of her and she did as she was told.

There was no way she should be able to keep up with him. He was a solid mass of muscle and fitness, but he was clearly toning it down for her sake. A fact she appreciated. But not as much as she appreciated the view of his backside. Staying close to that was all the motivation she needed.

How are you doing back there?

She was dripping with sweat, and her quads burned with the exertion, but she was loving every minute of it. I’m good. Keep going!

Her lungs screamed at her. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d put in such an intense physical effort. It had been months since she’d gone to a spin class regularly; her travel schedule hadn’t made it possible. But apparently those few sessions were enough to keep her in decent-ish shape. Either way, incentive of a sexy ass or not, she was going to need to rest soon. Despite her insistence that she was fine.

As if he read her mind, a few minutes later, Ryker skidded his bike to a stop and dismounted. I need a break.

Like hell he did. He’d barely broken a sweat. But Nina was definitely not going to complain. She practically fell off her bike, grabbed her water bottle from the holster and stumbled through the grass for a few feet before collapsing on her back in a faux exhaustion.

She would have been more than happy to lay there as she caught her breath, with the cool grass cooling her underneath. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths before she became very aware that the sun was no longer warming her face.

Nina snapped her eyelids open and stared directly into the piercing green eyes of Ryker, who was hovering just over her. Close enough to—

    What are you—

    Are you okay?

Okay? Was she okay? Was he seriously asking her that while his hot, hard body was only inches away from her?

I’m… Nina swallowed hard. I’m fine, she managed. I’m just resting. That was…

    Intense?

Once again, Nina swallowed hard. This time, her chest rose and fell, coming dangerously close to touching him. Very.

But the bike riding wasn’t what was intense. It was him. It was the sexy, salty, slightly dangerous smell of him. The way he looked at her as if he were looking directly into her. It was the way his lips curled up into just the very slightest of smiles that told her in no uncertain terms just how badly he wanted her.

And damn if she didn’t want him too.

Enough was enough. She reached up and slipped her hand behind his neck to pull him down to her. And the second his lips pressed to hers, she was completely gone.

He tasted like salt, and coffee, and mint and…she wanted more.

Fortunately, Ryker responded in kind. He caught himself before crushing her, and his arms caged her in, making her feel at once small and fragile but strong and powerful. A small groan she only vaguely recognized as coming from her escaped her lips and it only served to fuel him.

God, you’re sexy. His words were a growl against her ear before he started to focus his attention on the sensitive skin there. He nipped and sucked kisses down her neck.

His kisses were sparking all kinds of fires inside her, and she threatened to burn up if she didn’t get more of him. Now.

Nina reached up and tugged at his T-shirt. She needed it off. She needed to feel his skin with her hands. The heat that she knew was there.

But Ryker’s hand stopped her and he pulled back to look in her eyes.

What? She hated herself for the desperation threaded in her voice, but she couldn’t have stopped it if she’d wanted to. She was desperate for him. What’s wrong? Why—

I just want to be clear. His eyes narrowed with seriousness. This is… He swallowed hard. This is just a—

Nina almost burst out with laughter as she realized what he was trying to say. Oh my God, she finally said. It’s only sex. That’s all.

Oh, but it most certainly wouldn’t be ALL.

If only he would stop being so serious and just kiss her already.

Emboldened, she reached once again for his neck to pull her down to her. Once more, he stopped her.

Nina, I just need you to—

    Kiss me.

She pressed her lips to his before he could protest again. Dammit Ryker, you want this or you don’t.

    Oh, he wanted it.

More than anything, he wanted to put his mouth on her luscious lips again, taste her honey and be rewarded with the even sweeter nectar that was sure to follow.

But he also needed to be sure.

There was too much inappropriate mating going on around him. He needed to know that wasn’t what she was looking for.

Luke’s warning rang in his memory.

    Too many humans around.

Did she know? Would he be blowing it completely by saying something?

No. He couldn’t outright ask her.

    Ryker?

He snapped back to the moment at hand. To the incredibly sexy woman lying beneath him, her breasts heaving and straining against her T-shirt.

He needed them free. He needed to see them. To touch them. To taste them.

    Now.

    Nothing serious?

Hell no. Her lips twisted in a sexy grin. Kiss me. Now.

Who was he to not oblige such an order?

Without another breath of hesitation, his lips pushed to hers, his tongue plundering her mouth, taking what he wanted. What he needed.

With one hand bracing himself, he tore at her T-shirt, a moment too late realizing he’d ripped the thin cotton away completely. But then it didn’t matter because her glorious tits only barely encased in black lace were lying before him.

Ryker could hardly contain the growl that rose up within him but he managed to restrain himself moments before he tore her bra off.

Instead, he lowered his head and took one hard nipple into his mouth, suckling it through the lace, which had the desired effect of making her squirm; her hips ground up against him and the increasingly hard erection between his legs.

    Woman. You are…

He couldn’t even finish the thought because whatever it was about Nina, it made it hard to think, hard to breathe, but so help him, it wasn’t going to be hard to—

Shut up and get your pants off.

    Yes ma’am.

Ryker loved a woman who knew what she wanted, and Nina definitely knew what she wanted. But
