    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my mother, Mrs. Blanche C. Burns,

    May 8, 1902 – November 12, 2002.

My mother had over 100 years to acquire wisdom. Among the major things imparted to me through her wisdom were love and compassion. My mother believed a person starting a task should work diligently to complete the task. This book is the result of much diligent work. It is hopeful that this book will bring an abundance of entertainment and loads of enjoyment to all that read its pages.

    CHAPTER 1

    Freshman Wave

Dodecaville, a moderately sized Midwestern community, is the home of the Donner family. The Donners are looked upon as a normal American family by their friends and peers. That is basically how the Donners would like to look upon themselves but they cannot. They cannot because of one important fact unknown to others outside of the family, the fact that an absolutely remarkable, profound, mathematical and scientific discovery was made by Lyte Donner several years before.

Altogether, there are six members of the Donner household. Let’s meet the Donners. Lyte Donner, a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Local University, is the dad and the head of the household. Jaseta Donner is Lyte Donner’s wife and the mother of the four Donner children. The oldest child is Ray Joseph Donner. Ray is now a junior in college. Wave Jaseta Donner is the second oldest child and is now in her first year of college. Dawn Jane Donner is the third oldest. Dawn is a junior in high school. Laser Joe Donner is the fourth oldest which of course means that he is the youngest of the Donner children. Laser Joe has just begun his high school years. The Donner children are each spaced about two years apart.

Lyte Donner is the owner of a chain of retail stores located in the Dodecaville area. The stores are called Electric Air and are geared to radio controlled model aircraft related items for hobbyists, general electrical devices associated with consumer electronics, including CD players, MP3 players, DVD players, amplifiers, receivers, home theater, some electronic kits, and the like.

As mentioned, Lyte Donner made an amazing mathematical and scientific discovery in a year previous to the current. He discovered the existence of a remarkable phenomenon, an extension to our ordinary space. Lyte and Jaseta referred to this extension of ordinary space as ExtraOrdinary Space. Lyte perfected a vehicle for traveling in the ExtraOrdinary Space which he referred to as the INTEGRAL. Lyte was led to this discovery by examining mathematical models. Mankind lives in a three dimensional world. For our globe, man has developed various systems designed to pinpoint locations on the globe. One common system in wide use today involves the notions of longitude and latitude, a two dimensional system used to simplify positional descriptors of our three dimensional globe. Also in use are three dimensional systems designed to pinpoint any position in space relative to a base or an origin. It is quite common to measure the location of a position from the base as movements or displacements along three lines of reference, let’s say for simplicity, an east-west line, a north-south line, and an up-down line. It is easier to refer to these three lines as the x, y, and z lines or preferably as the x, y, and z axes. Actually, the x and y axes are situated in a plane tangent to the Earth at the base point or origin. The z axis is mutually perpendicular to the other two axes at the origin.

In the past and still now for most, it is generally thought that mortal man’s existence is limited to or trapped in just three dimensions. Indeed it is difficult for man to visually perceive anything beyond three dimensions. Through mathematics however, man can conceive various models that extend well beyond three dimensions. Lyte Donner’s discovery adds a fourth line of reference for movement available to mankind. Typically in mathematics, the fourth line of reference is called the w-axis and certainly Lyte refers to this movement away from the ordinary three dimensions as movement relative to the w-axis and the space associated with such movement as w-space, which is of course is four dimensional space and Lyte now refers to movement in our normal 3-dimensional space as movement in xyz. Lyte would caution one from being too hasty and bringing in current biases and accepted theories about the fourth dimension to his discovered extension. The new direction of movement is the result of extending the rules of 3-dimensional Euclidean space to 4-dimensional space. It is Euclidean Four Space. As mentioned, Lyte perfected a device called the INTEGRAL to move into the new space. Lyte reasoned that a derivative, a concept from the annals of analytic mathematics, decreases the degree of a polynomial function. An antiderivative on the other hand increases the degree of a polynomial function. A fundamental theorem of analytical mathematics shows that an integral is the same as an antiderivative. An integral thus increases degree. Increasing the degree is akin to increasing dimension. That is why Lyte refers to his remarkable vehicle as the INTEGRAL. Lyte would further caution that it would be a mistake to perceive the INTEGRAL as a teleportation device. The INTEGRAL simply moves into extended space. Nothing is teleported anywhere. Nothing is disassembled and then reassembled as the INTEGRAL moves from point to point as would be the case in teleportation.

Because Lyte had strong concerns about the personal safety of those with knowledge of the INTEGRAL project, and among other issues, he delayed turning the project over to government authorities. The INTEGRAL project got underway well before the Donner children came onto the scene. Lyte thought the INTEGRAL project was so profound that it should be put to work for the benefit of all mankind and not just a few power hungry individuals seeking to control a population and not for a few greedy businessmen that would exploit the people and make windfall amounts of money. Lyte decided to entrust with his son Ray Donner, the delivery of the project to the authorities, that is when Ray became of age. Ray has since become of age and because of the INTEGRAL project, he has been a part of some new astonishing discoveries. At this point and in light of these new discoveries, Ray is unsure on how swiftly the project should be delivered to the authorities or whether or not the project should be delivered at all.

Ray Donner was introduced to the INTEGRAL project just two years prior by his dad Lyte Donner. Since then, Ray’s main interest in the project has been that of planetary exploration. Indeed, Ray has been able to travel to several planets and back and to set foot on many planets and their satellites in our own solar system and beyond. Among the Donners, this earned Ray the title of Planet Master.

Lyte and Jaseta had many adventures in the INTEGRAL before their children were born. Lyte pioneered INTEGRAL science. He and Jaseta shared many adventures in the INTEGRAL. Among those adventures were triumphs that included eradicating drug rings, dissolving street gangs, busting international terrorist organizations, and others.

Looking in on the Donners on a beautiful fall afternoon, finds Lyte over at Electric Air running the show there. Jaseta, Dawn, and Laser Joe are at home. Ray is away from home attending college at a state university about 200 miles from Dodecaville. Wave decided to attend the same university as Ray and is also away from home. Wave is living in the dormitories on campus but Ray is living in off campus housing for the first time. There are five other male students living at Ray’s off campus address each having a separate room as does Ray. The six male students in the house share a laundry area, a bathroom and shower area, a large study room, and a kitchen area. Ray’s friend Billy Bud is also living in off campus housing for the first time. Billy Bud’s off campus residence is set up similar to Ray’s and the house is about two blocks down the street from Ray’s.

It was about 8 PM Saturday evening when Wave called Ray over to her dorm. They met in a first floor reception area. Some of Wave’s new friends wanted to meet Ray and she agreed to set up the encounter. When Ray arrived, the first ten minutes or so passed with general conversation, but it later turned out that Ray would help a couple of Wave’s friends clear up some of the finer points of a mechanics lesson in physics. It was about 9:50 when they got done with the lesson.

Ray was headed back to his residence but decided to stop by and visit Billy Bud. Ray entered Billy Bud’s residence through a large study area. There he was told by one of the residents that Billy Bud was in his room asleep. He said that Billy Bud mentioned he would come down at 10:30 to prepare his dinner then return to his room to study all night. Ray decided to wait so he went into the kitchen area to sit until Billy Bud came down. Ray thought to himself, This kitchen floor is a mess. It could stand a mopping and a good cleaning. It seems to be showing its traffic from the day and probably from the entire week. Two residents of the house were also in the kitchen at that time. Ray had seen both on campus in previous terms but did not know either of their names.

Ray observed one resident as he lit an eye of the stove. The stove was a gas range that appeared to have a bit of age on it. The resident used a match to light the stove. He started to heat up his dish. Once he finished heating the dish, he turned the stove off, emptied the dish onto a clean plate, ate the dish, and then proceeded to wash the utensil that he used to heat the dish. The utensil appeared to be an old two-quart saucepan. Ray observed that the saucepan had a loose handle on it that apparently had been worn loose by a lot of usage. The handle allowed the saucepan to swivel around freely and to rotate adjusting to its center of gravity.

After the resident finished cleaning the saucepan, he said to Ray, Watch this! I am going to make that eye on the stove light by magic. The resident said, Hocus Pocus!! Abbra Kadabra!!, all the same time abruptly waving his hand at the stove, and flames came forth from the eye seemingly by magic. Ray was caught off guard. He was trying to logically figure how the trick was performed. The other resident said,

"He just waves his hands in the air,

And flames shoot out like a bright flare.

He most surely placed that confused look on your face

With sleight of hand he certainly does amaze

Now, I’m asking you my friend, not to be a puzzled spectator,

Because you have just met Mike, the house prestidigitator."

Just then, Billy Bud appeared in the kitchen. He greeted Ray and introduced Ray to the two other residents that were in the kitchen. Billy Bud asked Ray referring to one of the residents, He didn’t get you on his stove trick, did he? Ray said, Yeah he did. I’m trying to figure that out. It seemed like a good trick. Billy Bud said, Mike is known as the Magician around here in the house. He sometimes plays tricks on us. This stove is old. The pilot light stays lit but you still have to use a match to start the stove unless you fan the eye. I guess fanning the eye brings the pilot light flame closer to the eye and then it lights. To a newcomer, Mike turns the eye on first but this is usually unseen or unnoticed, but if you listen carefully, you can hear the gas seeping. Then he gets your attention saying to watch him perform magic. He says Hocus Pocus or some other words like that, waves his hands at the eye thereby fanning the eye, and then the eye lights. It appears to the newcomer that the eye lights magically. Mike played a trick on me my first day in this house. He got me pretty good. I was standing in the hallway near his room when he called me in. He said watch this! He waved his hands at his television and the television came on. He couldn’t have used a remote. The remote was on the other side of the room. I didn’t know it at the time but I later found out that he had just turned his TV on seconds before I came into the room. It was on mute so I couldn’t hear the sound. He knows his TV well and he knew it takes about 10 seconds to warm up, well at least for the picture to appear. It was a pretty good trick.

Billy Bud continued with, Mike earned his name The Magician because in the first week of school this term, he got locked out of his second story room. By the time the landlord got here with the key to let him in, he was already in. The landlord wanted to know how he got in but Mike would not tell him. After about five minutes of grilling and quizzing by the landlord, Mike finally said he would tell him. He told the landlord that when he was young, he became a magician. The landlord got ticked off and left. Everybody could hear his footsteps stomping the floor as he was leaving. Actually, Mike scaled a tree near his opened window and entered the room that way.

Billy Bud then turned to the second resident and said, I see that you have been entertained by Ed’s rhythmic expressions. Ed is known as The Poet in the house. On a given day, he sets much of his communication to verse. Ray said, Your house seems to be lively with a great deal of personality. Our house is considerably duller than this.

Four people were now in the kitchen area and general conversation ensued. While contributing to the conversation here and there, Billy Bud got out a can of spaghetti and meatballs. It was a well known brand of spaghetti and meatballs. Billy Bud said, I have been saving this can all day just for tonight. My loans have not disbursed yet. That is going to take another week but I am expecting money in the mail from home Monday. Billy Bud got out the saucepan and a clean plate. He placed the saucepan on one eye of the stove, and fanned the stove with the dinner plate. The stove lit. Billy Bud placed the plate on the table, opened his lone can of spaghetti and meatballs, and emptied it into the sauce pan. Billy Bud seemed to be taking particular care preparing his food that evening. Certainly, after a minute or two, the food was warm enough to eat, but Billy Bud lowered the flame down to a simmer and kept working with the food, all the time stirring it, adding margarine, adding pepper, adding water, adding other seasonings, and he kept stirring it round and round giving it that extra special touch. Billy Bud pampered his food on the stove for near a half hour. According to Billy Bud, those steps were necessary so he could access the deep savory flavor of the food. Finally, he thought it was ready. His plate was on the table. Billy Bud turned the eye out, reached for the saucepan so he could transfer the contents to his plate, but the sauce pan after clearing the stove, swiveled 180 degrees naturally seeking its center of gravity, and deposited its entire contents right onto the dirty floor. The food went, Sa Splatt!! as it hit the floor. There was complete silence. Nobody said a word. After about 15 seconds, Billy Bud broke the silence saying just one thing in a funny disgusted tone, Shucks! Billy Bud scraped his food from the floor and threw it over into the trash. He wiped the floor off a bit then left the kitchen area. Mike said, I guess he is going to his room and study all night for his exam on Monday. You know he likes to sleep a lot during the day and then stay up studying all night. I think that was all the food he had. He may have been down to his last can.

About five more minutes passed. Ed decided to go upstairs to check on Billy Bud.

Ed returned to the kitchen and reported that Billy Bud had turned the light out in his room and had gone back to bed. With that information, Ray left the premises and headed to his residence. Ray called Billy Bud the next day to check on him and to see if he needed anything. Billy Bud said that he was OK and that he did not need anything.

It was late Monday afternoon. Ray was on his way to Wave’s dormitory when he ran into Billy Bud on the street. Ray said, Sorry you lost your dinner Saturday. I hope Sunday was better. Billy Bud said, "A little bit better. Sunday was
