About this ebook

Parenting can be very difficult and most times require expertise in handling children. A lot of times, you see parents finding it hard to correct their children, because they think it is impossible to correct a child lovingly.
Another challenge faced is that as a child advances in age, the parents tend to encounter challenges understanding how to handle children at different stages of their lives and you’ll discover there’s so much gap created between the child and the parents.
Giving a time-out can be a very effective way to change your child’s behavior. I have often had parents come to my office and say “time-out does not work with my child”. After asking some clarifying questions it usually becomes clear that there is a break down in the implementation or follow through of the time-out. It’s not that time-out doesn’t work; it’s more that the parents aren’t working the time-out properly.
This book, “Advanced parenting skills: Understanding your child” would help bring solutions to these parenting problems and help relate with your child/children more appropriately. There is no reason why you should not get this book right now.

    Dedication

Understanding children might seem to be a herculean task. Kudos to everyone who is a parent and I dedicate this book to every parent putting efforts into getting to understand their kids.

    Chapter One

    Powerful Communication Skills

Communication skills are one of the most important parenting skills. If you can catch this, you did it!

Here is the first major principle.

    LISTEN

Before you try to speak, remember to listen and understand so you can be heard. Remember, kids don't need to have good conversations; they must also listen carefully.

So let's listen! We do this for several reasons.

    1. We want to make sure children know that we are not just talking about them when they are talking to us. May they be listened to, heard and understood.

    2. We take care of information gathering. Not just to hear what they are saying and to be able to listen carefully. You have to collect information. Learn to understand their belief systems and values, as well as their feelings and things like that, as they are used as motivators and ways to persuade them and influence them and sell them your ideas.

Not only do you have to understand what they are saying, but also how they think about it and why they think these things.

So remember to listen and understand before you try to speak in order to be heard.

Keep in mind, Instruct, don't lecture. Ask yourself this inquiry: Would you prefer to hear yourself out? no one wants to be taught either!

Children don't want to know what to do. You don't want to feel like you're receiving a conference. You want to feel like you're talking to a friend, someone who cares, someone who understands.

This is why it is so important to listen first and then not to
