The Race

The pavement was new concrete, still warm from the hot July sun beating down on its new gray finish.   The new stretch of roadway had just been open a couple of days, when a couple of white stripes were painted across the lanes exactly 1320 feet apart.  No, the highway department didn't paint these; they were more exact and painted carefully across all three lanes. The new street was just north of DeSoto, a southern suburb of Dallas.

The sky was clear; all the stars could be seen tonight, especially since there were no street lights yet to hide the myriad of stars overhead. 

Late in the evening the sound of the crickets was broken when two cars pulled to a stop at the first painted stripe.   Side by side they sat for a moment engines idle, the drivers conversing.
