    PART ONE

    Train to Nowhere

    Chapter 1

After high school, I decided to take a few months off before I chose which college to go to. I might have been accepted to three prestige’s colleges and at the time of applying to each one of them I was sure which one I wanted to go to, the other two were just backups. However when it came time to accept one of them I just couldn’t do it. So rather, than make a huge mistake I decide to go to Stockholm and visit my grandparents for a while. I had six month to spare before enrolment started and I hadn’t seen Nana and Abba in almost a year, mom and dad went last Christmas when I was working an internship at the local law firm Halley, Barron, and Cohen so I couldn’t go. I  have to admit I was a bit nervous at the thought of traveling so far away from home, don’t get me wrong its not like I never travelled alone before. I used to go out of state all the time when I was a cheerleader in high school; however, I never travelled out of the country alone. Nevertheless, I am a grownup now so I guess I’ll have to grin and bear it.

Friday night came and I was ready; I was packed, I had my passport, visa and travellers checks and I was ready to roll. Mom went into her motherly sob crushing my spine in a bear hug that would make a grown man cry and dad was too busy trying to pry her off me to do pretty much anything else. So when it was time for me to board I was sad and delighted at the same time, I just hope I don’t get lost and end up in China. I wish I could say the flight went by fast, but alas, I wasn’t that lucky; economy class was so full that it was impossible to sleep not to mention breathe. When we did finally land, I found myself running around like a real tourist; firstly searching for my bags, then a taxi to take me to the train station. According to the ticket, my train was leaving in 10 minutes and I had no time to waste.

Metro Station and hurry please. I instruct the taxi driver whether he spoke English or not. Lucky for me I chose the right one as we stop infront of the station within 5 minutes.

I half expected to find the place packet being Christmas and all instead its dead; not a single person even the ticket counter was closed. My hart raced, the train couldn’t have already left its not even time yet. I was about to leave and head back to the taxi when I feel a gust of wind hitting me behind my head followed by a loud,

ALL ABOARD. To my surprise, a Silver train had entered the station unnoticed and the conductor was already helping people on,

What the…where did all these people come from this place was empty a few minutes ago? I don’t understand and since when is the trains Silver mom told me that all Metro trains are Green? I state loudly before the conductor asks me if I’m boarding.

Are you boarding the Silverpilen Miss, it is the last train for the evening? I look at my watch before answering, well the time was right and its the only train here so I guess…

Yes I guess I am thank you.

The passengers all seem strange they don’t speak or move or anything, even when I try to make conversation with the young girl sitting across from me she just stares into space.

Hi I’m Helena do you take the train a lot? Tell me is it just me or is this train freezing? Helloooooo! OOOOK I guess she’s not a talkative person lucky me. I’ll just go over there and phone my mom to tell her I made it onto the train. I say excusing myself. What a weird country this is good Lord. Why are these people so pale haven’t they heard of sunbathing? Maybe its just because I’m from California that this all feels so strange, the people there are polite and not at all pale lol. My cell phone takes a while to connect and when I think I have my mom on the other end the phone sends out a high pitch noise across the speaker that nearly pops my eardrums.

Sorry Miss no electronic equipment will work on the Silverpilen. A soft voice interrupts me. When I look down, I see a small gangly street urchin staring up at me.

Nothing leaves the Silverpilen… He continues before getting a faraway expression in his eyes and when I touch his shoulder, it is as cold as ice.

Are you ok? What’s your name, where are your parents? I ask concerned before the conductor steals him away with a stern and angry look directed straight at me.

    Chapter 2

What was going on with these people sheesh, one would swear I was carrying an extremely infectious disease or something? This trip was supposed to be relaxing, but it was stressing me out more than I could have imagined. I mean I knew it would a little seeing as I was travelling alone to a foreign country; however, this is getting ridiculous. I take my assigned seat again glancing at my watch to see how long I've been on the train only to notice that it too had stopped working and was stuck on twelve midnight. This is ridiculous first my phone now my watch, aren't these modern strains supposed to be fitted with Wi-Fi and such technology not to mention heat and comfortable seats? As far as I can see this train is just an empty shell with seats.

Oh excuse me Sir how… I address the conductor as he speeds past completely ignoring me.

Well guess that answers my question. I mumble to myself in frustration before realising I need to go to the bathroom. I rise once more pulling my trolley bag behind me in search of the nearest restroom.

Halfway down the cabin and still nothing. Maybe I should go through that red door maybe the bathroom is inside there. I convince myself struggling for a few minutes to pull the door open; its like its frozen shut and when I finally do force it open a cold cloud of air turns my warm breath into smoke.

Gosh I swear this cabin is worse than the other one its like walking into a freezer. I can only see a few people scattered about the cabin not that I can see their faces clearly for some reason my vision is blurry, maybe the coldness has affected my vision; froze my corneas or something strange like that. Every step I take closer to the rear of the cabin increases this uneasy feeling I’m feeling, pushing up until it surrounds my heart. My mouth and throat seems dry as well completely devoid of moisture. Maybe I should go back and just hold it in until we get to the next station where Nana and Abba are waiting for me, I’m sure its not that long to wait we must have been travelling for at least two hours now and mom said it only takes two and a half hours. I continue walking, advancing more and more and by the time I reach the rear of the cabin I can no longer feel my toes.

You shouldn’t be back here Miss. A little voice warns from beyond my blurry vision. I squint my eyes making out the little urchin’s frame then his face.

Oh its you I wondered where you disappeared to I…

You shouldn’t be back here Miss. He repeats emotionlessly.

Why not its not like I don’t have a ticket and anyway I’m looking for the bathroom I…

He won’t be happy; he doesn’t like it if everything is not where it should be. He states still staring into space devoid of emotion.

Why? I don’t understand why would he care where I am?

That’s just the way he runs the Silverpilen. He clarifies before grabbing my hand and clutching it in his icy grip.

    You’re not one of us…you shouldn’t be here…

Ok already I’ll go back to my seat. I answer annoyed trying to pull free.

No Miss you shouldn’t be on this train, you don’t belong here. He reminds me again then leads me to the red door and shows me out.

You should get off before it is too late.

Why? Wait! Answer me! Why should I leave the train? Wait! I call as he closes then locks the door totally ignoring my questions. I continue to bang away at the door window that freezes up immediately after its closed, watching the little boy disappear. What could he have meant, I didn’t get the impression that he only wanted me off the train because he didn’t like tourists. No, it was something deeper as if he was trying to tell me something, something...

Can I help you Miss? A dry heavy base voice reaches my ears from over my left shoulder. When I turn, I find the conductor staring at me with his dead black eyes.

His eyes were like that of a snake or a shark and if the adage about the eyes being the windows to the sole was true then his sole was not only dead it was black as coal. A wave of terror suddenly rushes over me and I really try hard to remain calm and not lose it completely. His intensely cold stare unnerved me to the point that I couldn’t even look or answer him, and when he placed his hand upon my trolley bag taking control of it I didn’t even fight against it, I just allowed him to take it and followed him back to my seat. This time everyone’s eyes were on me boring though me like laser beams, looking at me as I moved down the aisle. I felt like a prisoner being led down a very dark tunnel to the execution chamber or in this case the electric chair. This is really not how I imagined my time off to be, I did expect some slight discomfort and the occasional problem, but this was beginning to border on scary not to mention freaky and distressing.

    Chapter 3

As I sat there reflecting on the strangeness of the past few hours the boy, the train and the scary conductor. Wondering why I could not shake the uneasy feeling and why a little boy that did not know me from Adam would want to scare me into leaving the train. I could not think of any ulterior motives he would have in going through all this trouble simply to scare me. Well if it was not that, then there had to be another explanation…a logical explanation however, and by the intensity of the gnawing feeling in my gut at that very moment, the answer was not going be something I would like. It is then that I decide to throw caution to the wind and go on another fact-finding mission; I needed to find the answers to the multitude of questions I had and it was clear no one on this train were going to give them to me. I place my trolley bag next to me on the empty seat unzipping it as softly as I could trying not to alert the other passengers to what I was planning.

Then very skilfully putting on the clothes; layering them one over the other, a barrier of silk, nylon and cotton blend of sorts to keep the icy conditions out until
