I’d always tried so hard to stay out of trouble at work, I was determined that I would never have to make that terrifying walk to personnel. Truthfully there was no escape from that fate, since the introduction of corporal punishment on male employees every woman in a position of power had schemed to see every male punished.

It was largely irrelevant what you were disciplined for, all you needed to know was that you’d return with a sore backside. The majority of punishments involved the cane, you could consider yourself the luckiest man on earth if you left with a simple slippering or paddling.

Worst of all was the birch rod that was kept in the boardroom and saved for the very worst offenders. Those that received it often did so in place of the sack, choosing an incredibly painful beating and a final warning over unemployment.

I only knew of one colleague that had received the birch, he had returned to our office bleary eyed and recalcitrant. He was a different man when he returned; chastened and broken, terrified that he might be caught breaking the rules once more.

The thought of such a punishment filled me with dread, never more so than the day I was presented with my dreaded summons; a large square of red paper that informed me I had to report to the punishment room by reception and the precise moment I was expected. The details of why I had been sent were largely irrelevant to me;
