The action takes place between the years 1884 and 1895, mostly on or around country circus grounds, under a circus tent, along small town streets and barns.
The action can be staged, optionally, within and around a single circus ring — with flats and props, moved in and out, suggesting the scenes; or, alternately, between the full stage and apron.

ACT 1, SCENE 1: On the edge of an unsavory circus midway, afternoon, late summer, 1883.
CUSTOMERS roam about, gazing up at gaudy banner lines. Various shady CON MEN posing as customers infiltrate the crowd. CUSTOMERS are being pitched, some falling prey to the three-shell con game and other rackets. On a small platform in front of the side show, a few SIDESHOW ACTS cavort teasingly.

WHILE YOU WAIT, MISTER, BET YOU A BUCK
YOU CAN’T FIND THE PEA
(FIRST GENT falls for the pitch and tries finding a pea under one of three shells being moved about by FIRST CON. Each time he fails, reacts as if has he been set up, and is silenced by ANOTHER CON, giving him a menacing look, and he passes on. At about the same time, a WOMAN examining her purse in dismay, turns a nasty face on the scene and walks off the midway in disgust. AL RINGLING bursts out from behind a wall of canvas, angry, followed by MARTY
