It had everything I don’t like on it – whitewalls, fake spotlights, lake pipes and skulls

When I first saw this car at the 2021 Supernats I just stopped and stared. At first, it didn’t really compute – a 1950’s land yacht done up as a 1960’s street racer – but the more I looked, the more I liked it. But what exactly was it?

After some research, I narrowed it down to a’56 Chrysler New Yorker. Turns out I was wrong, but forgivably so, as you’ll soon see.

It turned up again at the Hot Rod Drags and there I had the opportunity to catch up with its owner, 29-year-old Hayden Mummery. This time, I got the full story.

Now, Hayden is of the generation to whom social media is an integral part of their lives, so via Instagram I also know he’s an avid mountain biker and motorcycle rider. Or, as he put it, “I’m into anything old with wheels, or an engine. Or just wheels.”

He’s pretty handy with the spanners too, having a number of 1970’s motorcycle restorations under his skinny belt, as well as a few car projects,
