    The dance floor was a whirl of color and motion, people dancing to the sounds of yesteryear pumped out by the energetic band on the stage at the far end of the spacious dining room. Tansy, Shikha, and I giggled as we hurried off the dance floor and wound our way back to our table through the cheerful—and at this point, rather inebriated—crowd.

    The theme of this year’s annual charity ball, a fundraiser for the local humane society, was Big Band Era, and the quirky Holiday Hotel was the perfect venue. It had started out as a motel built right after World War II. The current owners purchased it twenty or so years ago, around the time I moved to the area to attend college, and turned it into…well, there really wasn’t a simple way to explain it.

    Wooden panels maybe four feet wide covered the walls, making it feel as if you were belowdecks on a ship. The walls were plastered with old movie posters and framed paintings and photos of people, dogs, and boats that must have come from a slew of estate sales. The lamps and light fixtures were made of
