FOREWORD
What do Yoga - a profound spiritual system or a series of physical exercises, the Harappa, or Indus Valley Civilization, a civilization, worlds apart from all other societies, and Easter Island (Rapa Nui), a tiny speck in the enormous Pacific Ocean all have in common? Separated over four thousand years and thousands of kilometers, yet they all share a very peculiar and unique connection.
YOGA
Yoga is a spiritual discipline which originated in ancient India. In Vedic Sanskrit it means: to add, to join, to unite, or to attach. The ultimate goal of yoga is Moksha
which means: liberation, end of suffering, release from illusion, the cessation of perturbation of consciousness, etc. although the exact definition, depend on the different philosophical disciplines. Various traditions of yoga are also found in Hinduism, Buddhism Jainism and Sikhism. For example, in Buddhism the equivalent of Moksha
is Nirvana

Specifically, yoga is one of the six astika
, schools of Hindu philosophy:

Vaisesika (the atomist school)
Samkhya (the enumeration school)

Mimamsa (the tradition of Vedic exegesis)
Vedanta (UttaraMimamsa, the Upanishad’s tradition)
The following texts will be dedicated to some of the most important schools of yoga:
A) Karma yoga: The yoga of action.
B) Bhakti yoga: The yoga of devotion.
C) Jnana yoga: The yoga of knowledge.
D) Raja yoga: Yoga Sutras of Patañjali (who lived around 150 BC)
Patañjali systemized different schools of yoga into one consisting of eight steps (Raja yoga). Each step should be practiced consecutively. For example: Many yoga students begin with meditation having no idea what that word means.
