A Fit Expression of Life and Health - Dr. David Leader

    18:13

    CHAPTER 1

Understanding the Root Cause of Disease- A New Paradigm

My name is Dr. David Leader. Since I was a young boy, the human body and health have intrigued me. From the age of 18, I have been involved in the healthcare profession. Initially, I was trained in the U.S. Air Force as a Field Medic, Respiratory Therapist and Cardiovascular Technician; working with ventilator patients, lung function testing, emergency room procedures, performing stress tests, cardiac catheterizations and ultrasound tests on the heart. After my time in the military, I continued to work in these same fields in the private sector, while finishing my undergraduate studies with the intention of matriculating into medical school. To my surprise, after eight long years working in critical care environments, I realized that medicine, while quite good at interceding for folks who were in life threatening situations or suffered with physical defects and traumas, had no good answers for helping people who suffered with chronic, degenerative diseases. It was at this point that I realized I needed to look outside the medical paradigm (or way of thinking) and study a more natural approach in order to find the answers for which I was looking.

After earning my doctoral degree in Chiropractic and studying to become a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, I worked in private practice and continued studying research and scientific findings concerning plant extracts, diets, exercise, toxicity, vitamins and minerals. Since then, I have been teaching Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology and Chemistry at the college level while furthering my understanding of the origins of disease and natural means of restoring health.

My first book, The Alternative Medicine Cabinet, was written to introduce these natural healing techniques utilized by many natural health practitioners and researchers whose approaches differ from the mainstream, allopathic (medical) paradigm. In it, a fundamental understanding of diet, exercise, plant extracts and natural health products was outlined. The Alternative Medicine Cabinet presents options to the individual who is searching for answers to everyday health concerns without needing to rely on modern medical approaches; options beyond what your medical doctor, the mainstream media or big pharmaceutical companies tell you are the only answers.

A Fit Expression of Life & Health is the companion teaching to The Alternative Medicine Cabinet.

As profoundly successful as natural vitamins, minerals, plant extracts and nutritional products were and continue to be for restoring health from many conditions, I found that there remained a large chasm between what these natural modalities offered and the success that eluded me in treating the far more serious illnesses, such as cancer, brain injuries and autoimmune disorders like Lupus, M.S. and Rheumatoid arthritis.

These failures fueled my search for greater understanding outside the classical medical mindset or even that of natural medicine.

Through studying the history of how cultures from around the globe approached illness, I found that there was a common thread that linked these many disparate peoples’ attitudes toward sickness and disease. The similarity that many of them shared was the understanding that much of disease is the consequence of the life experiences that are encountered by the sick individual.

In other words, the traumas, emotional wounds and conflicts that we all encounter throughout the arc of our lives open the door to a multitude of emotional and subsequent physical manifestations of disease. From the shock of the untimely death of a loved one to the loss of a dream; from the frustrations of everyday living to self-hatred, these are what I found to be the true underlying roots of most disease.

As I dug deeper and deeper into trying to find more concrete proof, it became apparent that this was not a new idea. In fact it had not only been believed by many cultures, but even quantified (or proven scientifically) by some western researchers. From the early works of Claude Bernard to the more contemporary, Hans Selye, Ryke Hamer and others, the concept that the stress and strains of daily living could overwhelm the body’s ability to maintain balance and health has been, at least generally, accepted by modern medicine to be true.

How often do you hear that stress is to blame for some sickness or disease? But stress is a nebulous, nonspecific answer that doesn’t offer any helpful aid to the person suffering with a disease.

Stress is to blame, and A Fit Expression of Life & Health will be specific in defining which stress causes which disease and how to reverse its effects, among other techniques.

In my years of putting these theories to the test, I have witnessed some truly remarkable healings. After years of testimonials and reproducible results, I am thoroughly convinced that this model is a true and viable means of approaching most diseases; both physical and emotional.

I am not saying that every disease is due to the conflicts and traumas that you may encounter, but I am saying with confidence, that the vast majority of all disease is from these encounters.

Let’s take a look at cancer as an example. In the study of cancer, it is generally understood that the development of cancer requires both an initiator and a promoter. An initiator is the agent that causes alterations in the DNA, or genetic blueprint, of the cell. A promoter then supports and nurtures the growth of that cancerous growth. Radiation is a good example of an initiator, whether from a nuclear reactor or from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, radiation definitely can cause DNA mutation and therefore, cancer. That said, beyond radiation toxicity, I do not believe that most cancers are initiated or caused by physical (chemical) agents. I believe that the role that most chemical agents, such as pesticides, solvents and other toxins play is as a promoter. That is, these toxins promote the growth of cancerous growth after the cancer has already been born. This theory is supported by a wealth of research showing the link between many synthetic chemicals’ abilities to have this very effect; the growth of an existing cancer.

Factors such as poor diet, sleep, lack of exercise, nutritional deficiencies and toxicity will promote rapid expansion and worsening of the disease. Proper diet and sleep, good nutritional support, adequate exercise, the use of plant extracts, vitamins, nutritional products and other natural modalities will be beneficial in limiting the progression of the disease and will support rapid healing once the conflict or trauma has been resolved. I do not believe disease that is caused by shocks and traumas can be cured by natural or medical implementations alone. I believe that often times we resolve these traumas in our minds as a normal part of our everyday process of adapting and overcoming; not ever really understanding or recognizing what is taking place.

The overall health of our body before, during and after the conflict or trauma can and, often times, does dictate how or if we are able to overcome and heal from the sickness. So, therefore, prevention and living a healthy lifestyle does have a large impact in determining outcomes.

I also put forth, in support of the idea that virtually all cancer and disease stems from the conflicts and traumas of life, the fact that in the case of many practitioners who approach disease in this manner, every type of cancer and illness has shown itself vulnerable to being cured by this technique.

So the question is, If this theory is correct; that disease can be caused by conflicts, emotional wounds and traumas, how does simply knowing that help you get healed?

The answer is, then, In order to heal the physical manifestation of the trauma, you must somehow resolve the stress that the trauma initiated.

To resolve a conflict, emotional wound or trauma, you
