Introduction
When we speak or write, we aim to be heard, understood, persuade, influence and more. These goals can be achieved effectively by articulating our thoughts using choice words and phrases. Well-phrased expression of an idea can captivate your audience and channel their focus on your expressed thoughts. The collection of phrases in this book which were compiled over the course of a decade will get you noticed when you speak or write. Moreover, learning and using these phrases will enable you to construct your own phrases to achieve similar effects.
The expressions in this book are not organized; their appearance is random. The reason for this is to make the process of learning these expressions more interesting by eliminating the predictability factor. You never know what the next expression is until you read it; anticipation of the unknown keeps the mind engaged and stimulates interest. The phrases that are the backbone of the book appear in Bold Italics. Throughout the book, these phrases appear in illustrative sentences to help readers understand their meaning. The following are some examples.
In this scenario, the school has increased class sizes due to a shortage of funds, and you are therefore writing a letter to the principal expressing how you feel this will impact the students. One way to convey this is by writing something akin to, Increasing class sizes will adversely affect, our children’s education.
Though to better capture the essence of what you wish to communicate, it might be better to write, "Our children will take the brunt of increased class sizes."
You desire to write a letter to your city manager affirming that most residents agree with the current policy. An easy way to state this would be, Most residents agree with the policies in effect,
or, Most residents like your policies.
Although to say that "The current policies resonate with the residents," would more artfully communicate your thoughts.
In this situation, you would like to admit to your boss that the project deadline was missed as a result of a variety of causes. It could be communicated by saying, We missed the deadline due to several factors.
A more artful approach, however, would be, "We missed the deadline due to a confluence of factors."
You intend to tell your reader or listener that the automation in your company has resulted in significant changes in the manufacturing operations. This could be expressed in one of the following ways: Automation has caused significant changes in the manufacturing operations,
or, Automation has resulted in significant changes in the manufacturing operations.
Better yet, try, "Automation has spawned significant changes in the manufacturing operations."
I hope you find this book useful and enjoyable.
