About this ebook

ANCIENT INDIA'S HINDU ORIGIN

The reprimand of Lord Shiva by Brahma for harboring sexual feelings for his own daughter, Sandhya, led him to consult Daksha and his other sons about what to do. Due to his high status as a yogi and his lack of knowledge of women and passion, Shiva had little understanding of sexual feelings. Trying to make Shiva suffer from love's pangs, Brahma enlisted the help of Kama and Rati, his wife.

The creation will continue to be mediocre unless Shiva indulges in sexual activity. Only Kama's power can triumph over Shiva, who is highly detached." Thus saying, Brahma requested the Kama to try his wiles on Lord Shiva. Vasanta was also created for the Kama to be his constant companion so that he could succeed in his adventures. "Kama, please try to enchant Shiva on behalf of the world. Shoot your arrows at Shiva wherever he goes to entice him to take a wife. Follow him wherever he goes, whether over mountains, through forests, or on peaks. You are the only person who can make this happen. He dislikes women and is in complete control of his own actions."

With these words of the Creator in his ears, Kama, accompanied by Vasanta and the gentle breeze of Maharashtra, departed for the harsh mountains, caves, and dales in which Shiva roamed. As the seasons changed, Kama's journey continued. There was no longer a cold wind blowing against the icy peaks of the Himalayas. Instead, it was swept by a gentle Malaya breeze, fragrant with the scent of a thousand flowers. Amid all the blossoming trees, Shiva was immersed in atomic bliss, not beguiled by the beauty. Kama's sugarcane bow sent arrow after arrow flying. Rati and he both tried every trick in the book. Shiva was immune to their charm, but all living things succumbed to theirs. All living things except him were affected. Brahma returned dejectedly to the Kama after his ego had been crushed.

Kama's sugarcane bow sent arrow after arrow flying. Rati and he both tried every trick in the book. Shiva was immune to their charm, but all living things succumbed to theirs. All living things except him were affected. Brahma returned dejectedly to the Kama after his ego had been crushed.

Then Brahma replied, O Brahma! Hear me out. Shiva remained untouched despite my best efforts to enchant him. Despite all my efforts to shake him out of it, he remained in a state of samadhi (superconsciousness). We followed Shiva wherever he went and shot arrows after arrows at him, but neither he nor his gana (followers) were moved. Whenever he emerged from samadhi, I placed many animal and bird pairs in front of him, all engaged in mating games. Nothing moved him. He never showed any signs of vulnerability to my arrows. Vasanta, my companion, also tried her best. He planted fragrant flowers on the mountainside and lotuses on the lakes. The sages themselves fell prey to passion when faced with all this abundance of nature. Should I now discuss the status of the ordinary mortal? Nevertheless, Lord Shiva did not waver in his demeanor. His anger towards me was nonexistent. I was left with no choice but to return. It is impossible for anyone to arouse lust in him anywhere in the world. You must find someone who can arouse his love if you want him to marry. So saying, Kama returned to his abode along with his wife and his crew of helpers.

Shiva's nature was tamasic, passive, and contemplative, while Brahma's was rajasic, active, and energetic. Vishnu, the cosmic savior, was between them, completely sattvic, always interested in keeping cosmic order. At this news, Brahman felt dejected and was unsure what to do.

Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva represent creation, preservation, destruction, shrishti, sthiti, and samhara. The Creator, Brahma, and the Destroyer, Rudra, were perfectly balanced due to his aggressiveness and regressiveness. Shiva realized that if he became totally indifferent to the world, the cosmic balance would be shattered since the work of creation requires tension. Lord Vishnu, who had created Brahma himself, popped into his mind. When he thought of him, Vishnu appeared before him, a blue-colored, four-armed being with lotus-eyed eyes. Brahma blamed the Kama for failing to enchant Shiva, telling his tale of woe.

When hearing this story, Lord Vishnu smiled and said, O Brahma! Where has this delusion come from? Shiva is the Mahayogi immersed in bliss and free from all illusions. How do you not realize this? How was it possible for you to make him fall victim to Kama's tricks? If you really want Shiva to marry you, you will have to pray to him directly. He is the manifestation of Shakti. He is Shivaa's feminine counterpart. She is a part of him, so she will become his wife if she takes on a human appearance. Make your son Daksha do penance and worship that Goddess, and ask him to give her to Shiva as his wife. When we emerged from that formless Brahman, it was declared that Lakshmi would be my feminine counterpart, Saraswati yours, and Sati Shiva's. In his incarnation as Rudra, Sadashiva came out of your brows. Now, he resides in Kailasa, waiting for Shivaa to appear in the form of Sati, the daughter of Daksha. Make all preparations for her arrival." Thus saying, Lord Vishnu blessed Brahma and disappeared.

Following Vishnu's departure, Brahma began to meditate on Shivaa, also known as Durga, the feminine counterpart of Shiva. Vidya, or knowledge, and avidya, or ignorance, are the two aspects of the Goddess. This supreme being is none other than the Goddess. When the Goddess Durga saw Brahma's penance, she appeared pleased. The woman had four divine arms, one holding a lotus and the other holding a sword. The fingers were raised in
