Introduction
This is a Novelette which could be classified as Science Fiction. I have tried to make it plausible and called it Science Fiction only because it has never happened before although with a stretch of the imagination one could make it appear real. The author is far from an expert scientist so it may not have appeal to someone with a Doctorate Degree in Physics; I don’t know. It takes place in the small Upstate City of Geneva, New York which is on Seneca Lake; one of the Finger Lakes. I have taken liberties with descriptions of the geography of the area, but this IS fiction. The story line comes from the imagination of my second son, Burr Jr.
Chapter 1 The Girl Next Door
Charles Winchester was 8 years old today. He had received a few cool gifts and had his fill of cake and ice cream. The party was over and as usual he was bored. He sat in an alcove with a dormer window and gazed at the quiet street outside.
He had lived his life in the same house on West Avenue in the small upstate city of Geneva, New York which is on Seneca Lake; one of the Finger Lakes. He watched the cars hit the pot holes in the black top up and down the tree lined street. Like most of the streets in town his was badly in need of repair. A few of the drivers were familiar with the area and swerved to miss the worst of the holes.
Generally at this time of day, in mid afternoon, he would be in the spacious fenced in back yard but the party had tired him. Chuck, as he was called, had a play ground of his own, consisting of a large sand box and a tire hanging from a large oak which sported a well built tree house. Today, however, he gazed out at the front yard which looked much the same as all of the yards on the street. There was a picket fence on each side and a wall of shrubbery in the front next to the side walk.
He awoke from his day dreams when he saw a moving van back into the driveway of the house next door which had been empty for several months. Finally someone had bought the house and was moving in. Chuck hoped they would be friendly. It was nearly the time of year for going back to school but he didn’t have many friends anyway. He had always been a loner. Some of the neighborhood boys came around because he had a playground in the back yard and a vacant lot in back for playing baseball. He had wanted to have a gang meeting in the tree house but it had never materialized.
He was hoping to see a large family of playmates moving next door but all he saw was a girl around his own age. He was always shy around girls but there were some that came to the baseball field when they had a
